Foolishly we have sometimes tried other brands of Italian beef sandwiches, only to be reminded that Portillo's is the way to go. Friends who have moved out of the area beg for the beef to be shipped out of state (which Portillo's does btw). It is a must try for meat eaters visiting Chicago or the suburbs. The Portillo's family started the restaurant eons ago in the Chicag suburbs, so it is a local success story. We usually share a big beef, wet (extra gravy), with cheddar cheese added. The hotdogs, tuna, chopeed salad, and burger are also pretty darn good. The french fries are perfection- cripsy on the outside and flaky on the inside. Add the cheese sauce to those to and you will be in heaven.
