The Harvey House is one of the most luxurious B&Bs, yet is homey and relaxing. The decorating is sophisticated and artistic. Our room was small compared to others but had every appointment you could desire. The bed was the most comfortable we've ever slept on, on vacation OR at home. The common area was spacious and beautiful. A computer was available for our use at all times and a gourmet coffee machine was also available. It was also conveniently located near the El. If in the Chicago area again, I would definitely stay at the Harvey House.

“Harvey House B&B is beyond excellent”

Harvey House Bed and Breakfast

Jun 19, 2008

Even before our arrival, Beth Harvey, the innkeeper, treated us with courtesy and made us feel welcome. She even went to the trouble of purchasing a little bedside stepstool for the rather "tall" bed in the Jimmy Stewart room. (This turned out to be the best bed I've ever slept in - with super-luxurious sheets.)

The breakfast alone is worth the price. Beth and her assistant made sure each guest got something new and exciting each day. We were greeted with breakfast fare such as we've never had before in our lives - unique and scrumptious. (And, don't even get me started on the Caribbean Caramel & Banana culinary sauce that we found ourselves looking forward to each morning to pour over our new treats. What an endorphin rush!)

The accommodations far surpassed our expectations, including a jacuzzi tub and fireplace in our suite. Beth was very helpful in going on the internet and printing off specific directions for getting us where we wanted to go by taking the Chicago "L." This was made even more convenient by the fact that the "L" station was only one block away.

An added bonus is the fact that the B&B is in Oak Park where there are so many Frank Lloyd Wright houses. So, if you are a fan like I am, this adds extra sightseeing potential.

There is nothing - absolutely nothing - that I could find to criticize about the Harvey (and you know how easy it is to find things to criticize about most lodging places). Everything was beyond excellent, and well worth the price. I highly recommend it!

    • Liked — Everything was perfect in every way. Best, though, was breakfast and the bed!
    • Disliked — Although you never expect this at a B&B anyway, so it really doesn't count, but if I HAD to like something least, it would be that it doesn't have an elevator

The Harvey House B&B is luxurious, unique and relaxing. My mother, sister and I had a girls weekend and stayed in the Oak Park and Chalet suites on the top floor. It was so convenient to have the top floor as one large apartment by shutting off the hallway door and walking easily between the two suites.

The rooms were delightfully decorated. The Chalet Suite is adorable. The nautical theme is reflected in every detail. The Oak Park Suite has a very nice kitchenette with granite countertops and everything. Plus, the leather sofas are incredibly comfortable.

The entire B&B was historic yet updated with all the luxurious modern updates you'd hope for in a quality bed and breakfast. And, the breakfast was incredible. One morning we had french toast with strawberries and cream, yogurt parfais, Canadian ham, raisin bread and an assortment of drinks. I've been to my share of B&Bs, but this breakfast was absolutely the best. Plus, the staff is very friendly and helpful, but they also know how to give you your space. The owner, Beth, even answered a call from my mom at 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday for more cream for her coffee. Beth came up at once and delivered it herself! Then she had a pleasant conversation with my mom.

The only downside, if there's even one, is that the home is smaller than it appeared on the website, the dining area and back porch in particular. But, the home is so well appointed that it hardly made a difference.

My husband and I are heading back next month--it's that good!

In a world where the abuse of superlatives has become commonplace it is refreshing to report that there are still places which promise the best stay of your life and actually deliver on it. Harvey house promises a sumptuous experience, a warm welcome, memorable breakfasts and delightful surroundings. In reality, the service which Beth and Girle provide to their guests is all this and more.
The room was magnificent, large, warm, welcoming, beautifully decorated and furnished. With wonderful bedlinen and a comfortable King sized bed, no possible creature comfort had been overlooked. I have been travelling in the USA from Europe for over 15 years now and this was unquestionable the most memorable experience I have had. It is long past the time I gave up staying in vastly overpriced, anonymous corporate chain hotels but mose Inns or B+B's do not aspire to this level of comfort and welcome.
Lastly I must thank Beth, who showed such kindness to my wife, who fell ill during our stay. She found a clinic, drove us to the doctor and took a kind but respectful interest in my wife's wellbeing. We did not expect to encounter such kindness and humanity, particularly in the early morning when breakfasts were being prepared for other guests. I should stress that I have never previously written a review, taking the view that one pays for the service and the debt is satisfied. neither do I plan to make a regular habit of this. However, exceptional service and beautiful surroundings, coupled with extraordinary personal kindness does deserve to be acknowledged and if this review encourages others to stay at Harvey House, it will add to the sum of human happiness for guests and for hostess.

“There are not enough stars on the scale!!!!!!!”

Harvey House Bed and Breakfast

I have to add my rave to the many on this site and in the guestbook at Harvey House. Here are all the things I found perfect about the Harvey House experience, not just the setting and amenities:

The tiniest details are considered for my comfort and delight
The paint colors!
The extreme cleanliness
The furnishing and truly elegant, REAL DEAL high-end decor (not a middling, mass market attempt at elegance)
Gourmet breakfast - and the food is truly fantastic!
Complimentary wine and snacks in the evenings
Great bathrooms
In-room fireplaces
The low-key homey atmosphere
The unending amenities
The warmth and charm of the Oak Park Neighborhood, A REAL and delightful "home town" neighborhood 20 minutes from downtown Chicago!!

But none of this would matter if I weren't made to feel better than royalty. I am welcomed as a dear friend. I am made to truly feel at home. You can't put a price on the genuine warmth and caring that exude from this exceptional innkeeper, Beth Harvey. You get all this, and there's more! Beth is also a very professional and conscientious businesswoman, someone who truly understands and can cater to business needs as well as family and special occasion needs (I've had a business meeting there, too). Its really amazing and great.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — The innkeeper is a gem. The best in the business. Everything else great flows from her perfectionism.
    • Disliked — Sometimes a bit far from downtown. 25 minutes by train or car if traffic's moving well.
