“Consistently good seafood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

I have been enjoying Davis Street for years. We’ve gone as a family and also for date night.

There is a particular booth we like and have almost always been accommodated when we request it with our reservation.

Some of the servers we’ve had have been outstanding, providing very attentive and friendly service.

The seafood always appears to be fresh and is reasonably prices.

Usually we just work through the appetizer menu and make a wonderful meal out of that. They have a great variety of appetizers and some are very creative. The blackened squid is a real favorite. We also enjoy the fresh and flavorful oysters. For lunch the wedge salad (loaded with crab) is great and very reasonably priced. The soups and gumbos have great flavor and an abundance of seafood.

“Consistently Good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

From the complimentary valet parking to the friendly wait staff to the really fresh fish, if you want to be assured you will enjoy your dinner, this is the place. Four of us each had a different fish and all were delicious. The service was quick, without feeling rushed. Excellent really. The atmosphere is perfect for having a conversation. The booths are roomy. They accept reservations. We've been coming here for many years and it just keeps getting better.

“Gone downhill”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

My husband and I discovered Davis Street many years ago. The fish was always good, complimentary sourdough bread, specials on a chalk board. It was a little pricey for our budget so it was a special occasion spot. We've been a few times in the past couple of years and it just hasn't been the same. We tried again today for lunch and it was just bad. My husband ordered fish and chips and the fish was slimy and part of it still had the skin on. He also had the red beans and rice that he has always liked, but today they were watery and not at all spicy. I ordered the lemonfish, which I had never heard of, but the waiter said it was similar to mahi-mahi. The texture was mushy and tasted like it had been previously frozen though they claimed it was fresh. Also the waiter paid us very little attention though we overheard him explaining to the well-to-do family behind us all the details of the specials. (For us he had just pointed to them on the menu.)
It really saddens us because we used to love the place but after today I don't think we will ever go back.

“Good Food..slow service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013 via mobile

I was visiting friends in Evanston and we wanted a place that was nearby with simple food. We were not disappointed. We had local smelts (fried in a light batter) jumbo shrimp cocktail ( 4 huge shrimps ) and a yellow/red beet salad as our first course, portions are large and shareable. The complimentary potato chips and bread were fine. We all had Alaskan Halibut as our entree, well prepared and very tasty. The service was slow, almost to the point where we were concerned our waiter was lost. The time between courses was more than leisurely. Thankfully we were in no hurry but others might be more distressed. That's why I didn't give the restaurant a higher rating.

“"The Fish Place"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

Friends and colleagues and I go to the Davis Street Fishmarket Restaurant from time to time. My reactions are mixed. Some of the food is good, but some is rather ordinary or even uninspiring. Bread is often plan and white, whereas I like whole-grain. Vegetables can be over-cooked. The clams and oysters are very good. I like the raw clams and the lobsters, but the "butter" supplied is strange, and the trimmings don't contribute.

The atmosphere is hectic, crowded, dark, not calm. Though the out-door tables are nice.
