“Fabulous, Elegant and Peaceful”

Captain Gear Guest House

My husband and I stayed for a couple of nights for a romantic weekend. We were the only guests during our stay and had an amazingly relaxing weekend. The 3 course breakfast was fabulous and over abundant.

We stayed in the Gear suite which was spacious and well appointed. The bedding was plush and no detail was spared in decorating this suite. We also had chocolate dipped strawberries and champagne awaiting in our room. There is a very nice selections od DVDs to also watch in the room.

The B&B is pushed back on 3-4 acres of private space. We took advantage of relaxing on the back patio as well as quietly read the paper all morning on the front porch.

There is a sitting parlor with beautful jazz playing all day and red wine to enjoy. There were also some yummy chocolate chip cookies.

Overall we LOVED this place and HIGHLY recommend it. The town of Galena itself was just ok. It is quaint and charming though kind of on the dull side in terms of selection. We were walking distance from the main street and shops. The stores sell a lot of knick knack type of items that has no appeal to me personally. I recommend going for a quite time with a significant other but no so much for the town itself.

    • Liked — The room itself was beautful, comfortable, plush and the breakfast was divine
    • Disliked — I have nothing negative to say about this place
    • Tips/Secrets: — We arrived after dark and it looked like the street ended before reaching the B&B so we missed it until we went back again. It looks like the road ends but it does go through.

My wife and I just spent two wonderful nights at the Captain Gear in Galena. With a huge number of B&B's to choose from in the Galena area, picking one can be a daunting task. Look no further than the Captain Gear! The attention to detail, beautiful accommodations and especially THE BREAKFAST are second to none! We will definitely be back!

My wife and I stayed two nights at the Captain Gear in the Mary Suite over the first weekend in June 2005. We were there celebrating our anniversary and Suzanne & Gary made it even more special!

The room was wonderful. It was very easy to see that attention to detail was everywhere. The home itself is very inviting and there were scented candles everywhere, which made it even better. The grounds were beautiful and it was a perfect distance from downtown Galena. The distance from town was nice because it gave you a sense of seclusion and you could not hear any of the traffic from Highway 20.

Oh and the breakfast, where do I begin? If you have never had a gourmet breakfast than you are in for a treat! Don't worry about having lunch because you will not have room. The walk to and from town comes in handy to work off the big meal. All the food was fresh and wonderful!

Suzanne and Gary were great hosts. We stayed over a Saturday night and they invited everyone to the parlor for wine and cheese. We were going to go downtown for dinner, but ended up staying at the house talking to them instead. They are warm and gracious hosts.

We are definitely going back and want to get the big suite next time for something different. The only bad thing I can say is the shower in our room could have had more water pressure, but the house is older so we didn't really care. Everything else was too nice! We almost did not want to tell people about it and keep it our secret, but we ended up telling everybody we know they have to stay here! You will not be disappointed.

My husband and I stayed in the Gear Suite of the Captain Gear Guest House in July 2005. We had a wonderful stay. The room costs a little more than the other rooms, but it's definitely worth it. It offers a beautiful space with lovely furniture, a very comfortable bed, clawfoot tub jacuzzi, large shower, TV /DVD player and sitting area, wide selection of romantic movies, high-quality bath products, great breakfast, lovely historic setting and very accommodating hosts.

We had to reschedule our original reservation because I had last-minute surgery, and they charged no penalty as they were able to re-sell the room. Then on our way to Galena for our rescheduled date, we had to turn around halfway there because an urgent situation arose with my work at about 11pm on Friday night. They were again very understanding - we did let them know that we would pay, because it was so last-minute. It was such a great place we don't regret that at all. It's just being fair to the owners, who certainly could have re-rented the room if they'd had some notice.

On Saturday, we called three different times to revise our arrival time, then ended up arriving about an hour or two earlier than the last time we gave them. They were there to give us a warm welcome, showed us to our room where delicious cookies and bottled water awaited, and promptly made reservations at an excellent restaurant at our request.

The walk into town is very nice and quiet, and about 7 minutes. It was dark late at night when we were walking back, but the lightning bugs made it fun and we felt safe.

This is our favorite bed-and-breakfast. We enjoyed a much-needed respite from our hectic lives. Our only regret was that we could only stay one night. If you go, stay at least two nights if you can, just to enjoy the wonderful room. We look forward to returning.

We just returned from a fantastic stay at the Captain Gear. The room was small, but not a postage stamp and typical for the period of the home (we didn't get the most expensive room, but it wasn't the cheapest either.) The decor was beautiful and very tasteful. The innkeeper (Suzanne) has a keen artistic eye. All the linens were Egyptian cotton from high end makers like Pottery Barn and Ralph Lauren. Breakfast was divine. All three courses were sumptuious and attractive to the eye. Nothing came out of a box!

The double parlor was really a treat. Excellent wine was provided for tasting, and many walnut cookies and better chocolates were readily provided. The bathroom was huge and we never wanted to leave the double whirlpool tub (heated jets keep the water hot!)

Just a little bit too far to walk to the downtown shopping area. Grounds are manicured and the patio in back is lovely. This was our 6th trip to Galena and we plan on coming back to the Captain Gear. The larger room is more expensive, but we got to peek in at it. (well worth the extra money)
