Our first time visiting KeyLime Cove Resort in Gurnee, IL. Every single person in our party of 10 adults and 3 kids had a BLAST!!! We looked for the perfect place to celebrate our adult quadriplegic son's birthday. Water is the one place where he has physical freedom from straps and supports of his wheelchair and is given buoyancy (of a flotation device specifically made for para/quadriplegics).
The zero entry wave pool was perfect for us to transfer Tony out of his wheelchair into the pool. Once in the pool the waves gently bobbed and flowed us into the lazy river. We floated down the lazy river umpteen times before returning to the wave pool. Life guards are plentifully stationed all around the waterpark and keep a sharp eye out for all guest safety as well as reminding rambunctious ones to be considerate of others and mindful of their own safety.
We were guests during off season so the waterpark wasn't overly crowded. There were 4 tunnel waterslides and a vortex slide. All of our big people had a blast trying out all the slides... the vortex was fun but everyone pretty much agreed they preferred the tunnel water slides.
There is a really great kids water area that is gated to keep it separate from the rest of the waterpark. Our 18 month old and 5 year old enjoyed the park very much. But our 5 year old really had the best time in the wave pool and lazy river.
The food court is right outside of the waterpark to order pizza, burgers, hot dogs, sub sandwiches and salads. You can take it in the waterpark to eat poolside so your group can feel free to jump out of the pool for their pizza and soda at their leisure rather than trying to round everyone up for a meal at one time. There is a sit down restaurant at the far end of the arcade if you'd rather pull everyone from the water and have a meal together... good luck with that, it may take you 2 hours to round everyone up! There was a slip up on getting our pizza order put in so they tried to compensate for the error by offering us free ice cream. We ended up not taking them up on the ice cream just because we didn't find time for it. I feel it was fair that they acknowledge the error and made a good attempt to compensate us for it in apology. They serve a buffet breakfast for under $14 per adult and I can't remember the price on kids. The food was good, as was the variety, although there was no standout on the buffet fare. The service was very good considering they were trying to keep up with our group of 13! There is also a full bar upstairs overlooking the waterpark. Aside from beer, wine and cocktails, they serve a big fishbowl size goblet of margarita (and you get to keep the goblet as your souvenier. Several of our group had goblets to take home :-)
The arcade is AMAZING!! Actually, we equated it to Las Vegas... but for kids! I think it stays open 24 hours. On our way to breakfast we noticed a mom and pre-teen daughter sitting at a table with reels and reels of tickets from the arcade games.... it really looked like they had stayed up overnight in the arcade.
We didn't check out the Spa and cannot comment on it... but just to let you know it is there for mani/pedi's, massages, body treatments and facials if you'd like to get away from the hot spot of activities.
There are also activity centers with planned arts and crafts scheduled for kids. Check with the front desk for information on what's scheduled during your stay.
The rooms: We had a King Room w/jacuzzi, a King Room, a Qn/Qn ADA accessible room and a 2 BR suite. I can comment on the 2 BR suite from a first person POV. The rooms were large and the LR/kitchenette was spacious (mini fridge, wet sink, coffeemaker and microwave). Beds were comfy and had lots of pillows. Bathrooms were large, clean with plenty of towels. Free WIFI throughout the resort, very cool as we were stacked with multi laptops, ipads and Itouch gadgets. ONLY ONE TINY DISAPPOINTMENT during our stay... no pay per view movies in room! We had planned to have a movie night after the pool closed only to find they didn't have a premium movie channel or movie ordering site available, so we made popcorn and watched basic cable shows.
The staff at EVERY juncture of our stay was OUTSTANDING!!! From the Front Desk check in agents, Jim (bellman) taking our massive # of bags to our rooms, Ivette (Crazy Toucan lounge) Helen (waitress at DW Andersons restaurant), the waterpark staff (towel desk & lifeguards), retail clerks. It seemed comparable to staff at WDW in the level of training for guest interaction. Pretty impressive for a waterpark/resort, in my opinion.
OH!! and although we had no reason to utilize the shuttle service... KLC does have a complimentary shuttle to Great America Theme Park (it was past season during our stay) or to the very close Gurnee Mills Outlet shopping center.
I think I covered primary points of our stay. I hope you have the same kind of experience we did at KeyLime Cove. We most certainly will return to KeyLime Cove for family fun outings.
It's true, there are alot of high energy guests staying at KeyLime Cove. And they do run ALOT...

Wow! What a splash-tastic review! Thank you for sharing your wonderful comments. We are absolutely thrilled to hear how much fun you and your family had staying with us. We are honored that you chose our resort to celebrate Tony’s birthday. Our waterpark has many activities for our guests to choose from and it seems like your family had a splash-tastic time experiencing all of them! The arcade has many games for all ages but you’re right that the kids especially love it. However, the arcade does not stay open 24 hours but you’re right that the schedule, for all of our outlets, is given to our guests right at check-in with the times listed. Our number one priority is our customer service in making our guests feel welcomed from the time they enter our resort to the time they leave. We take great pride in our resort and always strive to exceed expectations. Again, we are so thankful for your wonderful comments. Looking forward to seeing you and your family again soon!
