“Wonderful Weekend at Cloran Mansion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2011

What a wonderful, restful, memorable weekend at the Cloran Mansion B&B with hosts Cheryl and Carmine! With the B&B beautifully decked out for the winter holidays, and a warm glowing fireplace in our Sara's Suite, we immediately felt at home -- a very lovingly maintained home. The innkeepers' breakfast hospitality included delicious Danish aebleskiver pancakes, sphere-shaped doughy goodness that resembled a light, fluffy popover. Our country breakfasts each morning, along with the B&B's many other amenities, made for a very pleasant, fun weekend. Cloran Mansion and Galena's distinctive setting -- its surrounding hills, limestone cliffs and river valley; its historic legacy; its vintage storefronts, restaurants, galleries, shopping, and golf and skiing -- are a perfect fit!

Since discovering Galena two years ago, we've stayed five times. Three of those five were at the Cloran Mansion, our favorite B&B in Galena. Carmine makes the best breakfast and he and Cheryl make for great company. My fiancee was having dreams about the wonderful potatoes that Carmine makes so last Saturday we booked a room on just a couple hours notice. We were not disappointed and weren't hungry again until two in the afternoon.

My husband and I just visited for 3 nights (Tower suite and Alice's room) and had a wonderful time. The house was so clean and had lots of space and we felt like we were just at a home away from home. We were just a 2 minute drive to downtown Galena. I recommenced it!

Room Tip: The Tower room was worth the money!

Me and my husband just returned from our stay at The Cloran. We have stayed at several BnB's in Galena and the Cloran is one of the best. We stayed in the tower suite, which was amazing. The room was beautifully decorated. We had a a fireplace and jacuzzi which made for a romantic weekend. The fridge in our room was stocked with water and soda also.

Carmine and Cheryl are wonderful hosts! We enjoyed talking to them at breakfast....speaking of breakfast, they serve the best breakfast in Galena! Carmine's potatoes are to die for. Everything was fresh and ohhhh so yummy! We ate so much at breakfast, we didn't eat again till dinner time.

I highly recommend staying here, you will have no regrets. Carmine and Cheryl having an amazing BnB and they will exceed all your expectations. We look forward to coming back!

Thank you Carmine and Cheryl for giving me and my husband a wonderful and romantic weekend. We look forward to returning.

My hubby and me spent two wonderful nights in "The Towers. Beautiful, romantic, cozy room with a delightful two person whirlpool in the tower of the room...very private very cozy.

The whole experience was like being home away from home as Carmine and Cheryl make you feel so welcomed and that their home is your home. All the extra touches like the oreo cookies, home baked cookies, m&m's that welcome you back from a packed day, just the right touch after a dinner out. Stocked refirigerator in your room with pop and water, comfy king size bed, soft terry cloth robes to wrap up in and beautiful fireplace to cozy up the room.

This Bed and Breakfast offers you everything you need to just come and relax....a library of videos and CD's for your use and the coffee is always on and the breakfasts are just right. The pumpkin pancakes are delicious.

We felt pampered and will be coming back for another weekend getaway in the future.

This was our second stay with Carmine and Cheryl at the Cloran Mansion in Galena and we hope to repeat the experience again in future years. It is obvious that they really love what they do and take every opportunity to make their guests feel like they are at home during their stay. The breakfast and the dining room ambience were exceptional. Last year we stayed 2 nights in John's Room, so we wanted to change things up a little this year and opted for one week night in Antonio's Cottage which is adjacent to the Mansion and then spent the following night at the "Cloran Condo" out at Longhollow Point (Near Eagle Ridge). We loved them both for different reasons which I will attempt to highlight below.

The cottage is very spacious and has a nice (sleeper) sofa and is also equipped with a small kitchen as well. It has windows on all sides that come with blinds that can be closed at night time to offer privacy. It has a gorgeous three-sided glass gas-log fireplace and a large two-person whirlpool that is adjacent to the queen size black wrought iron bed. It also has heated floors which came in very handy on a cold November night! The cottage is a short 50' walk across the driveway to the front door of the mansion for breakfast in the morning where you can share breakfast conversation with the other guests. The cottage had a small stocked (water and soda) refrigerator, coffee pot, microwave, and a few essential dishes and utensils. We loved the space and the privacy that it afforded us.

So that you understand this review on the condo, I need to explain that it is not on the property at the Cloran Mansion. It is about a 10-15 minute drive due east near Eagle Ridge out in the Galena Territory. It is definitely NOT a traditional B&B and is essentially a studio timeshare in a fairly new Wyndam resort building. It offers a large bedroom with a large flat screen TV/DVD and a king size bed with a spacious bathroom that has a shower and a large jacuzzi tub. Our favorite feature was the glass two-way gas-log fireplace that offered a romantic view of the fire from either side! The bathroom even came equipped with a small flat screen TV and DVD player mounted above the whirlpool. The kitchenette is small, but offers the necessary basics for a romantic getaway. (Note: Unlike the Cottage and the bedrooms in the mansion, due to the distance, the Condo refrigerator wasn't stocked with complimentary soda and water.) There were several dishes with various hard candies (nice touch), but we missed the M&Ms and oreo cookies that we grew fond of during our time at the mansion. In our opinion, the major advantage of the condo is the fitness center, large indoor swimming pool, hot tub, and sauna that was open from 8-10 daily. (Adults only in the pool for the first and last hours of operation daily.) We absolutely loved the Condo and expect to return there. That said, to provide an honest and balanced perspective here, the only 3 constructive comments we can offer in comparing the Cloran Condo to the Mansion are: 1) It is fairly close to US Route 20, so we could hear truck traffic istarting around 7AM, 2) we missed the soft oversized terrycloth robes provided to the guests at the mansion, and 3) we had to drive 10-15 minutes in the morning to get that incredible breakfast feast!

In case it is not obvious, we really love the Cloran Mansion and believe that Carmine and Cheryl are wonderful hosts who go out of their way to provide memorable experiences for their guests while they are visiting Galena.
