“Pricy…particularly on Holidays…and you have to ask for “free” sides”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

We have been coming here for decades. This review is about our two latest visits: one the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day & one on St. Patrick’s Day the following Monday. I’ve given a 4 for the former & a 2 for the latter. On Saturday we stuck to the tried and true “Hackney burger” on dark bread (any other way just does not work here) and a small onion loaf. One hamburger came with fries & the other with homemade potato chips. The onion loaf, burgers and the chips were great (but a tad pricy). The fries tasted made from frozen and were not up to the quality they used to be…. I’d strongly suggest the chips option. Normally the burgers come with a pickle…but ours did not…I guess you have to ask if you want one (other tables had pickles). Service was fine. On Monday we tried the corned beef and cabbage, which also had been available on Saturday for $12.95…. however it was now $14.95! I asked if it was a larger portion; I was told no, it was because they had entertainment. Supposedly this was live entertainment but they were supposed to have that Saturday too! In any case, there was no live entertainment at the times we were there on both days. The meat was of good quality but not much of it (no more the 2- 3 oz.) It was a thin luncheon cut placed on top of a large serving of cabbage to make it look like more; carrots & boiled potatoes rounded out the plate. Most people had dark bread served with this meal, but again I guess you have to ask for it… our waiter did not even mention it. The split pea & potato soups (@3.95/cup for each ) were excellent. So, summing it up, ask if you want the pickles or bread that are supposed to come with the meal, never go here on a holiday, do not eat hamburger on anything but dark bread, ask for chips instead of fries, always order the onion loaf and soups but do not expect much meat with corned beef…. and expect to pay a bit more than other similar places.

“Food Still Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

The inside needs an update. Food is still great. Waiters still great. The onion rings are really good but, not to take home (they don't recover from when they first came out). Nice fireplace and plenty of free parking.

“Hasn't changed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2014

I'll keep this brief. The place hasn't changed in years. The burgers are still first rate, the onion loaf is still delicious, the cocktails well crafted, the decor hasn't changed.

Maybe it's time for some new tables and chairs. I'm mostly eating memories when I'm there but I wonder what people think who didn't eat there forty years ago.

If you are in a nostalgic mood for wood paneling and old school charm do stop in.

“Great onions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2014

Enjoy the hamburgers, which are always good, The onion loaves are great, but if you take them home, beware they do not reheat well.

“Not the "Ol' Standby"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2014

We've been eating at Hackney's for decades and the burgers have always been consistently good, but not tonight. I described them as "lacking LOVE". It tasted dry and processed, not the usual juicy, hand formed, high quality beef blend we've come to expect. Service was OK, but when we ordered a burger to go, it was priced higher than the menu price. We asked the server why and his response was that it was "ordered to go", that's store policy. The experience wasn't even worth consulting a manager because we don't plan to return. Hackney's brags that they've been voted "Best Burgers in the North Shore", but they certainly don't get my vote.
