“Amazing deal for suprisingly great hotel”

Hilton Garden Inn Evanston

Sep 11, 2008

I am originally from Evanston, but now live in NY. Maybe I'm jaded from the ridiculously expensive cost of living in NY, but this is an AMAZING hotel! I usually stay in 5-star hotels only, because I can't stand the variability in quality of lesser hotels. However, this was a last minute trip and we're staying for one week so we decided to gamble on the great deal of this hotel. I've stayed at the Omni and am not blown away, although it's very nice. So, the Hilton Garden Inn is extremely clean, huge rooms, free internet, I was amazed when I walked in. The staff was extremely nice, there is a pantry/convenience shop downstairs, and the restaurant is decent for quick meals. Our price was $130/night, so I think this is amazing. Stay here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't usually write reviews, but I'm so afraid that Hilton will not make enough money (does $130/night really pay for all this?) so I want to spread the word!

Not bad! Clean, comfortable (though mattresses are a little too firm for my tastes), and about three blocks from an "L" station. Parking is in an adjacent garage, and does incur an additional fee. Lots of shopping and entertainment nearby.

The hotel is very well located. Room was very comfortable. Staff generally very helpful. As one of the other reviews noted, do take advantage of the surrounding restaurants, cafes. There are some very good choices. We found nearby late night food options to be limited. We arrived late (approximately 10:30/11 pm) on the first night of our stay in Evanston; room service was no longer available and we asked the front desk for information on late night dining -- we did get one suggestion, but the directions were unclear and we couldn't find the place.

Pros- Beautiful indoor pool, spa/jacuzzi, and exercise room made this a wonderful oasis on a cold winter weekend. Central downtown location in great college town - 5 minute walk from Metra and CTA stations and 5 or 10 minute walk to dozens of geat restaurants and opportunites to shop. Friendly staff gladly let us check in two hours early.
Cons - For the price (high, but not outrageous for the area) do they really have to charge a dollar per local phone call, $8 per hour for the kids to use the in-room video games, and $15 per person for a breakfast buffet that would be complimentary in most hotels charging half the price? Also, the (surprisingly) free wireless internet access in the rooms is VERY slow and unreliable.
Summary - recommended, but have the kids bring their own entertainment, don't rely on the internet connection, and by all means skip the in-house dining and take advantage of the many wonderful neighborhood restaurants.

“Great hotel, Pool too cold to swim”

Hilton Garden Inn Evanston

The hotel has great rooms to stay in. Clean, large and comfotable. We were traveling with our four year old and stayed only at the hotel because of the pool. The pool was fridgid. Our son lasted 10 minutes before his lips turned blue and he couldn't stop shivering. The hot tub was too hot. We were hoping he could warm up in there but it was scalding hot water. We had an un-happy four year old.

We went to our room after the pool and got warmed up and the fire alarm proceeded to go off. We were not told if we should leave our rooms, there were no hotel staff to help direct or anything. We ended up going out to the hallway and making our way to the stairs when the alarm went off. We never saw a hotel staff person during the whol ordeal.
