“Beautiful spot, fantastic staff, yum food and super comfy beds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2010

My girlfriend and I along with two good friends returned to Matafonua for the second year in a row - that speaks for itself - and like the previous year we were greeted with the same warmth and generosity by the hosts Sally and Dave and they went out of their way to make our stay relaxing. The location is fantastic with a 20m stroll to an often deserted sheltered white sand beach with good coral and fish life very close to the shore. Across the road you can find Happy Ha'apai Divers and Ocean Blue Adventures that run dive trips and whale watching tours - these were both far superior to anything we experienced in Vava'u. The traditional fales have really comfy beds and good mosquito nets, the showers are solar heated and are perfect after a day at the beach. I have saved the best for last - the food- sourcing food in such a remote location is a logistical nightmare but despite this it is excellent. One of the highlights of our trip was waiting for the menu board to go up and see what fantastic food we could choose from. This truly is a magic spot and if you want a fantastic holiday then this is the place whether you're travelling alone, as a couple (romantic enough for engagements to be common) or with family. We will be back thats for sure!

My friend and I stayed at Matafonua Lodge prior to a 9 day kayaking trip to the islands of the Ha'apai group. We didn't know what to expect and were pleasantly surprised to find everything so perfect. Dave and Sally were wonderful hosts, who encouraged friendliness amongst their guests and were a great source of knowledge about the area. The food was very good and interesting and the beach fales were very comfortable. It was a bit of pain having to walk across soft sand to the toilets and showers, but that's part of the Tongan experience and there was both electricity and hot water, which is not necessarily the case in other accommodation in Tonga. The setting is perfect, with views to die for and adjacent to fabulous coral reefs for snorkelling. I would strongly recommend hiring a bike and riding around the island - it's the best way to see the sights and experience local culture. I would definately go to Matafonua Lodge again.

the location is so romantic, you can see the sunrise and the moonlight both together because the lodge is on the hedge of Foa Island. the colours of the sea are unique.
Dave and Sally are very kind and excellent chef :-)

The amenities were simple, practicable and relaxing. What I liked best was the cool breeze that blew in the evening to keep the mossies away and the temperature down. Our rooms were tidy and basic. Two minutes walk to a spectacular beach.
I found my stay beautifully relaxing.

Do not go here if your expect animation to take care of the kids, a pool and night life. Do go if you want beaches for yourself, very nice food, very small groups of tourists whereever you go, amazing snorkelling on your doorstep and good hospitality from Dave and Sally.

Just returned from 8 days of rest and relaxation, in an excellent location with amazing hosts. Sally and David, you really made our trip very special with all the care and attention you gave to making each and every day a memorable one for all members of the family. The food was amazing especially when you consider how little produce is available on the island and that all the food arrives via boat from the mainland. Nothing was too much trouble for Sally who accommodated one very limited and fussy eater and others with very discerning palates! No mean feat and each day there were several specials on the menu to tempt us all. The staff were friendly and helpful and made the children feel very comfortable and relaxed and nothing was too much trouble for them, and every request was made and executed with a genuine smile. The resort is perfectly positioned in what is really an untouched piece of paradise. We were blown away with the natural, simplistic beauty of the island and the easy access to some excellent snorkelling right on your door step. By the end of 8 days we were so happy and relaxed that we were very sad to leave, and couldn’t actually believe that the time had passed so quickly and peacefully and if it hadn’t been for the fact that our 10 year old had kept a journal of each day’s activities we would all have sworn we’d maybe been on “island time” for 4 days. Thank you to everyone at Matafonua for such a wonderful holiday that will stay with us a marvellous memory.

Had a fabulous time here. Fales by the beach, two beaches to choose from, one a little rocky and the other a typical stunning tropical island beach. Fales clean, shared toilet/shower block clean, food great, Dave and Sally will ensure your stay is what you want it to be - fantastic kiwi hosts. If you are diving, it will tick the boxes, whale watching was great - saw whales every day. Snorkelling is wonderful - straight our off the beach. If you are looking for value for money without a resort style flavour, then this is the place for you. You really feel like you are on a tropical island at Matafonua. Loved it!
