“What a visual hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

Spotless room. Good breakfast with seconds. We had a great time looking at the Christmas ornaments and the many clocks! Susan and Bob do a great job on the newly acquired B&B. It is close to the main street of Galena. Go see the Galena Canning Corporation w all the tastings!

Room Tip: the Jessica room is a spacious queen.

We stayed at the Farmer's Guest House a week ago and had a wonderful time. Everything about the trip was better than We had imagined. Don and Susan are amazing hosts who make you feel just like family the minute you walk in the door. The rooms are very cozy and the fireplace in the room we stayed in really warmed us up quickly. Breakfast in the morning was delicious! We left the table feeling full and ready for a day of shopping both mornings. I would highly recommend staying at the FGH if you are going to be visiting Galena. It will really add to your trip.

My husband surprised me with this little getaway for Christmas and he made an excellent choice! We just came home this evening from a wonderful trip to Galena and stayed at this great B & B. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and Susan and Don were wonderful hosts who both greeted us upon our arrival. We checked in a little early which was nice and Don gave us a tour around this historical guest house and showed us where everything is located, including the library area which had an ample supply of books and a cozy little room to read in, a sitting room with a huge tv, a huge selection of dvd's (which we took advantage of later in the evening), and the ice, microwave, water, etc... Why people want to stay in hotels is beyond me when you can have a real home with all of the amenities that go along with it! They were great hosts! They gave us ideas of where to eat, how to walk to town from the b&b, and things to do while we were there. We enjoyed the wine & cheese and morning breakfast. The amount of food was more than enough and it was all homemade and very tasty! We enjoyed talking to Charley and his knowledge of the area was very helpful. After spending a day walking around town it was nice to come back to a room with a fireplace. It really made the room feel very warm and cozy! We will definitely stay here again!

We have stayed at the FGH many times over the last 9 yrs or so. The transition to Susan and Don is about as seemless as could be. They are very accomodating and perfect for their role as B and B hosts. Most everything is about the same as before they took over in March, Reading the several reveiws we expected an upgrade in the food, but were a bit dissapointed in that one area. We like plated breakfasts in general but for a guest house with this many rooms we wonder it the former buffet would be more appropriate. I am a big eater and found the amout of food for me to be inadequate. I was asked if I wanted meat with my breakfast, and that has never happened at a B and B before. It has alwasys been our experience that the food is just served and not asked it you wanted it (meat), We were surprised that the meat consisted of only one sausage and then next day 1 1/2 pieces of very thin bacon. We know that pork prices have gone up but we would rather pay say $5 more and get an adequate helping , The quality of the food was fairly good, but, again just too little of it. We hope they upgrade this since it is about the only flaw we found. Charles is a huge asset to the FGH and we are so glad that he stayed on and the innkeepers have really taken an interest in his well being. He is very interesting and a fount of knowledge about Galena or anything else you might want to discuss. He being there is one of the reason we come back. He and the owners stike a perfect balance of letting the guests interact with each other, balancing that with some interactions just at the right time. We really like the fund raisers that they are involved in.. That really touched us. to the point of contributing to a local restaurant owner with cancer an no insurance. Their referrls to restaurants were "right on" especially the "Fried Green Tomatoes" venue. The FGH is just as clean and neat as ever. The Christmas village was up just as before, but I would not be dissapointed it they scalled it back since it really is a bit too much to expect any mere mortal to do. Susan is a "real person" with a perfect genuine personality for a B and B owner. Don is more reserved, but once engaged in conversation is very nice and interactive. I admire his handiness in fixing whatever needs fixing at the FGH. We still highly recommend this Guest House, but hope that the comments made about the food here are headed and corrected. We want nothing more than this historic House to thrive under the new enthusiastic owners. Susan and Don are great people and we really want them to succeed and to enjoy the dream they have had for so many years of owning a guest house.

Bob, thank you for your review and ranking us "excellent". We truly appreciate your feedback regarding the food portions and will heed them by making our meat portion larger. A few months ago we began purchasing all our bacon and sausage from a local, family owned and operated farm. The quality is excellent and we will continue to offer the very best locally sourced meats and other ingredients - and more of it. However, with so many people choosing vegetarian options, we will continue to ask guests if they would like the meat portion with their meal - especially since we will be increasing the size of the portion. Before we did this we were throwing away many portions of the meat at each breakfast and this waste is not something we feel right about.

Customer satisfaction, quality and safety are our primary considerations; this is why we do not serve buffet style. Insuring food safety by keeping food hot and free from contamination is difficult with a buffet but is an easy task when properly prepared and plated in our kitchen. Also, many of the fine dishes we prepare would not be as pleasing or possible on a buffet, like the Eggs Benedict or Apple Pecan Pancakes made to order. We do, however, endeavor to ask each guest if they would like second helpings on their entree; we apologize if we overlooked this detail while you were with us. We assure you that your next stay will include a large and satisfying breakfast each day and, once again, a sincere thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention.

We are pleased that you enjoyed everything else about your stay and look forward to seeing you here again.

My wife and I just got back from a short getaway where we stayed at the Farmer's Guest House. What a cozy and comfortable place, it felt like we were staying with family, only better :)
Don and Susan are wonderful hosts and made us feel right at home from the moment we stepped in the door. The only regret we had was that we were not able to stay longer. Susan's breakfast was top notch and the whole experience was wonderful! We will definitely be going back to stay there again. Can't wait.

What a great weekend. The B annB is conveniently locate just two block from the main shopping and dining area. Susan and Don were wonderful hosts and Charles took care of us all weekend. The place was decked out for the holidays with the largest collection of Christmas villages I have ever seen. The wine and cheese is a very nice touch and the breakfasts were phenomenal. We were there for the progressive dinner and Susan was able to fit us in at the last minute. We would definitely go back. It was a wonderful and relaxing weekend in Galena.

My husband and I never stayed at a B&B until our first visit at the Farmers Guest House earlier this year. We returned again in August for my birthday and yet again in early December to celebrate our wedding anniversary for a total of three visits this year. We feel like we are returning home when we stay at the Farmers Guest House. Susan and Don, our hosts, are friendly, informative, and just plain good folks. Since our last visit I have been diagnosed with food intolerances so I must eat gluten free and dairy free. Susan accommodated my dietary restrictions and baked blueberry muffins for breakfast which were better than any gluten and dairy filled muffin I have eaten. I finished all the muffins on the plate! Also, at breakfast, Susan presented each guest with a Christmas gift--so thoughtful and generous. All the rooms were decorated for Christmas complete with multiple Christmas trees throughout both floors of the B&B, an extensive Department 56 Christmas village (collectors will recognize the Dickens, Christmas in the City, Snow, and North Pole Villages), and Christmas books and magazines to read sitting in any number of sofas, armchairs and corners throughout the B&B. We have stayed in the same room each visit because we enjoy the sunny view overlooking the back yard. If you want a great location, the best hosts, best B&B staff, best gourmet breakfast, a comfortable collectibles-filled environment, then you must stay at the Farmers Guest House. You will be glad you did.
