Owner description: No-one ever forgets their first sight of Blickling, with its imposing turreted red brick mansion and gorgeous designed garden beyond. But this Norfolk beauty sits nestled within one of the largest, most complete country estates, where little has changed. An assortment of farms, barns and cottages all add to the landscape's rural charm and country way of life.Widely accepted as the birthplace of Anne Boleyn, Blickling has been the backdrop for political intrigue and home to a duelling baronet, kings’ mistresses and squadrons of airmen. Many have come and gone, but Blickling remains at the heart of the local community. To this day, descendants of the same farming families continue to live and work on the Estate, as they have done for generations.

“Wonderful day out but too busy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2013

When in North Norfolk, don't miss Blickling Hall. A wonderful house with much to see but to be avoided at Christmas opening. It was just too busy and at times potentially dangerous with visitors backing up onto the very steep back staircase because the room in front had been given over to a short period of dancing. As a result of the large number of visitors the catering facilities did seem a bit overstretched and there were so many cars trying to park that neighbouring fields were being used for car parking followed by a very long walk to the house. As a NT member I will return regularly because there is so much more I want to see but it will not be at Christmas.

Many thanks for your helpful comments. The bit about having to queue on a steep staircase is certainly not pleasant, and something we will think about before next year, timed tickets to the house perhaps. I think you must have visited on the busiest weekend of the year. Car parking and catering are a challenge when there are so many people, but we obviously don’t want to turn anyone away. We look forward to welcoming you back at a quieter time of year!

“A very lovely experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2013

In spite of the bad weather - just after the bad storms of December. The hall was dressed magnificently and all the staff we met were friendly and informative. We particularily enjoyed the Reindeer and the lights in the front garden area, spectacular sunset to top it off!

“Excellent day out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2013

Blickling Hall is a well preserved Jacobean stately home in North Norfolk, with very pleasant gardens to walk around and a nice cafe. We spent almost entire day on the estate and the autumn flowers as well as the views of the house were a joy for still photography. It is not well connected by public transport (nothing - no train station or even a bus stop - within a mile and half), which is the only reason I have taken off one star.

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your visit here and found some good subjects for photos. It is indeed a pity that you can’t get here by public transport. There used to be a bus service, but sadly it wasn't supported enough to be a success. Getting here by bike is an option along the Marriotts Way or Weaver's Way.

“must see”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

In the Hall the staff and volunteer workers are very helpful and knowledgeable there is a lot to see, and it is a great history lesson.
There are two cafes one outside which is very pleasant in the sommer time, and can sit and have your tea & cake with your dog. Dogs can be walked in some areas around the buildings. Above the in door cafe there is a long craft shop, with many different hand made items.Which are individual and quite reasonable and make lovely gifts. The cafes craft rooms and walks are free of charge to enter.
There is an old worldy pub nearby the car park, which is cosy and quaint.

Many thanks for your comments, which we will pass on to our volunteers; they are always pleased when their enthusiasm is appreciated! Summer now seems a long time ago, but we look forward to welcoming visitors again when the spring flowers start to emerge.

“A fun day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

This is our second trip to Blickling Estate and we enjoyed it just as much. Just be aware that the Car Park signage is not clear, don't go down the turning where there is a big blue sign in the grass, but travel further on and the entrance is on the right. Lots of people were turning in, like us, to the staff parking area. Also note, that the car park is pay and display and is £2.50 all day, so have some change ready! (if you are Trust members then I think the parking is free)

If you are going take advantage of the beautiful walks. We walked around the lake, it was very peaceful and we very much loved watching the cows munching grass in the field, quite wonderful. A very small window of natural beauty. The house is grand as ever and we spotted lots of things we missed before. The guides in each room are very friendly and enjoy telling you about the house and it's history as well as informing you of some of the different objects on show.

I was so excited to see a 'Stamp Shop' (Yes, I am into philately!). I purchased some fantastic specimens. This is a voluntary run shop and the proceeds will go to support the development of the walled garden.

We had a cuppa and cake in the café which was very tasty.

We recommend Blickling Estate for a fun day out and we will definitely go back again.

Thanks very much for your feedback. The carpark is free to National Trust members, and in fact non-members can take the ticket to the restaurant or shop and redeem the charge against a purchase. The stamp shop is a new venture, but doing extremely well, and we're glad it appealed to you. Keep coming back, there's always something different to see!
