First the basics. My wife and I went to Galena, IL for a weekend getaway. A chain hotel was out of the question and we wanted the hotel relatively close to the downtown area. Our price range was under $175/night. We selected the Irish Cottage Hotel.
The reception area is charming and leads to a small sitting room that has comfortable leather chairs and a view to the back valley. Adjacent to this room was another room that had more couches and chairs and was available to be rented out for a special function. Both rooms were very nice and my wife used them while having morning coffee while reading the newspaper.
The room itself was very good. The functional part of the bathroom was separated from the sink/mirror area; that reduces the "get ready" time before going out. The king bed was comfortable. It did have a small refrigerator, but we did not utilize it. The water pressure in the shower was very good and the height of the water nozzle was over 6' (should never be less!).
The Frank O'Dowd pub just called out for you to imbibe in a drink or two. A good interior and a welcoming staff. The free breakfast the next day in the pub was ok, as they bring you a plate and you get what they deliver. We loved the crepes, found the portion of scrambled eggs pretty dry, and the small scoop of potatoes was sufficient. I personally like options and the breakfast didn't deliver options.
Negatives? For a hotel that bills itself as an Irish "boutique" hotel, the room decor was straight out of the Holiday Inn. The rest of the hotel screams, "Irish", but the rooms have decorating that is purely American. The ballyhooed view out the back valley is a disappointment because the parking lot is the first thing you see. While the hotel is only one mile from town, no sidewalk exists to walk it so one has to drive and park. That's not much of an issue, but my wife and I had planned on walking more.
To recap, The Irish Cottage and the Hotel DeSoto are the two top options and I don't think you can do wrong either way. The DeSoto is right on the main drag, so that is either the big positive to swing you that way or a negative to make you seek something a bit further out. However, both are great choices. Many of the B&B's are not as convenient, in my estimation.
