“Beautiful, perfect place to stay in Oak Park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2008

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Harvey House. I travel frequently for work in the US and abroad and Harvey House is one of the most delightful and comfortable B&B Inns I have ever stayed in. Beth tries to meet your every need in a gentle, unpretentious, and unintrusive way. The location is great and the house has lots of great places to work or read. The breakfasts are delicious and there are always treats available for off times. I'll definitely come back and I recommend Harvey house most highly.

“Very nice, watch the toilet paper level”

We enjoyed our 3 night stay in the Chalet Suite at the Harvey House.

Pros:
- Beautiful house
- Clean, spacious rooms (at least the Chalet Suite)
- Secure
- Close to the El train (if you are a really light sleeper, the train may keep you up).
- Flexible breakfast times. So many give a 1 hour window for breakfast, which isn't fun when in a different time zone. Harvey House is very flexible.
- The breakfasts are good, some great (fluffy oven pancakes).
- Soundproof. Except for a little noise when people were in the hall, we never heard any of the other guests.
- Beth is friendly and down-to-earth.

Cons:
- NO SPARE TOILET PAPER in the room. First stop as always after a long trip was the bathroom, there was almost no toilet paper on the roll. Not a big deal, grab the tissues - there were no tissues. Looked all around, no spare toilet paper either!! It should go without saying that a spare roll of toilet paper should always be available in the guest rooms. Especially when there are no tissues!! On our last day, a box of tissues mysteriously appeared, but never did extra toilet paper.
- (Minor con) In this price range, the afternoon brownies should be homemade, not from a box.

“Beautiful Amenties/Work on the finising touches..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2008

The Harvey House is absolutely beautiful! It's wonderfully and appropriately appointed rooms were a joy. Our party stayed in the Garden Suite and the Jimmy Stewart Room. Both were incredibly comfortable and relaxing. Host, Beth Harvey, is very sweet and tried her best to accomodate our every need. One of our party was a vegan and although she admitted she needs to diversify her breakfasts for different diets, she did try her best and we were full after dinner. It's extremely close to the train to hop to downtown for shopping or dinner, etc. There are also several options near the house in Oak Park. The common areas are very inviting and were just what we needed after a 6 hour drive. Beth also told us we had the run of the kitchen and to help ourselves to everything and anything. We opened a nice bottle of white wine and just relaxed while we decided where to eat. (We actually took a suggestion from Beth and went to a GREAT Italian place.) The few bad things we came across were: a few fixtures in the bathrooms were loose when used and the Garden Suite has no door to the bathroom area, just a screen, so zero privacy-it's just another corner in the room. Great tubs and wonderful chairs and fireplaces. The house is close to the train which is also a bad thing too. The house shakes occasionally when the train goes by. We definitely could sleep through it, it wasn't that bad, just is a little unsettling at first. Again, overall wonderful experience and would definitely go back.

  • Liked — Appointments and amenties in the rooms, luxurious!!
  • Disliked — Lack of options for vegan breakfasts

“Luxurious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2008

The Harvey House is one of the most luxurious B&Bs, yet is homey and relaxing. The decorating is sophisticated and artistic. Our room was small compared to others but had every appointment you could desire. The bed was the most comfortable we've ever slept on, on vacation OR at home. The common area was spacious and beautiful. A computer was available for our use at all times and a gourmet coffee machine was also available. It was also conveniently located near the El. If in the Chicago area again, I would definitely stay at the Harvey House.

  • Liked — Comfort in every detail.
  • Disliked — No complaints at all.

“Harvey House B&B is beyond excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2008

Even before our arrival, Beth Harvey, the innkeeper, treated us with courtesy and made us feel welcome. She even went to the trouble of purchasing a little bedside stepstool for the rather "tall" bed in the Jimmy Stewart room. (This turned out to be the best bed I've ever slept in - with super-luxurious sheets.)

The breakfast alone is worth the price. Beth and her assistant made sure each guest got something new and exciting each day. We were greeted with breakfast fare such as we've never had before in our lives - unique and scrumptious. (And, don't even get me started on the Caribbean Caramel & Banana culinary sauce that we found ourselves looking forward to each morning to pour over our new treats. What an endorphin rush!)

The accommodations far surpassed our expectations, including a jacuzzi tub and fireplace in our suite. Beth was very helpful in going on the internet and printing off specific directions for getting us where we wanted to go by taking the Chicago "L." This was made even more convenient by the fact that the "L" station was only one block away.

An added bonus is the fact that the B&B is in Oak Park where there are so many Frank Lloyd Wright houses. So, if you are a fan like I am, this adds extra sightseeing potential.

There is nothing - absolutely nothing - that I could find to criticize about the Harvey (and you know how easy it is to find things to criticize about most lodging places). Everything was beyond excellent, and well worth the price. I highly recommend it!

  • Liked — Everything was perfect in every way. Best, though, was breakfast and the bed!
  • Disliked — Although you never expect this at a B&B anyway, so it really doesn't count, but if I HAD to like something least, it would be that it doesn't have an elevator
