First I'll say that our steaks were fine. They arrived medium instead of medium rare, but they weren't too over-cooked and tasted OK. Nothing special, but you don't expect much with choice beef, and my son and I enjoyed our ribeyes and my other son enjoyed his filet. The prices for the steaks seemed fair enough.
Also, the man who greeted us and showed us to our table was very friendly and warm, and the restaurant itself looks great inside, with the same cool packinghouse rafters and elevator from its days as a meat factory. Service was relatively quick.
But other parts of our experience make this place hard to recommend. My wife isn't a steak eater, and the chicken dish she ordered arrived lukewarm. My wife and I ordered the salad bar option with our dinners, which I believe was $4.95 each, and it was a rip-off. The dinner salads my sons got for free with their meals were basically the same salads we got for $4.95 at the salad bar. Choices at the salad bar were extremely limited - not much there that I'd want to put on a salad. Not worth it at all. And when we mentioned this, there was no attempt made by the waitstaff to address our complaint.
Dessert (we ordered the chocolate cake) was a joke. It looked, as one of my sons said, like it was made in a Betty Crocker "Easy Bake" kids oven, and tasted that way as well. Obviously from a mix, complete with canned frosting and little sprinkles on top. Dry, too. I had a bite and then decided not to waste the calories.
I wish there was a way to give this 2.5 stars instead of 2 or 3. I don't want to imply it's a total disaster, but I think 3 stars implies that it's better than it is. I'm giving it 3 because it's under new management and I want to encourage them to continue making improvements. I used to go here 20 years ago when I was in college in town, and have fond memories. I'd love to see this place survive, and I salute management for giving it a go.
