I LOVED the location and the website pictures make you want to stay here. The employees we came in contact with were very nice. But, once you get past the beautiful lobby area, this place falls flat. Every floor seemed to smell and our room was even worse! The walls were stained yellow and the vent looked like it hadn't been cleaned in atleast a year. We were booked in a Period suite where the only thing that might have been an antique is the headboard. On one side of the suite was one of the dangerous step up bathrooms...with only a toilet. You have to go to the other side of the suite to get to the shower which was extremely dimly lit, and again, a step up into it. The couch was crammed into a little nook next to the fridge and was very shabby looking. For the money they charged, it's just not worth it.

You're hoping: Great Gatsby. You get: The Jungle. Write Inn is a bit run down at the heels (if I squint while looking at the pix on their website, my room looked a bit similar). Staff was young and often friendly. Breakfast was quaint with a Euro feel. Biggest problem was parking. 1. Public garage 300 yds away -- a nice jaunt in pleasant weather, in the rain not so much. 2. Guest must remember to validate card every morning. 3. Guest must remember not to back into space. 4. Guest must remember to sign into hotel log book every night. I returned after midnight of a very long and stressfull day and forgot to sign in. My reward was a $30 dollar citation on my window the next morning. Upon checkout, I waited 1.5 hours to see a manager who never showed. When I asked the youngster at the desk why they didn't just automatically submit a log each day for their guests who had cars, the response was, "We would have to do that for everyone!" I will not be returning.

This is a charming hotel in a wonderful old residential neighborhood with a lot of Frank Lloyd Wright houses nearby, as well as Wright's Unity Temple.
It's reasonably priced and conveniently located approximately 3 blocks from the el, which takes you into downtown Chicago in about 15 minutes.
It is also in a neighborhood with interesting shops and restaurants.
If you like the charm and graciousness of an older hotel, this is the place to be. It reminded me of hotels we stayed in in some European cities.

Excellent location, just 3-5 min walk to subway; and then 15-20 mins into the heart of Chicago. After reading some reviews I was prepared for the less than friendly front desk staff. They do their job ok, answer questions, and even gave me some change for the subway, but not with a smile.

My room was a queen ensuite and came with a fridge and microwave. Everything was clean and looked well maintained, the tv signal was a bit rubbish at times. Housekeeping were lovely and, even with a slight language barrier, made an effort to be friendly and helpful.

There is an onsite resturant which is a little pricey, you're obviously paying for the convienience, but the food is of a good quality.

In a nutshell, if you don't mind slightly dodgy customer service this place is good value for the location - tho do shop around on different websites. I managed to save myself $30 a night by going through expedia.

Wanted to check out the Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the area and this couldn't have been more convenient. Nice enough room with kitchenette. Maid service was very good (never interrupted us). Bathrooms need upgrading as counter was tile and wood with peeling paint and missing grout. Was willing to overlook, as they gave out lovely English soaps and shampoos! Hemingway's restaurant, on the first floor, has nice meals with some kind of jazz brunch on Sunday. Better prices a block away in town. Try thehotel's antique elevator, the oldest working elevator in the area. It's a hoot to use but opening the doors isnot for the weak! If any managers are reading this, you really need to clean/ replace that carpet that goes from the lobby to the modern elevator; it's black, nasty and filthy and undercuts the lovely impression from the jazz restaurant. Also, this is directly across the street from a museum about Ernest Hemingway.
