“A truly great place for a romantic getaway, or just a getaway, full stop.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2012

This is the stuff that dreams are made on. Sundowners as a scarlet disc sinks beneath mountains of purple clouds into a silvery sea. Glance over the railing of your deck built above the aquamarine lagoon and watch the fishes dance, the rays glide by, the baby sharks wriggle across the corals and the sandy floor. The evening breeze brings relief from another white hot day. Sand and sea and coconut trees are all there is in Maldives, but Anantara has built a luxurious refuge in the middle of nowhere to help you remember what it is to be free.

It’s a long trip, and the price is high, but it’s worth it.

“Remote” hardly begins to conjure the other-worldly experience of this luxury resort. Facilities show endless attention to detail, staff are consistently friendly and helpful, the atmosphere is always relaxed and warm, and people open up and talk to each other. It feels very far away from the troubles of the modern world.

The Thai restaurant, Baan Huraa, is world class. Get a seat at the railing where you can enjoy the sounds of the sea washing into the tidepools that surround the restaurant and watch the fishes at play while you wine and dine by the light of the moon.

Geckos sushi is quite good, but for a fun-filled hour or so, ask for a wine tasting. We had a great time with two Indian sommeliers discussing and tasting wines from around the world, and nibbling some excellent cheeses.

The Dhoni bar is a nice place to cool off at lunchtime, watch the waves break on the reef, and enjoy very good food and service. They offer some interesting and refreshing drinks, too.

Diving was interesting, but is not the focus of Veli. A night dive on the wreck at Kuda Giri can be pretty exciting. Thirty meters down is a long way down in the dark! A napoleon that must have weighed over 100 kilos was asleep inside the ship’s cabin. Drift dives are common, with all the complex currents flowing among the atolls. Our best dive was a drift at 15 meters. Some of the dive masters want to take you deep to look for sharks, but there is more life where there is more light higher up. Be aware that currents can be so strong that you find yourself crawling by clinging fingertips across the reef, like a climber scaling a big wall. Boat time is always special when diving, and particularly so in Maldives. The spinner dolphins inside the atoll are endlessly entertaining. It’s hard to tell who is entertaining whom.

The spa at Dhigu, built like the cabanas, out over the water, is charming. Massage tables are set above a window in the floor so that you can watch the fishes as you fall asleep under the skillful fingers of the Thai masseuse. A romantic floral sunset bath is a sensational experience.

One of the highlights of our trip was snorkeling in the lagoon just off our deck. It is like living above an aquarium. I counted 37 different species of fishes in one hour snorkeling there. It is endlessly amusing just to look over the railing now and then whenever you are in the room.

Rooms are spacious and very comfortable and well appointed. Airco works well, water pressure is great, and the bathroom, behind a screen, overlooks the lagoon.

A truly great place for a romantic getaway, or just a getaway, full stop.

Brief Truth in Advertising Note: You will not escape families with children on Veli, but there are relatively few of them on the beach and around the pool. Anantara Dhigu, the “family resort” island, is only a few minutes away by pontoon boat, which plies steadily back and forth all day, so you have easy access to both islands, and so do they.

Room Tip: Get a room over the water, it's one of the best things about the place. Deluxe rooms don't...

We had our honeymoon here on a beautiful deluxe over the water bungalow and had a great time.
Food was expensive clearly being in a resort as such, but we would not recommend taking a full board because you'd be stuck eating at the same restaurants. There were quite a few choices of restaurants here and they were quite delicious.
It was also very easy for us to request halal food.
Also the hotel planned activities are not ran everyday, so its good to either call ahead to plan, or book the activities first thing.
'Latiff' surprised us one night by decorating our bedroom for us 'honeymoon' style.
The spa was also awesome! Expensive... but really great...
All in all a fantasticccc experience :)

We spent 5 days in Anatara Veli in November 2009 and it is by far the best place I've ever been. There is no place like Maldives. The amazing green ocean, perfectly white sand beaches and a peaceful silence that remindes you that Heaven exists. We had a full board meal that allowed us to eat in any restaurant of Veli or Dhigu, a Anantara resort that you go by boat from Veli. Both hotels look alike I didn't see any difference between them.
The breakfast was so delicious and was in a sand floor restaurant in the middle of the island.
The food is great specially in the Thai restaurant, a beautiful open spot in the middle of the ocean.
It was included the snorkelling and kayaking
The weather wasn't good but it really didn't matter. This place is AMAZING!!!
We stayed in the overwater bungallow. A big room with a oceanview jaccuzzi with an deck access to the ocean. Simply the best.
Very nice service.
Very romantic.
I highly recommended to go to Maldives. We took the best pictures ever.
.

Room Tip: Take the bungallows in the end of hallway with no neigboors.

We spent 6 days in Anantara Veli in February and it was one of the most restful holidays we ever had. We had a full board meal plan which allowed us to eat in any of the restaurants in Veli as well the sister resort in Dhigu, which can be accessed in 2 minutes by the shuttle boat which runs between the 2 islands every 5 minutes. In retrospect, half board would probably been enough for us. The food was fantastic in all the restaurants, loved the Japanese, Italian, fusion and Thai ones most. We loved the white breasted water hens which run in and out of the restaurants.

The snorkelling was fabulous beneath the bungalows but especially so in the area between the 2 rows of over-water bungalows. Lots and lots of reef fishes! Beware of the few Titan triggerfish which patrol that area though, as they are quite territorial and come at you quite menacingly with their teeth, giving us quite a scare. They even chase you! It will be a good idea if the hotel has a more in depth talk and other information on the reef fishes and perhaps warn the tourists, especially those with children, about any potential dangers. A picture card of the common Maldivian reef fishes in the rooms will be helpful and educational.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. There were many interns and international staff there. Our praises to the staff at the Japanese restaurant who always made us feel welcome. We tried both spas at Veli and Dhigu. The Dhigu spa was in a over water bungalow with a view of the water below, which made for a unique experience.

There was no Wi-fi in the bedrooms and one has to go to the reception and restaurants for internet, which can be unpredictable. But I guess that ensured we weren't always checking our emails on holiday.

We will love to come back again, this time with our children, to this lovely resort. Keep up the standard!

This is a beautiful resort.
We stayed in a deluxe overwater bungalow which was huge - and very lovely.
The snorkelling around and under the bungalow was perfect - we stayed here after doing a 7 day Live aboard Dive Boat - or Dive safari as the european community call it , the MV Orion - which was awesome.
Having just completed 16 -17 dives we only wanted to do snorkelling so did not use the dive centre - but did go to the dive centre and the staff were very willing to help with any inquieries.

The deluxe bungalow:

absolutely beautiful - the shower and WC both overlook the water internally - which was a nice touch , the shampoo and conditioner - and soap were very high quality.
Towels and linen in general perfect.
the bed was comfortable and there is more than enough room to relax and have baggage stored - clothes put away etc.
The main difference between the deluxe and the standard overwater bungalows seem to be:
The size
A giant bathtub in the delux that overlooks the water - gourgeous.
Another lower balcony
The coffee machine

The two drawbacks to the room
- a terrible hairdryer ( for a room of this standing -it should be a powerful and good quality hairdryer )
and as always in virtually every hotel - poor lighting for putting on make up , it has a lovely little area to sit - with a mirror in the dressing area but any woman would look at the lighting and sigh " here we go again - make up application in the dark"

The Staff.

The check in staff went out of there way to make us comfortable when we arrived - we arrived at the resort around 10 or 11
( the transfer by speedboat was very comfortable and of a high quality )
our room would be ready at around 1400 - check in staff , let us into the gym to shower and during check in - explanied about the spa , resturants etc - we booked a few resturants and asked if the spa would be able to fit us in for a massage - they arranged this straight away so while waiting to check in we had a couples massage - which was extremely good.
After the massage we went back to the reception who organised coffee , after a little while , he again came back to see if we wished to upgrade to the deluxe bungalow which we did - and got into the room straight away, this was about 1300 hrs.
they also arranged a late checkout of 1800 as we werent flying out until 2200 on our checkout night at no extra cost - which was a lovely touch.

All the other staff we came across from gardeners through to the Spa and resturant staff were freindly and helpful.

Food:
Breakfast was plentiful and of high quality.
the resturants are on the pricey side - but it is a 5 star resort so that is to be expected.
The Thai was awesome.
We had a special dinner on valentines overlooking the water - Lobster dinner which was very good.

I would definetely stay here again, the island felt like it was secluded and private yet it was clearly quite full.

The snorkelling around the bungalows was a highlight for us - we spotted two small sharks and two Rays whilst snorkelling - as well as plently of lion fish and other interesting fish to watch.
perfect for a honeymoon - romantic getaway.

this was my first time to go to Maldives. I spend so many times to fine the best resort to stay. Anantara was selected because i wanted to had experience with water villa in Maldives with value of money. This resort was given me the excellent services and room beyond i expected. This resort is medium number of rooms, nice for couple, great surrounding with reef and colourful fishes that you can see from water villa.
Location is fine, i enjoyed to walk around the beach nearby with 2 Resort of Anantara. i also like to snokling to see underwater surrounding around my villa. In the evening, Welome alcohol drinks party is for free and wonderful enjoy relaxing at the pool. Free thai massage was service there. Three different resturants is located around Anantaras resorts.
Dinner in Veli in resturant is simple, nothing special. (this is a bit disappointed me)
However, this is my wonderful trip in my memory and nothing to say just "Paradise on Earth". I had a beautiful time to listening to wave whishper, talking to the fish, lazy sitting on the beach, smiling with beautiful sunset, laying down under the moon light and say good night with paradise on earth :)
