“Exceptional resort, on a Beautiful Island.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2009

We have just come back from our two week honeymoon and had an absolute fantastic time despite having an uncharaterisicly wet 8days. I do not normally write reviews but this website was one of the reasons we choose this resort because everything was generally so positive. From the moment we got there the staff could not do enough for you, the island, surrounding reef and laggon are beautiful and provide ample entertainment even on the dullest of days while we were there. The sea tempreture can be likened to a warm bath and in places it is like swimming in your own private aquarium with every variety of fish you can possibly imagine.
Every where was immaculately clean and they even had staff constantly grooming the sand pathways and beaches to keep them free of fallen leaves and anything which may have been washed up. Out of the 14 days we had probably 6 sunny days which were stunning aand the last two days were virtually cloudless skies, very hot and were picture perfect and as close to paradise as you could imagine.
Even when it rained there was plenty to do as it still was warm, there was also the gym which we frequented on many occasions and this was very well equipped for a resort this size, the Spa is excellent, they even have a massive DVD selection to utilise should you wish, playing it on the excellent TV and surround sound system they have in each room.
The jacuzzi water villas are stunning and kept excepionally well and our room boy Mahmoodh Ali was fantastic decorating the bedroom with flowers on several occasions, Fiona loved it, the sunset and sunrise are beautiful whether observed from your balcony or the excellent bar.
The food in the restaurant was exceptional and is the best I have come across in any hotel we have stayed in by a long way, to say it is a buffet understates it by a long way, there is something for every taste, everything is fresh and extremley well prepared and my wastline is definitley larger for our holiday experience.
I have seen a few moans about the value of this place and I would say that if you go stay all inclusive this is definitely the best value and when we go back we will definitely do this again and all in all this is probably the best value holiday we have been on to date..
Finally if you are looking for a holiday in a beautifully romantic location, in an excellent 4 star (should be 5) hotel which is great value do not hesitate to go here, we spoke to many people while we were there who had been to the Maldives several times or had transferred to this one for the second week of there stay and they all said this was the best resort they had stayed in by a long way or was significantly better than the one they had been in, what better endorsement can you get! Enjoy Jamie and Fiona

We stayed at Veligandu for 2 weeks from 18th July to 1st August. To provide a little context my husband and I are early 30's and have previously visited The Maldives twice (Sun Island and Mirihi). I have to say that each trip has been wonderful in its own way. We have always researched the islands before we visit and we have never been disappointed. Sun Island was our first trip to the Maldives and as everyone says your first trip will always be amazing. I probably wouldn’t return there as we now prefer smaller more traditional islands like Mirihi and Veligandu. Anyway we have in the past flown with First Choice – excellent direct flight from Manchester, comfortable seats, good entertainment. This year as we only booked a week before we flew there were no First Choice seats available through Hayes and Jarvis so we ended up with an Emirates flight from Manchester via Dubai. I was initially quite excited about flying with Emirates, more space, better entertainment etc.. but to be honest the additional time at Dubai did make the journey just that little too long for us; having said that if this was my only option to get to the Maldives I would do it again! No problems with flight, slight delay leaving Manchester (and noted this had been a trend for some weeks with Emirates) which made me worry a little about getting connecting flight from Dubai to Male on time but in reality there was no problem we just didn’t have that long to look around Dubai airport. Didn’t see much of Dubai as it was night time when we flew out and a sandstorm on the way back – heat was immense though! Made Maldives feel positively cool 

Arrived in Male and greeted by staff wearing face masks (swine flu taken very seriously!). All passengers on the flight had to fill out a health questionnaire then wait in line to be given a green health card – basically if you are from Europe you will be given one of these and it states that you are from a swine flu infected location and should you show any signs of illness while on holiday you should give the green card to the Dr. This did add a little time on to the usual quick process of entering Male but understandable. On the flight back from Male some Italians were wearing face masks in the airport lounge and on the flight and eyeing Brits up with suspicion… anyway I digress. We had a wait of about one and a half hours for the seaplane so we just got a bottle of water and took in the view. Seaplane was about 15 mins to Veligandu and as usual we loved the views of the atolls from the air – never tire of taking photos of them (remember a fan and bottle of water to keep you cool as the sea plane is boiling before you take off)! The sea plane landed actually at Veligandu (during low tide it lands at a nearby island and you take a boat to Veligandu) which was a new experience. Greeted by Guest Relations manager (Corrinne) and taken to reception given a cool drink and towel and filled out standard forms. We were then taken in groups to our accommodation. Having stayed at Mirihi for our honeymoon last year Veligandu does lack the very personal feel that Mirihi has but the price difference reflects this. We stayed in Water Villa 127 (I had emailed ahead to ask for a WV on the sunset side). I loved this location, we had uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean – simply stunning! The sun set right ahead of us and we watched every sunset from our deck. The WV are 123, 124, 127 and 128 on sun set side and 121, 122, 125, 126, 129 and 130 on sun rise (strange numbering so don’t just assume even numbers on one side and odd on the other). Room was lovely, thatched – unlike some of the JWVs, spacious bathroom with rain shower and spa bath, two sinks and toilet. Bedroom was also a good size with king size bed, two chairs and table, TV and CD/DVD player (note: in WV the CD player is not compatible with i-pods which we didn’t realise, if we had we would have taken CDs with us, no real problem as you can borrow a wide selection of CDs from reception as well as DVDs). There was a dressing area between the bedroom and bathroom with a wardrobe and fridge, kettle and nespresso machine. The deck was a little small but it had two sun loungers, two chairs and a table – there is no umbrella to provide shade. Modern décor – all in all we were really pleased with the room and location. On the sunset side the sea is a little choppier but the breeze is gorgeous! The sunrise side has calmer water but no real breeze which we found a little unbearable at times – also there are more sea defences on sunrise side so your view may be interrupted. There is not really a bad location it all depends on what you prefer.

We went AI and found this great. All meals were served in the Dhonveli restaurant (overlooks ocean – bliss!). The restaurant is set on in 4 zones, 3 eating areas and 1 buffet area, the buffet area does get unbearably hot (I don’t know how the chefs cope!) so I did tend to dive in and out when getting food! This area can also become a little congested at peak times. Food was varied at all meal times. Breakfast – traditional cooked breakfast, eggs and waffles to order, array of different breads, meat, cheese, fruit cereal (skimmed, soya and full fat milk), pastries, jams, tea, coffee and juices, lunch – sandwiches, soup, cooked meat dishes, curry, plenty of salads, bread, pasts fish, dinner – lovely starters e.g. sushi, spring rolls, salads, soups, for main there was always meat, fish, pasta, curry and fresh dishes and gorgeous deserts ice cream, cheesecake, crumble, mousse, fruit, tarts, cakes etc. There was always something we could find (in fact it was often difficult to choose). On an evening it was lovely to sit on the outside decking of the restaurant and watch the sharks below – these seats do get taken early so either eat early or wait until later if you want these seats. Polite and friendly staff, well managed by the Restaurant Manager no complaints at all.

The island itself is lovely, gorgeous flowers lush vegetation throughout. There is sand everywhere so no need for shoes at all. Everywhere is immaculate, the sand is swept daily. I am not a fan of swimming pools on Maldivian Islands – why bother when the sea is so stunning! However, the infinity pool at Veligandu is beautiful. Well designed and maintained, lovely twinkling lights at night! We didn’t use it that much as the sea was such a draw but it really was a lovely pool. There are sun loungers placed around the pool but we never used these as enjoying the white sand is the glory of the Maldives; lying by a pool you could be anywhere but on the beach it is unmistakably the Maldives! The sun loungers by the pool do also get taken very quickly in the morning so if you do want one you need to locate yourself there quite early in the morning. There are plenty of sunloungers on the long spit of sand which is where we tended to locate ourselves. Locating yourself on the spit also means you can easily get drinks and you are near the best snorkelling. Some have said the snorkelling is not great at Veligandu but we found it to be brilliant! The coral is not as colourful as other islands but the marine life is great we saw an amazing range of fish as well as turtles (made my holiday!), a moral eel (which was amazing!), sharks and eagle rays. On several afternoons a group of five eagle rays came into the shoreline of the spit and glided around for an hour or so, truly amazing to be so close! You can swim out to the coral from the sand spit or go to the jetty at the very end of the sand spit and dive off there and you are straight onto the coral. The drop off is the best place to snorkel at one point we were surrounded by different shoals of fish and a shark below us – amazing memories! The snorkelling from our WV was okay but it was quite a way out to the drop off. During low tide you could walk through the sandy lagoon to the drop off but at high tide it was quite a long swim and as the sea was a little choppy we tended not to snorkel here but go the sand spit. At night we saw sharks and eagle rays from our deck. Eagle rays glide on the currents so when the sea was choppier we tended to see more rays.

On an evening there is some form of entertainment at the Thundi Bar (local band, cocktail night, presentation from the dive centre). We only went a few nights as we preferred to sit on our deck and watch the stars and look out for sharks! The overall feel of the island is low key. Most guest were couples, many of whom were honeymooners. We only saw one child staying there and I don’t think it would be a great island for children. We didn’t use the dive centre but we did go on one trip – the sunset dolphin cruise, this was wonderful.. we saw 3 dolphins and drinking a cocktail as the sun sets over the ocean was amazing. We had 2 weeks of glorious weather. We always go to the Maldives in July/August, traditionally the rainy season. After two years of perfect weather I was sure this year we would have some rainy days but no, wall to wall sunshine for 2 full weeks, some rain during the night and a light shower as we left – perfection! There is probably loads more I could say but this review is a already a little long. Happy to answer any specific questions! It was a wonderful holiday and we came back smiling and relaxed 

We are just back from Veligandu, this being our third trip to the Maldives. We found the island to be great, when we arrived on 6th Aug we were given a free upgrade to a Jacuzzi Water Villa which was amazing, the rooms are very big and was great to sit each night in the jacuzzi with a beer watching the sun go down and have your own private area to sunbathe or just relax. If you fancied a different surrounding there were plenty of sun loungers on the beach at various spots which some were normally free at all times of the day (although around the pool got busier earlier in the morning). We stayed on the west side of the island (sunset side) but would be tempted to stay on the spa (great by the way) side next time as the ocean is calmer, as the weather was mixed and quite windy the sea was alittle rougher this side but good for swimming.

We found the service to be good, everything ran like clockwork and the facilities of the bar and main buffet restaurant variety was excellent. My only criticism would be as we booked half board we had lunch a few times in the bar, but $20 for a toastie or $25 burger was abit much we thought.

We thought the resort is a good 4 star resort, we'd absolutely go back but would be tempted to go later in the year to get better weather - this was the only letdown of the holiday, it was quite overcast a few days and we had 3 solid days of rain which put a dampener on the holiday alittle. We definitely recommend the snorkelling trip and the best place to snorkell is at the end of the beach near the bar off the jetty.

A special note to Abdul, the room attentant, he was very helpful, friendly and did an excellent job, nothing was too much trouble for him and was genuinely had our interests at heart.

Overall, great place and would not hesitate to go back and recommend to all.

We have just come back from Veligandu Island with my husband where we spent our honeymoon. The island is majestic, more than beautiful, superb and very romantic! But I wouldn`t recommend this hotel to other couples - if you don`t want your romantic trip to be spoilt - please, DON`T GO TO VELIGANDU - CHOOSE ANOTHER MALDIVIAN ISLAND!!!!
The Veligandu has a HUDGE problem with overbooking - be aware of this fact and be careful! I personally saw at least 3 couples (and plus me and my husband) who were told at their arrival to the Veligandu that THEIR VILLA WAS OCCUPIED BY OTHER PERSONS!!!!!!!! This happenned to us...and to those 3 couples... So you can be sure - you wont` be moved into the villa you booked. We booked Water Villa - but when we arrived, our WVilla was occupied!!!!! And the manager suggested us to move into the Beach Villa...and that wasn`t what we want...we dreamt about Water Villa...It was very upsetting....

But the real NIGHTMAIRE is LUGGAGE DELIVERY. NEVER EVER AGREE TO GO BY MALDIVIAN AIR TAXI !!!!!!!!!! And if you went, never ever agree with the suggesting that your luggage go in the following flight. Maldivian Air Taxi LOST 5 bags !!!!!!!!!!!! I cant` understand it! It was terrible! They told us and some other persons that our bags would go with the next flight after us - BUT THIS WAS A PURE LIE !!!!!!! They just need time to unlock your bags and steel some things!!!! It was really terrible!

We have been waited for our bag the whole day!!!!!!!!!!!! MALDIVIAN AIR TAXI DID NOT DELIVERED IT!!!!! After 22 hour flight we weree dressed in dirty sweat clothes (jeans and jogging shoes) in a very very very hot weather of the Maldives. All our things were in that bag!!!! I`ve got sunburns (my protector also was in my luggage) we coudn`t step out of shadow.... We lost the whole day!!!!!!!! And the hotel services haven`t done anything with this situation! They didn`t want to bother their friend-company of Maldivian Air Taxi !!!!!! They didn`t want to give a call there - only after hours of our insistance. And the hotel manager just was telling us to wait !!!!!!! Nothing more. It was unbearable !

One of the hotel team even laughed at my red face (sunburned) !!!!!!!!!!!

Well it`s very upsetting for me to retell this story.

Veligandu also has other problems. Restaurant manager-in-chief IS A CURSE !!!!! He is so sticky!!!! He presses the persons, he doesn`t allow you to have your meal in peace! He would stand by you, looking howm you are eating if you don`t agree to buy any beach dinner from him....We ran away from him and tried to choose a table where he didn`t normally approach to.

If you have euros - exchange euros into dolars before your arrival to Veligandu. They don`t have euros at all to give you your change. And if you need to depart - they just don`t give you your change! Saying they don`t have anythig. "ANYTHING" is 84 euros !!!!!!!!!!!! And you have to provoke a scandal to get your 84 euros back!!!!!!!!!!! If you are calm and quiet they say - "We have no 84 euros to give you. Sorry bat you have to depart without the change"!!!!!!!!

So, I`m tied to tell about Veligandu. It is not a good hotel. Island and place are beautiful, but the hotel service and the luggage delivery sistem is TERRIBLE AND AWFUL

Well what can I say? This was our first holiday to the Maldives, and Veli lived up all to all of our expectations and more. We stayed in a JWV, and the accommodation was excellent. The room was big, airy and clean, and all of the facilities were excellent. We stayed on the west side of the island, and saw the most amazing sunsets. A memory that we will certainly cherish. It was amazing to just walk down our steps and enter the Indian Ocean. One thing that we loved to do, was to sit on our decking and just watch the fish. We never got bored of this throughout the two weeks.

The food was fantastic. A huge choice, and there really was something for everyone. When we had the opportunity to, we would sit outside on the decking and eat dinner, and watch the fish swim by.

There are quite a few things that need to be improved in order to make this a 5 star resort, but it is certainly a high 4 star.

You really will not regret booking this wonderful island.

My husband and I were on Velgandu for a week to celebrate out 25th wedding anniversary and it was just perfect! It was our 4th visit to the Maldives but our 1st to Veli. We have been to Lily Beach twice (before the island upgrade) and then last year we went to Reethi Beach. I have to say that Veli is the best that we have been to. We had a jacuzzi beach villa, which are exactly the same as the water villas and to be honest I prefered to be on the beach. All of the staff were friendly and more than helpful. I had read some negative reports, but I saw nothing to be negative about. The restaurant buffet was excellent every meal. I am quite fussy with my food, but I always found something to eat and was never hungry. Just a word of warning, I had read that they spray the island once a week to keep insects at bay, but to be honest I forgot. When they did it I thought that something was on fire because there was so much spray/smoke and rang the reception! I felt a bit of a fool afterwards! Unfortunately, both my husband and I did get bitten which has never happened on the other islands, but it certainly would not put me off going again. At the spa we both sampled our 15 minute massage that you get for free, and I was amazed when my husband suggested going a second time as he is most definitely not the sort of person to go to a spa! He even asked if we could take home the girl that did his!! The rooms are more than equipped for anything that you may need or want. They have a dvd/cd player and a docking station for your ipod. They have dvd's that you can borrow from reception. We had read that they had a dvd player so we did take a few of our own for moments that we just wanted to stay in the cool and chill out. The rooms are supplied with towelling gowns, flip flops, hair dryer and tea/coffe making facilities, which is replenished each day. With regard to the snorkelling we hired our stuff from the dive centre, but they are not open for very long hours so check exactly when so that you can get organised. They were very good there as we had a problem with one of our masks and they just exchanged them with no arguements. Anyway enough rambling, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, but the best thing I can say is make sure you go and make sure you have fun!

For Tripadvisor

We have just returned from our honeymoon on Veligandu… and all we can think of is going back! It was our first visit to the Maldives and the island and staff made it a perfect escape from real life, and gave us the honeymoon we’d been dreaming of.

The transfer at Male Airport to the seaplane is hassle free, a quick mini-bus ride with the air company’s shuttle vans and a short wait at the seaplane terminal. We were welcomed at Veligandu with a much-needed cold scented face towel and a refreshing fruit cocktail while the friendly receptionists led us through the check in formalities. This pretty much set the tone for the entire holiday, everything is well thought out and the smiling staff are always on hand to help out.

We stayed in Jacuzzi Water Villa 163 which is on the sunset side – sea is rougher than on the East side but we had plenty of calm sea too and had no problems. These villas are in a league on their own, large rooms, king size bed, terrace over the ocean with cushioned loungers and 2 chairs with a table. The luxury continues into the massive bathroom: the shower can comfortably fit a family and has both overhead and handheld showerheads, and there are 2 sinks. Full towel set including bathrobes and beach towels. And a pair of flip flops each. The bathroom has a sliding door opening onto another terrace with yet more loungers and the large Jacuzzi, with shutters opening onto the ocean – words simply can’t describe the magical sensation of relaxing in the Jacuzzi watching the sun set over the horizon.

Outside these villas the reef is one of the best snorkelling sites on the island where we saw almost every fish imaginable – we had fun chasing reef sharks with my video but these are very shy and dart away, not a worry at all. To see turtles, mantas or bigger sharks you need to go on the snorkelling trip – we didn’t do it as we left it too late but everyone who went recommends it.

Once we dragged ourselves away from the luxury of the villa we continued to be impressed. You walk to the restaurant or bar through lush greenery on sandy paths. The restaurant offered a great selection of starters, mains and desserts (cheeses too sometimes) and though I thought I’d get bored of it, the food is different everyday with enough choice for anyone. My wife had specific requirements which were cheerfully met by the head chef and restaurant manager – just ask if you need anything particular. The food was always very well cooked and inventively presented, the only issue we found was our weight gain, but it’s worth it 

The beaches and pool are excellently maintained and the beaches offer enough space that we felt quite secluded. Sunbeds and hammocks dot the island and provide a spectacular view in a very relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. We’ve never felt so chilled out before!

The bar makes a lovely place to end the evening, some days with background music, other times there was dancing – even then you can escape to a quiet corner if you prefer.

The spa centre offer some amazing massages – we tried 4 and wish we did more, we got a better and more professional treatment than we’ve had before (and we’ve tried quite a few). You get discounts for subsequent treatments and they are happy to explain all the treatments and what would suit you and your wallet best.

Our advice would be: (1) go there, you won’t regret it (2) don’t take long sleeves or closed shoes, you won’t use them.
