“Hilton Orrington - A List of Pros and Cons”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2011

Pros:
1. Comfortable beds and pillows.
2. Easy walking distance to Northwestern and restaurants.
3. Does not feel like a big chain hotel.
4. Good, working, free high-speed internet (big plus!).

Cons:
1. Very thin walls and doors. I woke up at 7am thinking there was someone in the room, but it was the guy next door having a phone conversation with his business buddy.
2. The refrigerator was tiny and broken into slots for sodas, and only accessible by a minibar key from the front desk - it's very difficult to store anything (your own snacks, etc) in there. There is no microwave.
3. Small bathroom. Not really a problem, but they should consider putting a small glass shelf to the right of the sink, because there's very little space to put your toiletries.

Typical business / typical Hilton hotel. Relatively clean although showing signs of needing a touch up in various places (e.g. damp patches on ceiling from room above). Staff were mainly friendly although a couple of more surly guys on reception at times. Aircon chilled the room but was very noisy. valet parkers all efficient and friendly. Location was good for what we wanted and I guess easy enough to get to the trains into downtown Chicago. Asked for a microwave in the room and got one but a touch confused when a kettle was not available. Pet hate of the really small / shallow bath and shower curtain present but I guess that's the norm for this part of the world. Check out Andy's frozen custard place round the corner if you stay

The Orrington has a great location if you're visiting Northwestern, but it's certainly not up to Northwestern standards. The heating and cooling in the rooms is noisy and our room was dirty. Rooms are small. That said, you can't beat the location.

The only realistic choice if you have to be in Evanston

Which makes the hotel keenly aware that they can charge a lot, be somewhat arrogant, ignorant, and stay just about average.

Pros:
Walking to downtown Evanston and NU campus
Rooms are nicely appointed but... (see cons)
Nice breakfast, food option within or close to hotel

Cons:
.....rooms are ok but the bathrooms are small
There are no views
There is street noise in the evenings sometimes but bearable
The AC/Heat has the loud, cheap blowers that nearly all average hotels use now. Expect to wake up everytime the thermostat kicks the fan on/off

Room Tip: They all pretty much face the street and a dormitory

The Orrington = Evanston. Evanston = The Orrington. Clearly the best situated hotel in the city. Whatever inconveniences you may have at The Orrington, which are minor when you think about it, are worth it for being able to have the honor of staying at The Orrington. Tell the other no-service "Continental Breakfast" properties that you are staying at a true, full service hotel with grand tradition.

8 of us stayed here to go to Wrigleyfield. It is located 2-3 blocks from the train so it worked great to take the train downtown. It has a restaurant called "Globe". This place had excellent food for a resonable price in Chicago. The service was great and they have outdoor seating. We ate a great breakfast outside on Sunday morning and it was beautiful. Since it is close to Northwestern there are several restaurants such as Burger King, Einstein Bagels etc. really close. They do have valet parking for $20(I think). I believe you almost have to use this because there is no parking n the street at night. The bathrooms were small as reviewers stated but the rooms were clean, had great coffee and a wonderful mini bar with high end booze if you wanted it. It was a great place to stay!!!!

We stayed for two nights at the Hilton Orrington to attend a wedding. While the function itself went very well, we were disappointed with our accommodation.

This is an old hotel which has obviously had a facelift, but the designers certainly didn't consider guest needs when they created at least some of the rooms with bathrooms so tiny and poorly laid out that if you have more than a toothbrush and hairbrush, you're out of space.

Our room was spacious enough, but we visited quite a number of rooms being used by other guests attending the wedding and it its obvious there is a considerable variation in rooms with the same rate. It really depends on exactly which room you get as to what it will be like. Some had tiny closet spaces, others had small rooms with unattractive outlooks. Some were spacious and also had reasonable bathrooms. Airconditioning (we were there in summer) was quite noisy.

We couldn't fault the service and the catering at the wedding, and the function staff were helpful and very professional. We were less impressed with the service (very slow) and the quality of food at breakfast, which was generous in size but not of particularly high quality. The layout of the hotel is long and narrow, and the ground floor public areas are not particularly welcoming. That said, the location is convenient for this part of Chicago and there are restaurants and shopping very near by. If we were going back to the area, I'd check out the other surrounding hotels.

Room Tip: Convenient location but with negatives
