“Numerous Maldives Visits. First time here. Please read this”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

Having just completed a report on Meeru Island here is our Veligandu report. If you have never visited the Maldives then please read on. 8th visit to the Maldives having previously visited Meeru Island (3 times) Ranvelli, Sun Island, Hudhuranfushi, Kuredu and Vilamendhoo. Visited for two weeks 5th Oct. Upon arrival at Meeru we were offered 5 nights here at Veligandu. Had read a lot about the island so the offer was too good to turn down and we are so glad we made the choice. All islands are different, some larger than others, some have more facilities than others but all have their own character so please don't ask me which is the best. Other islands allocate you your own table and waiter which is nice because you know where you sit for every meal. However...at Veligandu you sit where you want which made a nice change. The restaurant is right near the waters edge so every meal time is picturesque. Some island restaurants don't offer this. It at this point we want to mention Abdulah. If the island management read this he is first class and represents all that's excellent with this island. Thank you Abdulah. Its only 30 mins maximum to walk around the island. Other islands have longer walks. Personal choice again. The island has a lovely 'spit' of sand protruding into the ocean at one end where you can sun bathe and take in its beauty. The one and only bar area is here. Other islands have more bars. Again, personal choice. It was never busy here. The seating and layout of the bar is excellent. With its doors open you can sit in the bar area and see the ocean on all sides. There is free wi fi in this area and ok it might be a little slow but you can at least keep in touch with the outside world. There is slight sand erosion along one side of the bar area but they are at least pumping sand from the sea back onto this area. Ok the sight of long pipes along the beach spoilt our holiday pics which is a shame but I am sure the pumping will only be for a few weeks. The pool area is excellent and despite having beach towels in your rooms every sun lounger by the pool had a towel rolled up and placed on it each morning. We never had a problem finding a lounger and yes ok, there are not many around the pool but that did not bother us, we wandered onto the sand 'spit' and soon found one. We stayed in a jacuzzi beach villa which was lovely. Every room had its own hammock. In fact there were hammocks everywhere. We love snorkling and this island has a lovely reef and we saw and swam alongside a turtle on the first day. By all means read our reports on other islands and don't hesitate to contact me if you want any tips or advice. Recommend Veligandu ? Definitely. Want to return here ? Definitely. Best Island so far? Very very possibly.

Spent ten nights on this island with my husband for our honeymoon and it was the most perfect end to a brilliant wedding. Staff were so lovely and there wasn't anything they wouldn't try to do for you. Welcome drink on arrival via sea plane and smooth check in. We had a water villa with a private Jacuzzi and it was stunning! Simple but effective. The main restaurant offered a wide variety of tasty dishes and we both out on a few pounds from 10 nights of constantly eating! Excursions are a bit pricey we only chose to do the dolphin watching and a trip to a local traditional island to learn more about the Maldivian culture. We did a few water sports at our resort but other than that it was pure lounging and snorkelling around or villa. It was everything and more and I will never be able to do it true justice via words.

We have the Veli vibe seriously this place is so amazing and simply stunning. You can do as much or as little as you like. We landed yesterday having had our second visit to this island and we did go to another resort in October 2011 so 3 trips to the Maldives now in total and something to compare Veligandu to. We have loved both jacuzzi water villas 163 last time and 106 this time. We really cannot fault this place. We noticed this time some coral regrowth which is wonderful to see. We love snorkelling and this island has a good house reef to enjoy! Even when the resort is busy you can still go in the pool and be the only one in it. The beach is fantastic and wonderfully soft sand to walk in. We had a spa treatment again on this visit. On our previous visit we had the honeymoon treatment and this time the full moon - a must for the spa goer! The staff have respect for your modesty which was not quite so prevalent at the other resort we have been to - lets just say boob grace! The staff are so so nice and it's great to see after 3 years lots of the staff are still there which proves this is a great resort because I'm sure they would have moved on if it wasn't. We wish to thank all the staff at veligandu for making this such a wonderful experience for us and they made us so welcome as always. They go out of there way to make things right for you and if you really get talking to them they are really interesting and educational. The food is fantastic and we never get bored. The sous chefs and the head chef Frank always chat to you and ask after your day. We would like to say a special thanks to frank and his sous for the food. Name, Abdullah, Shakeel, Moosa, Kertie, Wyanne, Chaminda (hope spelt right), and special thanks to Salem and Fathuhulla without whom none of this would have been possible. We will be coming back and can't wait to see you all and Veligandu very soon.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013 via mobile

Returned on the 25 th of October and we wanted to stay in our piece of paradise for ever. What can I say that hasn't been said before? Nothing!! From the moment we arrived at Male airport it was seamless, stressless and totally wonderful.
All the staff are some of the most endearing people I have ever had the pleasure to meet, they couldn't do enough for you. Always greeted you with a smile and made my husband and I feel like we were so special.
I feel really bad that I can't remember all their names but every single one deserve to be mentioned.
The buffet restaurant was amazing, we were there for two weeks and we had a different meal at lunch and dinner. The tastes were amazing I lost count how many times I said mmmm, amazing, my taste buds were truly alive!!!
The head waiter in the restaurant was just quality, he " mucked" in with his staff and was just so welcoming, something managers from all walks of life could learn from.
We had a beach villa complete with hot tub. It was heaven. It was cleaned twice a day with a bed turn down service on a night. The mini bar was replaced daily, and although we don't drink a lot what was included in the AIP was adequate, although my husband did comment on the limited cocktails available on the AIP that aside no real issues.
Our villa was on the sunrise side of the island, although we never saw the sun rise! We opted for this villa as I'm a light sleeper and we both agreed that the sea may have kept me awake, in the light of things we made the right decision as unusually for October the sea was choppy (on the sunset side), which was due to the typhoon that had occurred in India, in which we saw a fair amount of rain, but it didn't spoil things in fact the rain was quite welcoming at times.
We met "Harry" and Harriet the Islands resident pelicans, and the fruit bats which we both loved.
We had our welcome massage which was wonderful, we meant to book in for another but time went too quickly.
The sunset/dolphin cruise was amazing, the dolphins couldn't have done more to make people happy swimming, playing and doing some amazing pirouettes.
My husband injured his hand which put a stop to his snorkelling, but we still saw sharks, mantas and stingrays as well as the most wonderful fish. My hubby wanted to see a turtle but alas he didn't ,so there is our excuse to return to this wonderful wonderful island called Veligandu who we both love to bits
Thankyou Veligandu for our most amazing holiday on paradise

This is simply amazing.

My partner and I have been here twice and there is still no where else we would rather be!

It is paradise personified: We stayed in Jacuzzi water bungalow the room had everything you needed we stayed on the sunset side so every night could watch the sun go down whilst in our Jacuzzi sipping champagne!!!!

I know it already sounds unreal and it just gets better: the resort is stunning pure tranquillity. We love snorkelling and it is amazing here we went out everyday and it never got tiresome. We saw: Mata rays, sting rays, eagle rays, dozens of turtles, black tip and white tip reef sharks, a gator shark, octopus, lion fish and countless others simply stunning!

We also went on the dolphin sunset trip (not to be missed) loads of dolphins all playing around the boat as the sun goes down! We were also fortunate enough to see dolphins from our villa!

The food is great we have been twice and never eaten in the a la carte restaurant as simply haven't felt the need! The buffet is vast and changes every night!

Service is always super friendly cant fault it I feel anyone who says they are not friendly are just not friendly people themselves and expect servants not service!

The Spa is great we used this a few times and again could not fault it they are always very friendly and make you feel very relaxed.

The only things to make the experience better would be the following: all inclusive drinks selection could be better and it would also be nice to have a wider range of products a Hendricks and tonic would be amazing in this climate!

Also the water sports/ dive centre is fantastic but wouldn't it be great if they had some more excursions maybe trying to snorkel with whale sharks things like this? Having said that the last time we went they started doing night snorkelling which was incredible its a different world!

All in all a massive thank you to everyone involved on this Island its are favourite and it will be difficult to choose another when going to the Maldives!

the quality of the drinks and other disapointments.
We arrived at the seaplane transfer lounge which was cool, well stocked with refreshment and a welcome change from the airport hustle to pick up a short seaplane transfer to the island (first drop so only 20 minutes in total). The initial welcome with fruit punch and cold towers and luggage taken away by helpful staff was excellent.
Reception advised that our room would be ready at 1.30pm after arriving at noon (local island time, which is one hour ahead of Male time). We returned at 1.30pm only to be told that there was still a delay with the room and ‘overhearing’ another guest say that they were in the room we were allocated we did complain to the ‘manager’.
Don’t misinterpret this lack for information with bad service I got the impression that the staff did not like to disappoint us with bad news, as the staff have been very helpful and willing. However they do need guidance about telling the truth to the customers rather than fobbing people off.
Eventually we spoke to the duty manager who was at least able to tell us the truth with the room in that the previous guests had not checked into their new room. We then went to our room to with the manager to ensure it was being cleaned as we had been given so much mis-information over the last two and a half hours we were sceptical. However true to his word the room was being cleaned while we waited on the balcony.
After a rest from the very long journey, and wait, we did have a good look round the island which is idyllic and as you would expect from a tropical paradise. The beaches were sandy with palm trees and a beautifully clear blue sea, straight out of the brochure. You can walk around the island in just over half an hour but beware the two hundred-metre pipe dredging sand from one side of the island to just outside the bar.
The Jacuzzi beach villa was very large and secluded right on the shoreline with its own hammock and sun beds etc.
The infinity pool is good but there are limited numbers of sun beds around the pool and the alternatives are a few on the beach or back to the villa to use your own facilities. The gym is a little dated but fine for this type of resort where there is very little interest in this facility, I only saw four or five people in total using this facility over a couple of weeks.
We signed up to a number of activities whilst we were there including half day snorkelling ($25/person) and half day snorkelling via speed boat ($55/person) and certainly the cheaper trip could be recommended whilst the speed boat trip was a difficult journey with the swell and also the snorkelling was not that special once we arrived.
Most of the guests appear to be on an all-inclusive plan, which obviously covers meals and drinks, but be aware there is a constant sales message from some of the staff to upgrade meals to ‘Moonlight dinner’ or “Beach BBQ’. For these set menus or a visit to the other ‘A la carte’ restaurant you will pay a hefty premium ($160-$290/couple plus drinks) which become more attractive after a number of days of buffet style self-service food.
We tried the moonlight dinner for one of our last nights and whilst the evening started well it was decidedly average occasion once the rain started before we had any food at all. We were moved inside to the ‘exclusive’ restaurant and whilst the food was very good the overall cost was not worth the $220 cost that included one bottle of wine. The couple that cancelled after it was rained off did the right thing!!
That being said the food produced by the chefs was always excellent with a good choice of options. The opening times were regimented and generally too short (breakfast 8.00-10.00am, dinner 7.30-9.30pm) so for dinner you were expected to have finished by 9.30pm.
There is one bar in the resort and it is a vast building with a very impressive roof. You will not struggle to get a seat even at busy times but may have to accept areas where is no breeze which can get a bit warm. The all inclusive package for drinks is where you notice the ethos to get clients to pay more as any decent drinks will cost you money, yes they have basic gin, vodka, whiskey and brandy but to enjoy a straight whisky you will need to spend. When you compare the AI package here it is much easier to compare to Egypt (poor quality limited selection) rather than the Caribbean or Mauritius. We had two weeks in thebodyholiday in St Lucia in may this year on an AI package and the quality of the drinks and service was unsurpassed and that was for $3000 dollars less for a fortnight!!
Yes the island is better than almost anything in the Caribbean and the informality of the dress code is to be encouraged but overall this resort is falling too far short in too many areas to be in any top 25 list.
From the website we noticed that all rooms have wifi as of 29th September but don’t believe everything you read! There is no Internet anywhere apart from reception and the bar but beware the speed is that slow and intermittent you will get annoyed with it. You can sign in with one device per room so if both want to sign in forget it and if you are lucky enough to have Internet for an hour, never mind you will be logged out so you can log in again.
Overall we had a pleasant relaxing holiday and the building works, whilst noticeable, where not intrusive but the cost for the quality of what was on offer was not good value. I suspect this resort will not improve, as they would appear to be adding as many rooms as is feasible despite some of the limitations that exist currently.

Stayed here 28th September for 9 nights and had a fantastic time. Agree with all the positive things mentioned in reviews below but thought would give out some info/opinions on more practical issues not covered or mentioned:

Booked with Jai at Travellab at short notice and we had a Kuoni holiday at a much discounted price! Travelled with BA in economy but most couples were assigned 3 seats between 2 so plenty of space. Left LGW 1 hour late but arrived Male on time. After collecting luggage we were misdirected initially by the Kuoni rep (who we never heard from or spoke with again until night before departure) to the seaplane check-in desk where our luggage ((including hand) was collectively weighed (25kg pp max allowed) and we taken by minibus to the cool seaplane lounge. Initially we were told we would only be waiting 15 minutes however it ended up being 1 1/4 hour wait with a similar delay on our return but was no big deal.

Room (Jacuzzi Water Villa 169 west/sunset facing)was amazing, very spacious with plenty of storage, drawers and hangers (15), digital safe, cotton waffle bathrobes, 2 pairs of flip-flops (approx size 8 UK), Umbrella, hairdryer (proper one but compact size and 1000w) ipod docking station with alarm clock, coffee machine (2 nespresso pods supplied per day) kettle with an assortment of Twining teas (inc English breakfast)and creamer, large mugs, mini bar (replenished daily) with prices as follows (free if on AI)

Water (1.5l) $4 (2 provided plus 2 additional 1l bottles in room FOC and replaced daily)
Soft drinks or iced tea (250/300ml) $5 (coke/diet coke/sprite/Fanta/bitter lemon, peach/lemon iced tea)
Beer $6.50 (2 Lion cans & 2 Carlsberg)
Spirits (5cl) $9-12
Wine (187cl) $8.50 (1 white and 1 red)
small bottle orange or mixed fruit juice $6 (2)
snacks $3-5.5

2 large beach towels are supplied in the room (they're also supplied on the loungers by the pool so no need to lug them there!) and will be replaced with clean ones at evening turn down if you leave them on the floor.

Bed was a bit hard for my liking (OK for Mr W) but mattress toppers are available, just ask. The TV showed news channels (SKY and BBC World) plus a few other English speaking channels but hardly watched it tbh. There is a DVD player and we did watch a couple of DVDs we brought from the UK with no problems. Plenty of UK 3 pin plug sockets but there were also a couple of US flat 2 pin ones as well. A/C wasn't working one day but 1 call to reception and someone was fixing it 10 minutes later.

Bathroom (with full width sliding doors to the side deck) had shampoo, conditioner and body wash supplied in the shower plus cotton buds, soap and cotton wool. Side deck off the bathroom had a wonderful large hot tub with a variable temperature control, (plenty of room for 2) and two steamer type lounger chairs with thick padded cushions. Deck was always half in the shade/half sun all day long and had outside lights so could sit outside in the evening.

Lovely outdoor main deck with comfy sun loungers and steps straight into sea - very close to house reef . Strong cooling breeze on west side of island at that time of year so very comfortable sitting in the sun but very little breeze on east side. Downside of that was that the sea was a bit choppy when swimming/snorkelling off villa steps towards reef and took me a few days to get sea legs! Deck was in full shade until 11am and then no shade at all from about 3pm. A parasol would have been a good idea. Your villa number is on the deck so you can make sure you climb up the right steps when return from swimming/snorkelling!

Gift shop sells Flippers for $49, snorkels from $23 and mask/snorkel sets from $45 so good idea to bring your own although they can be hired from the dive centre. No motorised watersports here (banana boats, jet skis, water skiing etc)

They are building/refurbishing west facing beach villas but area is screened off and minimal noise.

Used the fitness centre several times. It's small but A/C with treadmill (NB Speed is in mph which has caught several people out I think!) Recumbent Exercise Bike, elliptical cross trainer, free weights and machines and a fitness ball. Water is available in a fridge which you are supposed to sign for (so may be chargeable if you're not AI) There are also weighing scales so you can keep track of the pounds going on!

Entertainment is very low key, video night, crab racing, however they did have a very good local band one night.

There are two types of white wine available in bar/restaurant, if you don't specify they bring you sweet but dry is available. If you want to take a glass of wine back to your room ask for it to takeaway and they'll give you a large plastic wine glass almost filled to top, however ,how much will be remaining in it by the time you get back to your room is another matter due to soft sand on paths! Bar prices as follows:
Water $3.50
Soft drinks or iced tea (250/300ml) $5
Beer $6.00
Spirits (branded) $8-10
Spirits (house) $7
Wine (glass) $6.50 full bottles from $25
Cocktails $10.50 (on AI+ 7 alcoholic and 2 non alcoholic cocktails were included)

Food was very good, even Mr W said so and he doesn't like buffets! Nothing was repeated during our stay there (more's the pity as there were a few excellent dishes) and some fab desserts with no soggy pastry bottoms in sight! Had seafood BBQ on beach, menus posted below which was lovely but very windy! Meat BBQ also available or can mix and match.

Clothing: men - don't take long trousers, you will not wear them, did not see a single gent in trousers the whole stay. Ladies - don't take heels, you will not wear them believe me. The paths are sandy but a little gritty in places and the wooden decking gets hot so flip-flops are a good idea but many went barefoot the whole time.

Public Bathroom floors are tiled, floor in restaurant and bars are sandy but kept very clean.
Had a few spa treatments, service very good and reasonably priced.

Books/magazines available near reception to borrow, counted over 80 books in English!

Reception will change large dollar bills for smaller ones (e.g. $1) for tipping if you need them.

Guests: resort was at 90% occupancy when we where there but only saw others at mealtimes, always seemed to be sunbeds available around the pool (didn't use it ourselves) and under parasols on the sand bar and generally dotted around the island. About 30% seemed to be young (honeymooners) and the rest up to 70 year olds! Majority seemed to be European (50% of those prob British) with a few Russian, Chinese and Asian. Only a couple of toddlers there and a couple of older teens with family.

Weather: could not have been better. There were a few showers overnight and one day we had a very heavy bout of rain but within an hour it had started and finished and we were back outside in sunshine.

Niggles/suggestions (just because I am a picky person!):
The shower door had quite a gap which meant that every time the rain shower was used the floor was flooded, bit of a design fault there. Also there was mould on the metal trim around the base of the shower.

Room furniture was looking a bit worn and corners chipped here and there.

We were woken by alarm on ipod docking station going off at 6am on first morning and spent ages trying to work out how to turn it off. Thought room boys would check these things before new guests arrive.

Despite resort being sprayed, I was bitten 4 times on my lower legs. Spa ladies said they were sand fly bites but they looked, felt and lasted the same as mozzie bites! Mr W was not bitten at all!

As mentioned earlier a parasol on the deck would be a good idea as no shade after about 3pm.

Full board was too much for us, would have preferred half board with perhaps the option of all drinks included.

Only had breakfast a few mornings but nearly always had to ask for more tea and coffee, cups weren't routinely filled.

White wine in mini bar was not very good however on the last night it was a different Chardonnay which was bit better. As this is a recent introduction (wine in the mini bar) perhaps they are trying out different brands.

There was no paper towel to use with the sanitizer spray to clean the machines in the gym after use and a couple of times there were no hand towels either.

It would have been nice to have a "Tip box" at reception so we could tip the "unseen staff" who undoubtedly work so hard behind the scenes. If one was there then it wasn't very obvious as I did look!

Conclusion:
Fantastic holiday, ideal place to chill and recharge batteries. Not felt so relaxed on holiday in a long time and we would both return in a heartbeat (which is saying something as we've never returned to same place twice)
