“Also nice compare to Anantara D”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2014

They have more nicer water villa at the end which is more private.
Dont choose the one near the pier.
The swimming pool is smaller than D. Go for D one if you want to swim.
beach are the same nice.
Staff are friendly always with smile.
Very good visit and Im sure i will come back!

Room Tip: choose the new water villa.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2014

My wife and I were planning for our honeymoon. And we scoured the internet high and low, through trip advisors, agoda, hotels.com and much more. As both of us are beach lovers, we were specifically targetting Maldives. To be more specific, an overwater bungalow. There were a whole bunch of resorts which does provide such stays, but the price does not match our budget. Furthermore, when it comes to Maldives, you are also looking for the convenience of an airport transfer service.

For those who are not quite aware of the location of Maldives, they are actually a bunch of many individual big islands, with lagoons and coral reefs and seperated sparingly by the massive Indian ocean. So when you're in the plane right before reaching Male, Maldives Ibrahim Naser international airport, you can see islands out of nowhere in the middle of the ocean, yeah that sorta stuff! Exciting right?

Airport transfer. Most of the resorts in Maldives, does provide transfer, by air or sea, but at a very costly price. You are already paying quite a premium for an overwater bungalow so somehow you are looking for that value added service for an airport transfer at an affordable price.

After much searching, email enquiries, quotation requests, we finally chanced upon Anantara Veli. A resort located 30-40 minutes boat ride away from the airport. The website for Anantara Veli is super friendly. Technically, you don't even have to email them to ask for quotations as you can easily choose your itinerary and room types and all the prices will be shown to you. Certain resorts requires you to key in so many of your particular details (as though you are obliged to take them since you wanna know the price) but not Anantara Veli.

We did emailed them to ask about the deposit upon checkin in, things like the procedures of how it is gonna be like once we are at the airport, where do we go for the transfer, who do we look for and what do we do etc. Replies from them are pretty quick and they always give answers for your questions with elaborate details. Communications prior and after hotel booking is simply good.

Ibrahim Naser International Airport is Maldives main airport. Took us 40-45 minutes to clear customs, so be prepared for a slow arrival process. On the email we sent to Anantara Veli, we told them our flight will be reaching 1120 Male's time. Almost 1200, we were still queueing waiting to be cleared and we were worried that we might be missing our transfer. But lucky us...

Upon reaching the airport at the arrival gates, we don't have to even search far as a whole bunch of very friendly faces, filled with smiles holding up the Anantara Veli signboard waiting for us right at the front. Their holding area were also strategically located at the front of the airport's arrival gate, so that's the first thing you will see if you don't see any of the staffs. Dressed in relax beach style white top and pants, they offered to carry our luggage (which we did not have) and our bags (which we politely declined as it's light). There was around 8 people waiting in their lounge, so basically we were the last to clear customs and everyone was waiting for us and we were glad everyone had the patience to wait .

The transfer was by sea. The staffs took us to a normal speedboat. Before boarding, we were each given a life vest and led into the boat one by one. In the boat, we were provided with chilled mineral water and a damp towel which was soaked with lime/lemon water. I used that to wipe my face to freshen myself up from a 4 hours flight. The travel by sea was ok. Speedboats and occasional bumps in the sea are expected.

We were greeted at the jetty by 5 staffs of Anantara Veli. All of their faces lit up with smiles, you can literally see their humility in their faces like it somehow just rubs off you to have that smile and greet everyone. There was also a guy playing the Chenda (I think), which looks like a wooden drum hanging horizontally across him. We were accompanied by the beats and each couple were asked for their photo to be taken by the resident photographer at the Anantara Veli signboard at the arrival jetty.

We were brought to the reception counter, where we were served with more refreshing towels and complimentary fruit juice. The reception area itself is beautiful. It is non-aircon and very alfresco like. The benches where we sit, the ground are soft white sands. So an advise, when you come to Anantara Veli, don't bother wearing heels or dressing up. We were lucky we travelled in our berms and slippers. Confirmation of room booking were presented to us. Payment via credit card is accepted. Every single details were spot on. There will be two transactions. One will be for your room stay. Another would be for your deposit. The amount for the deposit is USD$200 per night.

Once all the paperwork is settled, a guide will lead you to your room. Along the way, he/she will brief you on what is available on the island. Places to eat, water activity centre, amenities such as gym, spa, swimming pools, gardens etc. The trail to our villa is filled with so much green on one side and on the other side, pristine clear turquoise water. Absolute beauty and gem of a place. We turned towards our overwater bungalow as we walked on the jetty. We can't stop admiring the beauty of what lies beneath us. The fishes, the corals, the water. Everything simply compliments one another.

We took the standard overwater bungalow. There are 3 types you can choose from. The standard, deluxe or the one with your own private pool. The price difference between our standard and the one with private pool is USD$1500. If you are going to simply relax and soak in the beauty of the environment around you, then the standard is good enough. Upon entering the room, you would realise how cosy it is. The wardrobe are ok size. The fridge is filled with drinks (you need to pay for those), coffee is free and they even provided a coffee machine which was fairly easy to use. The bathroom is huge. Even the bathtub you can sit two people in it. From the bathtub you can access your balcony and enjoy the view that Maldives have to offer. A small island called Moyo Island is infront of us, like 20 steps away(?) but the way there is filled with corals so you need to swim. The king size bed is simply amazing. Pillows were comfortable and the comforters feel so warm, especially at night as it tends to get slightly chilly. A 40 inch lcd tv at the corner of the room, there's a nice couch for you and your partner to saddle in. The channels are ok, but signals tends to get weak especially at night. But then again, who watches tv when you're in a place like Maldives.

Maldives is a Muslim country. So as a Muslim it was very convenient for us to find food. There are pork and alcohol on the menu but they are prepared seperately. The in-room dining menu is not bad. There's a range from western to local and asian food. Be prepared to chalk up a bill between USD$60 to USD$130 per meal for two person per meal.

On Veli, there are 3 restaurants:-

73rd Degrees: Served daily breakfast. Do take up the offer which includes breakfast. It is worth it!! Quite a wide range of western and asian cuisine. Closed for lunch. Opened for dinner on certain days only. They have a themed dinner, do check with the reception.
Dhoni Bar: Opened lunch and dinner. Serves light snacks and food like burgers. They have a swimming pool too which overlooks the Indian ocean.
Origami (Japanese Fine Cuisine): Opened for dinner only. It is a must visit if you are at Anantara. A total MUST! The Japanese food is of the finest quality. The seared salmon was so so good that we had two servings!!
Baan Hura (Thai Cuisine): Opened for lunch and dinner. A Thai restaurant which is located right at the end of Veli. Quite a distance to walk but make up for it through the damn good Thai food and magnificent view of the ocean with waves after waves crashing in.

On Dhigu, you need to take a pontoon (kinda like a small boat) to 3 restaurants:-

Fushi Cafe (breakfast and theme dinner buffet): Closed during lunch. They have a theme for dinner time. Do check with the staffs. Food range is Western, Asian and some middle eastern cuisine.
Fuddan Fusion Grill (grilled steaks and seafood): Opened for lunch and dinner.
Terrazzo (Italian Cuisine): Opened for dinner only.
Aqua (Cocktails and light snacks): Lunch and dinner

With accomodation, you are entitled a free rental of snorkling gears throughout your stay. So do get your gears at the aquafanatic centre after checking in, so you can go snorkling anytime you want. I won't blame you if you wanna go immediately, as the water is simply irresistable!!

They have a quite an array of water activities. From jet ski, to kayak, water ski and lots more. The one we tried was parasailing. 3 staffs will be with you throughout the journey. Very knowledgeable guys and very patient. It was a first for me and simply won't be a last. The view of the massive Indian Ocean is simply breathtaking!!

On a lighter side of activity, is the dolphin quest. We were brought way far out into the sea where a pod of wild bottlenose/spinner dolphines loves to play. The chances of spotting them are 50-50. But we were lucky as we spot the whole pod and they were very playful indeed. Beautiful creatures no doubt.

If you are on your honeymoon, here is something that you really gotta try. The dining by design. It is a romantic dinner set up by Anantara at your request. You can choose a location at any point on the beach and a setup of your choice. The price range for set up is between USD$100-USD$250. The costlier one would be on a private island of your own. As for the food, you have got to try their Maldivian Signature Seafood which is priced at USD$180 per person. It is a 3 course affair. The main course is to die for. Freshly caught lobster grilled to perfection is one of the seafood being served. There are other menu for the dining by design price range from USD$120 to USD$180.

Service from start to beginning is perfect. Not once that our questions were not answered. Reception is 24hrs, so you can just call them from your room if you wanna ask about any stuffs pertaining your stay there. EVERY single one of the workers who we came across, always greets us with a smile and most even remembered our names, with good morning/afternoon/night. We made friends with some of them. Mainly whom I can remember are Suith, Hamdan and Lateef.

Anantara sure knows how to make leaving difficult. We came back from dinner on our last night, and found gifts on our bed. Photo in a frame taken by them on the first day we arrived. A letter signed by the manager and also a shower gift box. We were totally in love with Anantara Veli. We will be back for sure.

Room Tip: Asked for a room without corals if you are choosing an over water bungalow

Dear Amir J,

Thank you for your detailed in-depth review followed after your recent stay with us at Anantara Veli. Your review will certainly benefit other travellers and ease the process as you have shared a lot of information.

We are all delighted to learn that you have thoroughly enjoyed the overall vacation experience. Our Anantara website is designed in such a way to easily allow our guests to make the booking in a simple few steps process. All the information and our latest visual images can been seen in the website making it more informative to our guests.

We are pleased that we managed to create a good pre-arrival experience for you. Answering all the pre-arrival emails and queries in a prompt manner is our goal as it is an important step to provide all the information that our guests requires.

Our entire airport team is pleased to receive such positive feedback on the seamless arrival experience from meet & greet at the airport to the boat ride. We do offer all our guests an indigenous arrival welcome on the island and we are delighted that you have enjoyed this unique experience.

The sumptuous breakfast buffet offers a lot of options from Asian to Western choices for our guests to choose from. The dinning by design is surely on top on the recommendation lists and is a great way to indulge in a romantic dinner or a special celebration at the beautiful beaches on the island. Our guests get to choose the dream location, decorated with lights, torches and the menu is limited only by own desires served by a private waiter.

When you are in the Maldives it is a great opportunity to experience the natural surrounding and water sports activities and here at Veli we offer a range of water sports. The parasailing experience is a great way to enjoy an aerial view of the atoll and the islands.

Once again we thank you for sharing your vacation experience in such detail and we sincerely look forward to welcome you back to Veli for your first wedding anniversary.

Warm regards from Anantara Veli, Your home away from home.

After hours and days of research to find the best suitable honeymoon spot for my wife and I. I finally decided on Anantara Veli. Every detail and experience from arrival to departure was flawless. The advantage of staying here is you are within proximity to Anantara Dhigu which gives you access to its restaurants and facilities. Veli, is perfect for couples. Its quite and serene, a lot of the times we thought we had the resort for ourselves! We had an over water bungalow and that was a decision well made and money well spent! Such a unique experience. The lagoon and water around Veli is mesmerizing. We snorkeled everyday! The Maldives itself is truly a heaven on earth and one cant go wrong by visiting this beautiful country and its people. The resort itself is very well taken care of, the food and especially the breakfast was 5 star standards. The staff genuinely never stop smiling and are always ready to assist customers. Its just how Maldivians are, very friendly, genuine and respectful. We only had breakfast as a meal plan. I am glad we only opted for that, cause this way we ate when we want and got the chance to use all restaurants on Veli and Dhigu. Some days we were not hungry and just ate at night. Food is expensive there as you have no other way outside the resorts, unless you can be smart and bring some snacks with you. It'll truly help! I can go on forever about how great this place is and how beautiful this resort is. I cant recommend this resort enough. Just dont be hesitant and BOOK assured of quality, luxury and the best memories. Make sure you snorkel and there is a lot to see. A lot of complimentary items like plenty o water in the room, apple, water and refreshing towels around the pool area as well as tanning lotion and sun protection. Upon departure the staff waved us goodbye and it was the only sad part of the trip. Best trip/vacation EVER.

Room Tip: Follow the other recommendations, over water bungalow as far as possible from the island!

This place is incredible! We loved every minute of staying here. From the moment we got on the speed boat to the moment we said goodbye. The views from every part of the island were picture postcard perfect.
All the staff were wonderful. They were very attentive and more than willing to help. The resort manager was lovely. He introduced himself to us and got to know us over our stay.
This resort has three islands. Veil, which is for couples and is where we stayed; Dhigu which is for families and Naladhu, which is a private island with 20 villas and only accessible to guests staying on that particular island. You can travel between Veli and Dhigu by free boat as often as you like. The boat ride only takes 2 minutes at most.
We stayed in an Over water Bungalow for three nights and then a Deluxe Over water Pool Bungalow for two nights. Both were incredible. The Over water Bungalows are positioned over the reef and you can step off your balcony and start snorkeling. My partner did this twice a day. I enjoyed reading on our day bed.
The Deluxe Over water Pool Bungalows are even more amazing. They have uninterrupted views of the sunset and are very private. You can step off your balcony into the water. They also come with a butler. Our butler was lovely, checked in regularly and ensured everything was perfect.
There are 4 a la carte restaurants, 2 buffet restaurants and 2 bar/light meals restaurants between the two islands. We tried all of them, except the Dhigu buffet restaurant. We absolutely loved the teppanyaki at the Japanese restaurant. The others were all very good. We read that the food was not cheap and we would agree. It is a captive audience. There are options of buffet restaurants half- board, buffet restaurants full-board, dine around half- board ($124 usd per person per day), dine around full- board ($165 usd per person per day) or pay individually for each meal. Dine around means you can eat at all the restaurants. We had reviewed the menus before we came and estimated we would spend less on paying for each meal than the dine around full-board. We were right. Lunch was usually a meal each and dinner was usually a shared entree, a main each and shared dessert. We also had a few cocktails per meal or a couple of glasses of wine. On our most expensive day, we spent roughly $110 usd per person on food and $70 usd per person on alcohol.

The menus and other activities are always "plus, plus". This means the price on the menu plus 10% service charge and 8% VAT (GST). So always add roughly 20% to the price of the bill. The prices for food and alcohol discussed above include the "plus plus"charge.

One other feature we loved about the resort was the overwater hammock. You swim out to it from Dhigu. The bartender even said he would bring us drinks if we asked. All we had to do was wave from the hammock.

Even with the food prices, we would still go back again tomorrow if we could. We would recommend this resort to anyone.

Room Tip: It really depends on your budget. Even the Over water Bungalows (cheapest) rooms have incredible vie...

I'm convinced there's no place on Earth more beautiful than the Maldives -- and the Anantara Veli has helped persuade me. The resort is absolutely gorgeous and its staff, charming and eager to please.

We arrived in Male late at night and had to wait in Anantara's airport office for the arrival of other guests. Although the wait was long (over an hour, if I remember correctly), the air conditioning, complimentary drinks, and wifi access helped pass the time in comfort. The boat ride to the resort and the check-in process all went smoothly, and we were happy to finally settle in our over-the-water bungalow. The next morning, we woke up to white sandy beaches and turquoise waters that took our breath away.

We made our way to 73 Degrees for breakfast, which quickly became our favorite meal of the day. We followed the advice of hotel staff and previous guests, and made reservations for the Thai restaurant and the seafood restaurant on Dhigu (the neighboring island, also part of the Anantara resort). Food was mediocre and overpriced, which isn't shocking, I suppose. But besides breakfast, our favorite meals were actually ones we had at the bars on Veli and Dhigu when we sampled local, Maldivian cuisine. We wondered why there wasn't more of it, why the cuisine wasn't showcased at dinner at one of the restaurants.

We spent most of our time in the Maldives scuba diving and were really impressed with the dive center. All of the guides were friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. I'd highly recommend paying them a visit, even for just a snorkel trip.

If time and money weren't an issue, I'd go back at Anantara Veli tomorrow.

Room Tip: We had room 319, which is on the smaller, quieter pier (the one that isn't home to the pontoon...

Everyone is looking for the best place for a honeymoon and after a long search , me and my wife finally decided to choose this hotel based on the reviews.
As soon as we confirmed our booking we felt that it's already a good choice as they were super helpful through the communication 1 month before our check-in.they even sent us all the restaurants menus after i asked about the places to eat there.
Upon our arrival to Male Airport we were picked up to the Anantara Lounge till our speed boat arrived.
To make it short...everything was just AMAZING . the food was great with different theme every day,the over water bungalow we had was just the way we wished for.
With the all-day running boat between the two islands it was easy and fun to enjoy the beaches and the water center on both islands.
Definitly i'll plan for another trip "as soon as i have the money"

Room Tip: Room 166 was the one we took and it was a wonderful choice "Specially for my wife wearing a vei...

My partner and I stayed at the resort between 14 to 19 May 2014. Upon arrival at Male' airport, we were ushered to the Anantara waiting area where they provided cool drinks and free wifi (best!) while we waited for everyone to assemble and for the boat to be ready. The wait was slightly long but turned out that there was a technical glitch so a new boat had to be arranged for.

The journey there from the airport took half an hour by speedboat. Check in was a breeze. There was a short tour of the area (5 minutes) where we were briefed about meal times and places to eat. Do not hesitate to ask the concierge anything you need to know.

We got into our over water villa soon after. Decor was beach resort style, pleasing, not opulent or too luxurious but very comfortable. The beaches were pure white powdery sand, clear as crystal waters and shallow too. Lots of corals surrounding the villa. Most memorable was a hammock plonked about a hundred metres from shore at Dhigu. Don't worry, the surrounding water was shallow (except for about a 20 metre stretch towards it but 'swimmable'). Selfies compulsory.

We did not do very much but instead spent the days napping on deck chairs, reading, frolicking in the pool or sea and stuffing our faces. If you are the type to get restless easily, you can opt for a tour of Male' or go for a scuba dive if you are qualified. Snorkelling equipment is free. You can also hop on a pontoon which will bring you to a sister resort (Dhigu) to check out the beaches and facilities there. .

Although expensive, the food was very good. I took the full board package which was pricey but we were entitled to 3 courses per meal and more than made up for what we paid. Portions were fair and quality was excellent. Do try the nouveau Japanese dinner at Origami and dine at Baan Hura too. The starter of condiments (ginger, dried shrimp, onions, chillies, nuts etc) self wrapped in betel leaf was superb. Service was excellent everywhere and staff speak very good English.

All in all, this was one of my most memorable holidays and I am soooo wanting to get back to the Maldives again. Now where is that piggy bank....
