I stayed over at the Homestead on a Friday and Saturday night with my wife as we were in Evanston for the weekend in June 2011. It was picked due to some positive comments on Tripadvisor and its score against other local hotels.
The Homestead sells itself on its colonial charm and old style luxury which, as a purpose build hotel in the1920s is fair enough, but there is a grey area where old style charm becomes just old and tired. The following comments do reflect my appreciation of the age of the buildng and accept that some areas cannot be changed or should not be changed.
The good stuff : excellent location to walk into Evanston; speedy and simple internet connection; clean and comfy room; friendly staff; nice bedroom carpet.
The average stuff; bathroom was adequate; more towels required; TV was old but worked; window blinds very shabby and spoiled the luxury feel.
The poor stuff; breakfast. I cannot understand what they are thinking about with their breakfast set up. The actual food is a very average , help yourself cold buffet which is acceptable in a motel but not what I would have expected at the Homestead, especially as they are very proud of their 4 star restaurant which is very popular in the evenings. We did not eat in the restaurant.
It is the location and allocated space for the breakfast that got me. In a room no bigger than an average double bedroom, they have squeezed in about 5 tables plus the "buffet" table to accommodate the breakfast. It was not a good start to the day, crowding round the buffet, squeezing past chairs and tables to pick your breakfast seat. You were lucky to get a seat and many people went out to the front terrace or back to their rooms.
What puzzled me was that the large dining room was empty and laid for evening dinner . How much effort would it take to move breakfast into that area to make it a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.
If we do stay again I will negotiate a lower room rate to exclude breakfast and walk the two blocks into Evanston to find a nice breakfast dinner for a more relaxing start to the day.
