Owner description: This Italianate-style brick house, with original furnishings, looks very much as it did in 1865 when a group of townspeople presented it as a gift to Ulysses S. Grant on his victorious return from the Civil War.

“Great bit of history!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

Knowledgeable tour guide, interesting spot. I am so imressed with how the state and city has captured so much of Galenas history. Great view of the city from from the hill where the house and grounds sit.

“worth the experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

Just returned yesterday from Galena and were very happy to see Pres. Grant's home. The tour guide was very informative and interesting, and eager to answer any questions. The home was lovely and many of the furnishings were authentic. Liked the statue of Mrs. Julia Grant that was further out in the yard. She was a lovely lady and well liked by all. They had four children, one girl and three boys and they all had their own room. Be careful of the very narrow and steep winding staircase.

Very interesting artifacts , furniture and historic paintings. The tour guide was very informative. The pewter belt buckles on sale were cool.

“Interesting, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

Everybody should go to say they did, if visiting Galena. For this type of attraction, I prefer The amazing Belvedere (think Liberace & Gone with the Wind!). Also, the Dowling House is so incredibly authentic.
