“Lovely Island, friendly staff, forget the snorkelling!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

Our stay was the fourth time of visiting the Maldives. The island is undoubtedly lovely as you would expect. The room ( with small pool) was excellent with some nice touches - loved the outdoor bathroom and shower. The staff were lovely - friendly and approachable. The bar areas have great day beds etc and lots of nice spaces to relax. Food was fine. The place was nowhere near full occupancy when we visited - very quiet - a bit too quite and the place seemed to lack a bit of atmosphere.

The one disappointment for us was the snorkelling. One of the reasons we vist the Maldives again and again is for the snorkelling and diving. We are used to the sea being like a mini aquarium with great coral and marine life directly off the beach and good diving. The island is surrounded mainly by sandy lagoons with little or no fish and no coral of any note. The majority of coral that may have been off the shore has been removed and repositioned around the windows of the underwater nightclub a short distance from the shore. If travelling with children you won't be able to visit the nightclub with them to show then the marine life unless you pay to go on one of the organised boat rides offered to guests for a brief visits. A nice touch would have been to offer this as a complimentary trip - after all it is one of the island's facilities?

Trips are organised to snorkelling sites by the Dive School but one of the things we love is to just take off when we want to from the shore not go to the expense or inconvenience of a timed activity that takes up half a day. Also, at the time of writing this, there were only morning dives available to qualified divers which all commenced at 8.30am - fine if you don't mind crack of dawn starts on holiday but not for us thanks. A leisurely afternoon dive is always a favourite but not an available choice unfortunately.

We had a relaxing holiday but came away a little disappointed with a general feeling that, whilst the island is pretty, with good facilities which you expect for the price of the holiday - it lacks a little something that we could not quite put our finger on. If you have never been to the Maldives before, this island will make an impression, but more seasoned Maldives travellers will know what we mean.

A new luxury addition to the Maldives.
We were there from Oct 24- Nov 1, 2012.
My 6th visit to Maldives.
First two nights in a beach villa, which was so new that many things did not work, so when we told our (takuru) Rasheed about the many things missing and not working, he told the managment and they up-graded us to a Deluxe pool water studio , which made up our holiday despite the rain which lasted from Oct 27- Oct 31, it was raining on and off during those days.

We did snorkel in the house-reef with the Niyama team by boat, the sea was choppy on Oct26 when we snorkeld so I could not see the reef well to comment, it was a struggle to snorkel in that weather, only some dolphins made it up for us when they passed so near and did few moves which made the snorkling trip worth the effort.

The Yoga Master is so good, Enriqu in water-sports took good care of my teen-age son, he trained him only when the weather was good, otherwise he sent him back and told him to wait for the weather to clear, I liked that he cared for my son's saftey.
My son was doing wind-surfing. He also did some kaying, and other water sports daily.

I spent most of my money in the spa, Awosme spa, Ear-Candling is a unique thing.

The privet pool in the water villa was the best as we used it in the intervals between the rain, It was a good size for a privet pool, jaccuzi was good also, Actually we only left the villa for breakfast and dinner as we were on HB, just being in the villa reading and swimming was enough for me,Also got a good selection of Music in the Music section of the TV-set which was so nice, with free movies and good TV channels. Internet was so slow as my daughter commented, it was much better in Six sences laamu , which we visted Two months before.

We had one dinner in Tribel, and another in the Edge, both were good, we get 30% discount as we were on HB.

Amandeep the resort manager was really caring and kept sure we had a fantastic holiday despite the rain, he spoke to us almost every morning at Breakfast, I liked his style, so polite.

I was in the Maldives same time last year, exactly 10 days later (early nov 2011) the rain was there for only 30min for the whole 8 nights.(Maldives got unpredictable weather) in my opinion.

In short, if you are after a luxury holiday this is the place for you, If you care about snorkling and diving, then there are many other cheaper resorts which can satisfy you more.

I stayed at Niyama for 5 nights from 25th -30oct 2012. In short: HEAVEN

I was on full board & stayed in the grand beach pavillion

1-Great Beach
2-super luxury rooms.
3-Fantastic mini bar options with free haagen dazs icecreams, Nespressio machone, a popcorn machine, crisps and snacks replenished daily.
4-Infinity pool
5- Immediate beach access

The management took every possible measure to rectify anything and make me happy. The island is super clean, the food is great, the diving center is operated by a fantastic team who will do anything to make you happy and enjoy their services

6-Luxury business centre with unlimited water, nespresso.

7-excellent room service available 24/7 and they never say no.

8-The deli is a great place to walk into for ice cream, sandwiches, cocktails, cakes & snacks to go open till 5:00pm

9-excellent snorkelling sites. & very nice dive sites for beginners

10- Its worth noting that the arrival lounge at Male international airport that is dedicated to Niyama is (SUPER LUXURY) with unlimited food, snacks, drinks, shower rooms and a arrival massage corner.

The island is romantic with maximum privacy. Thank you Niyama team for giving me the best romantic experience

Salim & Khawla

Room Tip: 1- Beach pavilions which are on Sunset location are the best in terms of privacy.

I stayed at niyama for one week. What a beautiful place, and beautiful people. I flew all the way from miami, a long trip that was worth every minute. Thank you to Brian the general manager, Amandeep the resort manager,Angie and Stacey two awesome girls that work in communications. Big thank you to Imran who was always there whenever we needed anything and took us everywhere in the golfcart without complaints, even tho we were always late. We stayed in #77 and it was the most beautiful 2br 2bath. There was a lot of rain which is common for October. Beautiful food at all 3 restaurants and a great spa and awesome underwater club. There is a game room and plenty of water activities including a trip to a private island. Thos was the best vacation I have ever had, and I have taken many trips. Don't hesitate to come to niyama if you want a luxury stay and beautiful memories.

The resort is a paradise. I stayed for 4 nights at a Deluxe Water Suite which is 200Sqm on top of the sea with a private pool and private jacuzzi and a big terrace on top of and overlooking nothing but the ocean. The design of the room is so fabulous that where ever you are you will see the ocean..you wake up and with a click of a button you open the curtains and see the ocean from the bed. you sit on the two chairs in the room and you see the ocean in front of you. You take a bath you see the ocean..you sit on the toilette you see the ocean...you take a shower you see the ocean..you get the idea...nothing in the design is left to chance... But you know what, that's where it ends!!
I'm someone who's used to the service of Four Seasons, St. Regis, Ritz Carlton..etc
You will end up paying more than those at this resort, but you'll get the service of a 3 stars hotel or even less!! The service is really a zero. cleaning the rooms is a zero...many other issues a zero...I had two issues during my stay and you can never speak with the manager because all the workers are teaming up together and will never let you reach higher authorities...until I really got mad and upon checkout the manager knew about my issue and offered a resort credit...it was a nice gesture but I was not after money...I'd rather pay extra and get the service I deserve during a vacation I chose to relax in...so dont expect you will go there and be spoiled by service..NO, NO, NO...but you will be spoiled by the beautiful nature around you and will make you forget big part of the major flaws in the hotel...
Another thing, the hotel although new, has major issues with things working/not working...example: nearly half of the private jaccuzis at the resort do not work..pool lights are burned...always something not working...you get the idea...it definitely spoils the 5-star experience..Also the restaurant selection is very weak and while you are on a private island in the middle of ocean, dont expect you will be having a lot of sea foods..there's hardly good sea foods at this hotel's restaurants.
Would I recommend the resort to others, its a "may be" for now but like many other reviews said in a year time things might improve and I'd say yes... Would I stay there again, NO! there are 100+ five stars resorts in the maldives that are fully operational and have excelled in the service department

Room Tip: Choose a Deluxe Water Studio...it has bigger terrace and a private jacuzzi (as in advance if its wor...

Niyama is a very special place. From the moment you are met at the airport and taken to the special Niyama lounge, the journey of luxury and Niyama quality begins. On arrival at this very comfortable lounge, it's so good after a long flight to sit back and enjoy the complimentary drinks and food and the refreshing ice towels (you will get used to seeing these ice towels before every meal, journey etc.over your time at Niyama).

Its a 50 minutes flight by seaplane to Niyama in the southern Dhaalu Atoll. We stopped off first at the sister resort, Huvafen Fushi to drop off some guests and then it is just 10 minutes further in the seaplane to Niyama.

The welcome is warm and friendly. They really look after you and we had some nice touches as it was our honeymoon. I love how they all seem to know our name everywhere you go, and every member of staff stops what they are doing to greet you each time they see you.

We had a beach pool villa. We got one facing the sunset which we were pleased about as the beach is much nicer on this side. We were villa 18, which has probably the widest stretch of sand on the island. The other side of the island is windier and although the water is clearer, is also much stronger in terms of current so not so relaxing. You end up spending more time in the pool though, as it is perfect and fresh water.

The room was stunning with great touches like the movie / sound system, huge mini bar choice, complimentary ice cream, pop corn and drinking water. There is an ipad to use, and also a DVD-CD player available upon request. The lack of mirror in the main room is annoying though as my wife told me that as a girl, it is not ideal trying to do your hair and make up without a mirror.

The bathroom is enormous and nothing beats having a refreshing outdoor shower after being snorkelling.

The Q service (telephone concierge) is really great and Amanda is always so helpful and kind on the phone.

The room service is amazing and our 'room boy', Rushdy was brilliant. Our thakuru (butler), Imran, was always on hand too if we needed him.

The restaurants are all very good. The buffet breakfast and dinner in Epicure is top class and literally has every food you can imagine, which when you are in the middle of the Indian Ocean is pretty amazing. Again the staff at Epicure are brilliant, we loved Arie and Nikila. Epicure dinners are themed each night with Maldivian night being a big highlight as they do something a bit special for that.

On Wednesday night, they do a beach barbeque. But it is a bit cheeky, as they charge you extra for this; even if you are on Half Board so we decided not to do it.

Tribal offers a very unique dining experience and our waiter, Dmitri is a real top chap.

Edge is the unique feature of Niyama as it aims to be a different type of resort for the Maldives. The complex consists of a bar with an open, exterior deck to be able to enjoy drinks in front of the sunset; the Edge restaurant whose interior oozes style and sophistication with a very innovative and original menu. However, the piece de resistance is Subsix. A nightclub submerged six metres beneath the surface and offering the chance to witness ocean life whilst you can dance, relax and enjoy a cocktail or two. It is a very exclusive place, especially as it involves a private boat transfer across to this floating complex, 500 m offshore. Be warned that if you are on Half Board, this is not included but it is worth every dollar.

There are other great facilities including an impressive water sports centre called Float, although they have started charging for snorkelling trips since September and Niyama in truth is far from being the best snorkellig / diving location in the Maldives. There is a 24 hour gym called Pump, a deli which serves tasty wraps and snacks for an inexpensive ($8 per wrap) and light lunch and there is also the Lime spa which we didn't bother with. The Fahrenheit bar is very trendy and is a lovely spot to enjoy the sunset before dinner. Prices for alcohol are generally the same across all the bars and restaurants here, with a beer or glass of wine setting you back around $8 and bottles of wine starting at about $50.

There is very little to fault this place. Yes it costs a lot but the quality, level of luxury and exceptional service justifies this expense.

As it is recently built, we noticed a few things that they probably need to sort out. It is not really possible to walk / run around the island yet. One end is still has remnants of being a building site and my wife cut herself on an old rusty nail that was sticking out of the sand at that end of the island. We also noticed a dangerous, sharp piece of metal sticking out of the beach near the over-water bungalows. We spotted it, but a kid running around might not and could seriously hurt themselves.

When we were there, occupancy was around 50% so only 90 guests but even when it is fully booked, there are still about 3 staff for every 1 guest.

As for the weather. We were there from 14th Sept 2012 for 1 week. We had 4 and a half days of glorious hot, sunny weather with very few clouds, and 2 and a half days of solid rain, wind and storms.

Niyama is trying to be something different for the Maldives and it is going to achieve great things. This is not the stereotypical cheesy, romantic, over the top place that some many resorts in Maldives seem to be. This place is stylish and luxurious, whilst still being discreet and understated. We loved it and if it continues its exceptional commitment to caring for their guests, then I think it will be a success!

Room Tip: Go for a west facing pool beach villa for the sunset and better beach. Bungalow 18 has a really nice...

Stayed in Niyama for 4 nights in October and loved it. It takes a while to reach by seaplane but once you are there it all seems worth it. The rooms are very modern, spacious and the bathroom is out of this world. Plenty of water activities although a bit pricey. Having two unique restaurants (Tribal and Edge) added to a sense of occasion in the evenings. We were lucky to be part of the official opening party of the underwater nightclub during our stay. Lovely clean beach and attentive staff. The mosquitoes were a bit of a menace but didn't spoil the overall experience. The management was always visible and interacting with guests so you know they aim to please. Highly recommended.
