Boraan’s Restaurant

Tucked away in a tiny strip mall in Naperville is a unique restaurant. It is clean, bright, friendly and comfortable. You have two menus to pick from – one Thai and one Vietnamese. Two menus is an excellent way to highlight the unique strengths of each of these cuisines. Boraan’s offers a variety of selections for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

Boraan’s offers some of the best Vietnamese Pho soup we’ve had in Chicagoland. It’s the equal of any we’ve had in Washington or Boston.

The Pho at Boraan’s is elegant, aromatic and complex. It’s not the greasy beef broth you sometimes find. Here the owner makes it himself, rather than leaving it to his chef and he takes the 4 to 6 hours you need to do it right.

The quality and care put into the food does not stop there. A dish that is easy to make greasy and muddled is Pad Thai. It’s a classic stir fried noodle dish that demands proper technique. At Boraan’s, their Pad Thai was light, subtle, aromatic and finely seasoned.

Frying is an area that always tests the quality of the chef. Here it was so well done, that the shrimp & vegetable tempura was crisp while being so greaseless that it barely left any mark on a napkin.

The Khao Pad Curry was another feast for the senses. It is a Malay style fried rice with yellow curry powder, sweet onion, snow-peas, carrots, bell pepper, pineapple, raisins and fried shallots.

Deserts are well represented and include Moh Kaeng, a sweet warm taro custard from Thailand.

They have a beer and wine license, although my favorite remains the various varieties of Thai or Vietnamese iced coffees – near espresso coffee over ice with a thin layer of condensed milk floating on the top.

We live in Naperville so we go there often. But if you're traveling in Western Chicagoland, Boraan’s is definitely worth a special trip.
