I live literally two blocks from the Marion Street Cheese Market, so it's my go-to place for cheeses (and often for wines, as well). I often come here for a drink before or after dinner as well.
Excellent cheese market: This is by far the best place in Oak Park (if not in Chicago!) to buy both domestic and foreign cheeses. They have an excellent selection with well-labelled cheeses (labels are informative and easy to understand, they also describe the cheeses accurately). Service is great: before you make your choice, you can have a taste of as many cheeses you want. Also, they have a smaller selection of small pieces of left-over cheeses that are perfect for a mid-day snack or, if you buy a few of those, to bring to a picnic, or to take home to try a variety of cheeses without committing to a larger chunk. They also sell fantastic baguettes -- crusty on the outside, soft and porous on the inside. The store has a very good wine selection as well -- most wines are above $10 but there a few within the $8-10 range that are good, solid wines. The staff is helpful and eager to help with food and wine pairings.
A so-so restaurant: The best food at the restaurant are the cheese and meat platters, which are spectacular. You can't go wrong when ordering any of these. Their cooked food is hit or miss. I've been there for dinner and for brunch on many occasions and every time I was unimpressed if I ordered anything but the cheese and meat platters. Their drinks and wines selection is more than decent, and they usually have good recommendations for pairings.
