“Very good service and good food !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2012 via mobile

We visited on Jan 14 2012.
The service eas great. We had a great helpful and patient waiter.
We started with Kingfisher beer - a nice mild lager, followed by an assortment of appetizers. Main course is a selection of lamb chicken fish on a hot platter, goat curry, fish tiki masala. Although the mai. Portions look small they are very filling.
The hot platter was a bit over cooked and dry.We also had a mango an pineapple lassi very good a bit too sweet and not cold enough.

“Good Hot Curry with excellant service and reasonable price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2011

This review is written from the viewpoint of a Brit who (like most other Brits) MUST have a decent curry at least once a week. Curry is the most popular eat-out in Britain and one of the greatest gifts from the days of the British Empire.
The problem that besets most Brits abroad (except in Asia!) is where to get a weekly curry fix. The USA is up to its waist in Pizzas, Mexican, Chinese and Germanic restaurants, whilst curry houses are relatively scarcer in number (the downside of not owning India in the past!).
Having sampled a few US Indian restaurants in Chicago in the past I've found the offering fairly bland and designed for US tastebuds. For example in Wilmslow Road, Manchester UK, there was a Curry House that offered a dish called "Suicide" which was so hot you got a certificate on completion. You're unlikely to find that in the US and any pretence at a decent Madras or Vindaloo (very hot and very very hot) being served up, prior to visiting the Himalayan Restaurant, left me wanting hotter. (If you want Hot in the US you go Mexican). I suspect Health and Safety Legislation is to blame. Maybe the proprietors are frightened of being sued for physical effects (hot sweats, nose runs and the ultimate date with the washroom).
Anyhow it was at the Himalayan I found 95% of what I was looking for. It did take a fair amount of negotiation between me and the staff (and the kitchen) to convince them I wanted Hot Hot and would willingly pay for the result and not sue. When it came it was more Madras, not quite Vindaloo in heat levels, but hell in Chicago this is better than it normally gets.
The place is well managed, the service is excellant, and my American companions who wanted Mild were equally satisfied and enjoyed the meal (and are probably still in wonderment at the strange British need for a hot curry fix).
So every October when I'm in Chicago you'll find me once a week at the Himalayan in Niles trying to negotiate that extra 5% of Hot which will deliver the perfect Curry Fix. India has a lot to answer for!
