“Best place to stay while attending NU Center of Public Safety”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2011

I recently stayed here while attending Northwestern University Center for Public Safety. It could not have been more convenient. It was located right across the street. The staff was friendly and they kept your room very clean. This hotel has an indoor pool located on the first floor and it was very clean. The only thing that I can complain about this hotel is that the furniture in the rooms are starting to look old. There were marks and scratches all over them. My room had a microwave and a refrigerator in it which made it nice for meals. If you are flying out of O'Hare airport, this hotel offers car service to the airport. Ten minutes before you leave, simply call down the front desk for a ride. The service costs me $40.00. I highly recommend this service if you are flying when you leave the hotel.

I stayed here when the weather was in the single digits. A few great experiences made this a five-star stay for me:

- One of the first things I inspect in a hotel room are the sheets because I'm allergic to fragrance and detergent. I detected a slight hint of fabric softener but didn't think it would be a problem. Unfortunately my allergies flared up at 2 AM. I asked housekeeping if there's anything they could do. They ended up washing two sets of sheets with hypoallergenic stuff and brought them to our room 3 hours later. I was extremely grateful. The new sheets did the trick.

- Not having been in the single digits before, I didn't know how difficult being outside for more than 5 minutes would be. Thank goodness for the hotel's complimentary shuttle which was extremely responsive.

- The pool and gym area were heaven. Warm, humid, and awesome to be in when the weather outside is outrageously cold.

I would definitely stay here again.

Even though the Orrington is also a Hilton now, and folks will tell you the Orrington is the best hotel in Evanston, I disagree. I have always found the HGI to be the best--large food, very clean, fridge and microwave in room, free internet, walkable to campus and all downtown Evanston shops and restaurants. This stay, I had a few hiccups with maintenance issues, but all were addressed.

Awful room - Jr Suite Upgrade....make that a downgrade!
Room has 3 sets of big windows...nice for natural light just wrong for sleeping. All windows are facing high rise building across street....none of the 3 sets of drapes fit...so the light nor the view cannot be blocked! Can you say lack of privacy...including a window facing directly into the bathreoom and toilet - almost funny in a sick way!!
If this is not enough...the room heat and air handler is 3 feet from head of bed...very noisy and intrusive! Woke me up three times!
TV for bed is in a hallway...not really visible from bed...what a poor room design.

Not worth the price. Gym was closed during my stay but was not alerted to the fact until I went down in the morning. Sign was not updated regarding construction dates. Throws off whole morning routine!! Employees are very nice, though.

Had all the amenities we needed for a short Christmas visit with Chicago family without having to be in the big city. Management allowed us use of the fireplace lobby to gather for presents and conversation. On-site restaurant was a hidden jewel - lots of choices; tasty; friendly service; reasonably priced. Room service menu was essentially the same as the on-site restaurant; prices too. Pool was small, but we don't generally use those anyway; and a plus - one didn't have to traverse the lobby to access the pool/workout area. Room was typical hotel/motel size and layout, but with air-cushion bed and down comforter, flat-screen TV, microwave, refrigerator; plus Wi-Fi, desk, ironing board, hair dryer, etc. My summary lists quiet, and it was, but this floor seemed to attract a lot of children who delighted in slamming doors and running in the hallway early in the morning. Parking ramp was adjacent to the hotel and, even though not connected, had a sheltered walkway. Was in an area of Evanston with many shops, eatery's, and entertainment, all within about three blocks, and many other venues a little further away.

This hotel is a great value for the Evanston/North Shore area of Chicago. It's conveniently located by the Metra and Purple Line Stations, in downtown Evanston, just a couple of blocks from Northwestern. It's new, clean, with spacious rooms, free wi-fi, a pool, fitness center, meeting rooms and a restaurant/bar. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. It's not terribly convenient to ORD airport but that's indicative of the area, no fault of the hotel. Highly reccomended.
