“VELI GOOD!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

We didn't know what to expect from Veligandu as many of the reviews on tripadvisor were excellent but there was still the odd one or two reviews where the response wasn't so great.

We arrived into Male and straight into a lounge where we waited for a seaplane to take us to Veligandu. We waited around 90 minutes or so for other guests to arrive from other flights so they could transfer as many people as possible. This was the worst part of our experience as we had a 13 hour connecting flight to get there and we had to wait another 90 minutes for a seaplane. However the service in the lounge was exceptional and we were treated to complimentary drinks and they even made us some sandwiches.

The seaplane journey was around 15-20 mins to Veligandu and the sights on the plane of all the different islands/atolls and reefs in the sea was great! The seaplane is an experience in itself and definitely a little weird when it lands right in the ocean but great fun!

We were then taken to the reception where we received a complimentary drink again and a member of staff showed us to our Jacuzzi Water Villas and explained all the functions of the room as well as general questions about the Island. He was very welcoming and made us feel right at home. The Jacuzzi Water Villas are great and spacious inside. The bathroom is nicely decorated and the Jacuzzi area outside has two big wooden windows of which you can open and gaze at the sea while you sit in a lovely Jacuzzi. Also they have a decking area for you to sunbathe in front of the sea. You also have your own access into the sea which was great for us as there was a house reef only around 200metres from the house where we snorkelled daily and saw some great fish!

The Island itself is quite small but it is meant to be intimate and private. The gym was small but very well equipped and they had a 7aside football pitch along with a volleyball/badminton court. Additionally they have a games room which has Darts, Table Tennis, Pool and Fuseball. We enjoyed the facilities quite a lot and I managed to play football with the locals almost on every day of my trip which was great fun! The staff love their football over there :D

We were on the all inclusive package and thus we always ate at the Dhonveli restaurant and we never went to the a la carte restaurant. Saying that, the food at the Dhonveli restaurant was great and we were exceptionally well treated by all of the Chef's who always made us alternative dishes due to our vegetarian diet. I would like to recommend three chefs Sumi, Leslie and Karthik who were very helpful and made some especially tasty food. Also the waiters were always very responsive and helpful. The vice manager there Abdullah was a great help and very sociable. Thundi Bar also had great service and their cocktails were quite nice! Some of their stuff is on the all inclusive package which was great for us.

Veligandu also hold an event every evening at the Thundi Bar to keep their guests entertained. The crab race and the live band were our favourite nights and were great fun. Also if you have the chance I would recommend the sunset punch cruise (where we saw dolphins and the sun setting into the ocean) and a day trip to Rashdoo (local fishing village) where you can pick up a great souvenir (better than the ones they sell on the island).

Last of all was the Dive team. Me and my brother did our 4 qualifying dives with the Divepro team in Maldives and it was so fun and great that we decided to do another 3 dives with the team. We saw many fish underwater including white tip/black tip sharks, grey reef sharks, turtles, moray eels, jellyfish, lion fish and leaf fish to name a few. Our instructor was Samir and he was absolutely great! He helped us a great lot when we did our first dives to get comfortable with the equipment and the environment and he dived with us on every dive but we loved his company and he made our diving experience great! We would love to dive with him again one day! The rest of the dive team were also great and very helpful - so whichever diver accompanies you, you will be in for a treat.

Veligandu on the whole is a great resort in the Maldives and does the simple things well. It is attractively priced and benefits from exceptional service which is probably the Island's greatest asset. The only things which can be improved is that Wi-fi is only available at the Thundi Bar and we had to walk all the way there from the room (about 10 minute walk) to make a skype call or check emails. If they could make this available in the rooms then that would be great. Also the only other thing was that items in a minibar did not get replaced as frequently as we liked however this was a minor setback.

On the whole the Island is a great place to visit and stay and you will not regret your choice. It deserves the great reviews it has and I honestly believe it's service is second to none. Veli Special holiday for us!

Room Tip: If you have a villa on the sunset side of the island the views are really nice if there is a clear s...

I think my husband and I must have stayed at a different Veligandu to everybody else this is our
6th visit to The Maldives (different islands) and was very disappointed.
The Welcome - what welcome before we have been greeted by two or three members of staff playing Maldivian drums but nothing - asked by reception if we want lunch we had better go now as service finished at 2.00 pm - lunch and all the food for the whole of the two weeks was absolutely excellent - staff could do with a bit more training. Our water Jacuzzi villa number 154 on first look brilliant - outside the steps down into the sea had been repaired that many times they
were slippy and dangerous there was no rail on the right hand side to stop you falling into the sea
Management this is a health and safety issue, everytime you had a show it flooded the bathroom . I think they are building another bar and a good thing to bar at the moment well you might be sitting in a bar anywhere - management wheres the atmosphere and the Maldivian spirit
we would not recommend Veligandu to anybody much better islands with better service and cheaper so will not be visiting again as I said we must have stayed at another Island called Veligandu to everybody else.

My husband and I have just come back from the most amazing week at Veligandu. After crawling through reviews on what must have felt like over 100 different resorts, we chose Veligandu thanks to our excellent travel agent “Simply Maldives” who offered the best price and were very quick to respond to all our requests.

It was our first time in the Maldives and we were really impressed with the whole experience! It’s by far the closest thing to paradise on earth! The island suited us perfectly- you can walk around it in about 30mins or so and was just the perfect in every way. I could return tomorrow just to feel the wonderful soft sand again.. No photo could do this island justice, believe me.

Our Jacuzzi Water Villa: Couldn’t have gone for a better accommodation. We had requested for a Sunset facing villa via Simply Maldives and sure enough on arrival we checked into our Sunset Jacuzzi Water Villa - It was contemporary and lush all rolled up in one! You could actually go straight down to the lagoon from our sundeck which meant we could go swimming or snorkeling whenever we wanted to (although for the best snorkeling is a bit further out in the lagoon just off the beach where the house reef is located). And did I mention the outdoor Jacuzzi?! :)) The Jacuzzi water villa was easily worth the money for us. Fantastic views of the crystal clear ocean.

The resort itself: We chose the All-inclusive plus package so basically all food/drinks and activities were included. Wasn’t sure at first if the all-inclusive concept was for us but the variety and quality of the food provided was excellent (as a vegetarian I was especially blown away by the food).
The pool area was immaculately kept, the resort has a gorgeous infinity pool and a kids pool. And next to the pool is the Thundi Bar were we enjoyed spending evenings - the staff are friendly and attentive where ever you are from the groundskeepers to the bar staff and are a credit to the hotel.

There were many activities and excursions; we went on the complimentary sunset cruise on our second night and saw the beautiful dolphins swimming up with the boat - was a beautiful excursion. And the snorkelling was one of the best I’ve ever done! My husband went kayaking on a few of the days and really enjoyed it. Overall I think Veligandu is a well-kept resort that would suit honeymooners (we didn't see many children/families, mainly couples). One annoyance though was that the internet connection could be unreliable at times, but we didn’t really mind since we try to stay offline while on holiday.

I always thought that everyone was exaggerating about the Maldives, but now that I’ve been to Veligandu I know that the reviews weren’t lying. I don’t think I’ve ever been this relaxed on holiday. The best thing was that I didn’t have to wear shoes for one week! I would definitely visit again. Thank you Veligandu!

Veligandu is literally amazing. A 20 minute sea plane transfer from Male which was fun.

We stayed a week at the beginning of September 2013 in a JWV. Weather was excellent (30 deg sun everyday) although it is hard to predict weather anywhere. We were in room 108 on the sunrise side. Water was calm and loads of fish etc just down the steps of the villa if you went for a swim which we did everyday. The otherside of the island was abit choppy when we went round on a kayak. Believe this depends on the time of year which side is more choppy so something to bear in mind.

The food was simply unbelievable, we chose the AI option, buffet style with freshly cooked dishes also. Loads of choice to suit all. We paid extra for dinner on the beach on our wedding night, Wagyu steaks and Lobster, enough said.

We had our wedding on the island and all of the staff we brilliant. It literally could not have been better. There was no rush, it was all organised for us and we just turned up and enjoyed the day.

The spa was also amazing. Staff so friendly and the surroundings relaxing.

We like most people I guess trawled through Trip advisor investigating all the hotels / islands. If you want one that is not over populated and gives you that desert island feeling then Veligandu is the choice, trust me.

Basically this is the best holiday we have been on.

They could include wine and spirits on the AI in the mini bar and free Wi-Fi in the rooms #9free WIFI available in reception/bar) but if that is the only constructive comments we thought of it shows how good this place is!

Also don't worry about bringing shoes, you will be barefoot all week!

Room Tip: In September rooms 101 to 110, sunrise side are best.

Having just completed a report on Meeru Island here is our Veligandu report. If you have never visited the Maldives then please read on. 8th visit to the Maldives having previously visited Meeru Island (3 times) Ranvelli, Sun Island, Hudhuranfushi, Kuredu and Vilamendhoo. Visited for two weeks 5th Oct. Upon arrival at Meeru we were offered 5 nights here at Veligandu. Had read a lot about the island so the offer was too good to turn down and we are so glad we made the choice. All islands are different, some larger than others, some have more facilities than others but all have their own character so please don't ask me which is the best. Other islands allocate you your own table and waiter which is nice because you know where you sit for every meal. However...at Veligandu you sit where you want which made a nice change. The restaurant is right near the waters edge so every meal time is picturesque. Some island restaurants don't offer this. It at this point we want to mention Abdulah. If the island management read this he is first class and represents all that's excellent with this island. Thank you Abdulah. Its only 30 mins maximum to walk around the island. Other islands have longer walks. Personal choice again. The island has a lovely 'spit' of sand protruding into the ocean at one end where you can sun bathe and take in its beauty. The one and only bar area is here. Other islands have more bars. Again, personal choice. It was never busy here. The seating and layout of the bar is excellent. With its doors open you can sit in the bar area and see the ocean on all sides. There is free wi fi in this area and ok it might be a little slow but you can at least keep in touch with the outside world. There is slight sand erosion along one side of the bar area but they are at least pumping sand from the sea back onto this area. Ok the sight of long pipes along the beach spoilt our holiday pics which is a shame but I am sure the pumping will only be for a few weeks. The pool area is excellent and despite having beach towels in your rooms every sun lounger by the pool had a towel rolled up and placed on it each morning. We never had a problem finding a lounger and yes ok, there are not many around the pool but that did not bother us, we wandered onto the sand 'spit' and soon found one. We stayed in a jacuzzi beach villa which was lovely. Every room had its own hammock. In fact there were hammocks everywhere. We love snorkling and this island has a lovely reef and we saw and swam alongside a turtle on the first day. By all means read our reports on other islands and don't hesitate to contact me if you want any tips or advice. Recommend Veligandu ? Definitely. Want to return here ? Definitely. Best Island so far? Very very possibly.

Spent ten nights on this island with my husband for our honeymoon and it was the most perfect end to a brilliant wedding. Staff were so lovely and there wasn't anything they wouldn't try to do for you. Welcome drink on arrival via sea plane and smooth check in. We had a water villa with a private Jacuzzi and it was stunning! Simple but effective. The main restaurant offered a wide variety of tasty dishes and we both out on a few pounds from 10 nights of constantly eating! Excursions are a bit pricey we only chose to do the dolphin watching and a trip to a local traditional island to learn more about the Maldivian culture. We did a few water sports at our resort but other than that it was pure lounging and snorkelling around or villa. It was everything and more and I will never be able to do it true justice via words.

We have the Veli vibe seriously this place is so amazing and simply stunning. You can do as much or as little as you like. We landed yesterday having had our second visit to this island and we did go to another resort in October 2011 so 3 trips to the Maldives now in total and something to compare Veligandu to. We have loved both jacuzzi water villas 163 last time and 106 this time. We really cannot fault this place. We noticed this time some coral regrowth which is wonderful to see. We love snorkelling and this island has a good house reef to enjoy! Even when the resort is busy you can still go in the pool and be the only one in it. The beach is fantastic and wonderfully soft sand to walk in. We had a spa treatment again on this visit. On our previous visit we had the honeymoon treatment and this time the full moon - a must for the spa goer! The staff have respect for your modesty which was not quite so prevalent at the other resort we have been to - lets just say boob grace! The staff are so so nice and it's great to see after 3 years lots of the staff are still there which proves this is a great resort because I'm sure they would have moved on if it wasn't. We wish to thank all the staff at veligandu for making this such a wonderful experience for us and they made us so welcome as always. They go out of there way to make things right for you and if you really get talking to them they are really interesting and educational. The food is fantastic and we never get bored. The sous chefs and the head chef Frank always chat to you and ask after your day. We would like to say a special thanks to frank and his sous for the food. Name, Abdullah, Shakeel, Moosa, Kertie, Wyanne, Chaminda (hope spelt right), and special thanks to Salem and Fathuhulla without whom none of this would have been possible. We will be coming back and can't wait to see you all and Veligandu very soon.
