This review is sadly more about an unfortunate error on the hotel's part than the actual hotel and it is a shame this occurred as the hotel seemed nice on the whole.
I booked this hotel through a Wowcher deal and, because there were no standard rooms available on my chosen weekend, agreed to pay £10 per night extra for an upgrade to a king size bed in a room on the front with views over the bay. I paid £90 in a train fare from London and my companion drove down from Scotland. We arrived late and tired on a cold and wet Friday (we had checked that 10pm would be an acceptable arrival time and were assured in writing that it would be) to be told that we wouldn't be charged the upgrade charge as our room did not look out on to the front. I was not bothered by this but, upon opening the door of the room, I was rather taken aback to see that the room was not a double but a twin, I would have thought this and not the different view might have been mention-worthy! When we went back to try to sort this out we got nowhere. The chap stared hard at the screen and told us they were full and couldn't do anything that night. That soon turned into the news that they wouldn't be able to do anything either night. I tried to clarify what had happened, had our room just been given away to people who were not happy with a twin but who had arrived earlier? Were Wowcher customers not given the same importance as anyone else? what sort of compensation would they offer for us having travelled up there expecting so much more than we were presented with? Sadly no information was forthcoming and we were told we would have to speak to Lisa the next day. The next morning we went down for breakfast which was extremely good. It turned out it was Lisa who served us and she volunteered an apology before we brought the subject up. I cannot praise Lisa highly enough for the way in which she handled the situation (although her explanation of a work experience member of staff moving people around in rooms did not make full sense); I had been ready to explode the night before but she defused the situation in a highly professional manner and had me agreeing to take a bottle of house wine as recompense (I had been aiming for much more!). She also offered to call the sister hotel to see if they had availability. Unfortunately she returned with the news that they did not have any availability but soon after we got back to the room she rang to say they had had a cancellation. So we ended up staying at Uplands in Cartmel for the second night of the deal (review to follow).
As such I don't feel I experienced Clarke's to the full, but from what I saw it is a nice hotel although a little dated. The furniture in the room was very old fashioned but everything was clean and tidy. The bar looked like a proper pub and if breakfast was anything to go by I'm sure the food was also of a high standard. Parking plentiful and views pleasant. Just a shame how the visit worked out, but thanks to Lisa for her help to resolve the situation.
