“Nothing special”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

Too "Mattoonish". All the people that have lived in Mattoon forever and who really think they are important go there. Their food lacks flavor, seasoning, and taste. Much better choices in town. Even when they aren't busy, the hostesses are always rude and ask if you have reservation and are so shocked that you didn't call to make one.

“Many Martinis, Average Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

I've eaten at the Alamo numerous times, when staying in/near the Mattoon area. It never seems to change.

The food is very Midwestern average, with a strong preponderance of steak dishes. I've also had chicken and salmon there. All are fine; none are special.

There are many Martini flavors to choose from. I've had several and they were quite tasty in a flavored Martini kind of way. The martinis are small, which I find preferable. I don't like a drink in a glass the size of my head!

Service is average to good. Everything about this place seems to be consistent, even to the music playing.

“Tried it yet again.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Steak house so I ordered a rib eye the first time we stayed. Thin cut and not even close to medium rare. Next time we were there I ordered the prime rib. Medium well this time and noticeably nuked. We'll probably try somewhere else next time through Mattoon.

“Unexpected surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

We had reservations after our daughter's graduation from EIU. There was a party of six, all with different tastes and food desires. Upon entering, I thought it might be another "Texas"-style place. But, happily, it was a comfortable atmosphere with an excellent menu ranging from chicken-fingers to salmon to prime rib to anything you might desire. Everyone ordered something different, as expected, and everyone said their entree was delicious. It was especially nice of our server, Mason, to bring out the Graduation cake we brought to surprise our daughter. (Some restaurants wouldn't allow you to bring in desserts - another BIG plus to the Alamo!!)

Although we may not visit the EIU area again for a while, if we are in that area we will make time to eat at Alamo!
