When you walk into the lobby of the Lexington Inn & Suites in Effingham, Illinois and see the wonderful glass tiles and fireplace with flat screen TV's your expectations for a "hidden gem" hotel are raised. However, when you see your room you realize they put all the rehab money into the lobby like the hotel rescue show on cable TV. One hint in the lobby should have been the great fireplace with the Virginia dry-stack stone work -- which was turned off. It was a cold, nasty night when I arrived, a warm fire would have been a real treat, but I'll bet they only turn the gas fireplace on for special occations like Thanksgiving and Christmas to save money.
They saved money in the guest room too. I was on the 4th floor and the elevator had a broken-up cheap fake wood laminate on the floor. The carpet in my room was long past its replacement date with large dark stains in the middle (I am guessing food stains) on the carpet and a very nasty looking white stain right by the bed (where you would put your feet to get out of bed) as if someone vomited in bed and the stomach-acid had bleached the beige carpet white. The room TV is an old, square, tube-set not the HD flat screens most hotels now have in their rooms. No mini-fridge or microwave, although there is a nice stone counter top sink. . The desk chair was old and ripped with a splash of white paint on it -- maybe a temporary replacement as it didn't fit the room décor.
Breakfast is limited to cold cereal, imitation-looking scrambled eggs, and pasty briskets and gravy. I went down the street to McDonald's. One the plus side, the hotel is in easy walking distance to the convention center, several sit-down restaurants, and Wal-Mart is right across the street if you need shaving cream or toothpaste.
Bottom line: if you want a nice room book next door at the Hilton Garden Inn. I've stayed there several times and enjoyed it. If you want cheap and you can get this hotel on a sale price, it's someplace to sleep. Other hotels near by are Country Inn & Suites and Fairfield Inn.
