I don't know if this place has any Americanized dishes like sweet and sour or the like, because we always order the namesake mapo tofu, the celebrated spicy beef noodle soup or another atypical (for America) dish. The flavors are unlike anything I've eaten before, heavy with oils, spices that linger, pickled vegetables and thick noodles. This is food worthy of Chinatown.
The waitresses are indeed no-nonsense and seem wary of white folks (like myself) ordering spicy food, knowing that it could be sent back to the kitchen. I'm a friend of the pepper so nothing has been intolerably spicy, but it has come close!
We brought a Taiwanese friend along and he was amazed, ordering more food to bring home with him to eat later.
Also, we used to enjoy Joy Yee's place nearby but their food quality has suffered, so we are glad to have a replacement.
