“Super Place to stay!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2009

My ex husband and I went to get remarried at The Irish Cottage and I have to say, not only was our stay wonderful, the staff, the hotel, the atmospere was top notch! The officiate that married us, Basil, was so great and made our marriage one to remember!! I cannot express enough thanks to everyone there for such a wonderful time! Not only did we feel welcome, we felt like part of an extended family!!! Everyone went well above anything we ever expected and we plan on visiting quite often to visit with the staff, new friends made and our new extended family!!

Galena always makes a nice getway. The Irish Cottage is a nice addition. We spent 2 nights for our 10th anniversary. The food is great and authentic (the best fish and chips...and yes malt vinegar). The interior sets the tone, and it is a fabulous pub. The entertainment was fun, the dancers were a nice change from the ordinary, and the music each night was great. Folksy, funny with the occasional 'sing-along' .
The breakfast was wonderful. I skipped the blood sausage because I don't care for it, but it was a real irish breakfast. There were also scones, muffins, cold cereal and fruit..We didn't need lunch, so that saved the cost of another meal.
Make sure you get a Tarot card reading in the lobby!! Very interesting. The little shop has British products we normally can't buy here (Bounty, Crunchie, HP sauce). If you like these things, take a trip to Dubuque and go to the Yorkshire Rose (352 Bluff St)
The hotel rooms were nothing fancy, just plain 'holiday inn' style rooms. We didn't spend much time in the room, but I admit for the price it was a bit disappointing.
We also spent a day golfing. We passed up the fancy courses and chose the Galena Golf Club. The course is challenging and well maintained. A good round for the price compared to the more expensive clubs in the area.

Wow! The place is absolutely stunning with each room, lobby, pub with dual snugs, entrance and library area tastefully decorated with an Irish flare. My girlfriend and I visited Galena for a weekday getaway during the hotels and were really glad to book this hotel and quite frankly, it was the only nightlife around as most of the town closes around 5pm for shops and 9pm for restaurants. The food at Frank 'O Dowd's was great along with exceptional hospitality by the front desk staff and waitress'. We also met one of the owners who was working diligently and blended himself with his staff and who also gave us wonderful pointers for our next trip to Dublin, Ireland. Due to lack of funding from the state and the winter season, many attractions like the Ulysses Grant Home (open for fewer hours), Downey House, Belvedere house, Trolley Tours, Cave tours in Dubuque were closed. Overall, the hotel made our stay. This is by far the best hotel in Galena and we would recommend everyone visit the pub and establishment if they are unable to stay the facility. Also, the live performer, Paul McHugh, was a real treat!

We were so pleased with the accomodations provided at the Irish Cottage Boutique Hotel. After reviewing several places to stay in Galena we thought the idea of an Irish Cottage sounded very romantic. When we first arrived, we were greeted by very friendly staff. Our suite was spacious and so very comfortable. We had a separate bedroom with a king-size bed and the main part of the suite had a fireplace, jacuzzi, comfortable sofa and chair. We also had a small refrigerator, microwave and sink. The pub was a great place to relax. We stopped by the pub numerous times during our stay. The hot breakfast that came with the room was excellent. The pub also had night-time entertainment, which was enjoyable.

We were very pleasantly surprised at how quiet the suite was. This is extremely important to us and we slept so well. The bed was comfortable as were the pillows. When I usually stay in a hotel I am not able to sleep well the first night, but that was not the case here - we slept like babies each night of our stay.

We have recommended this hotel to many of our friends and family and we look forward to coming back for another great getaway.

The local Chamber of Commerce representative showed us a variety of places to stay in Galena. Based on amenities, she called the hotel for us and we talked to their desk person for information and rates. For the money, we thought the stay was a bargain. A nicely furnished room, high speed internet, thick towels and a very quiet location were the first indicators. That night, we enjoyed a tasty Irish dinner in the Irish Pub downstairs, followed by Irish step dancers, an Irish singer and a wonderful assortment of Irish draft ales as well as domestic and imported beers. Mixed drinks were also available. (No cover charges for the entertainment and the menu was reasonably priced) The pub wasn't too loud like a lot of entertainment rooms, the staff waited on us hand and foot and we just generally had a blast. When we were confused about the taste of the different ales, the server offered a small "tasters" for us to try. After a good night's sleep, we had a very nice breakfast downstairs. Check in/check out was quick and friendly. We'll stay there again and we highly recommend it to other travelers. We'd like to rate it a 10. Excellent!

From the moment we stepped through the doors, we knew this was going to be a grand experience. The decorating is very warm and inviting; especially the library. We could hear the music from the pub and the strong beat of clogging shoes on the wood floor. We hurried to our room so we could have dinner and enjoy the entertainment. The food was very comforting and reasonably priced. The service was good and the drinks were fabulous. (Pumpkin Pie Martini). Neither my husband or I are Irish, but we felt we could be for the weekend. Our room was well appointed and the shower was awesome! The Hotel is located very close to town so it was just a few minutes to historic attractions and shopping. All in all, it was a "Sweetest Day Weekend" to remember.

When we checked in, we were informed that our room had been upgraded at no extra cost. Wow was it ever. We were in the top suite of the hotel (Brian Braer) It had everything a person could have thought of. We didn't want to leave.
This was my second time staying here and not my last. Thank you for the fantastic night in Galena.

  • Liked — The room was better than anything I had ever stayed in! The spa was great also.
