First, looking at the reviews on this restaurant make me laugh. People commenting on the dated features, the older carpet, etc....aren't you aware that this is part of it's uniqueness and charm? If anyone has ever been to Hawaii, been on the Big Island, local parts of Maui, as well as like Lani, the small local places look exactly like this. Hell, watch the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and you will see a place just like this that is featured in that movie. Especially on the weekend when the music is playing, the drinks are on the table...you feel like you're on vacation. Now, how about we talk about the important thing...the food.
For appetizers we tried a few things thus far. Per my wife, their crab ragoons are the best she's had in the area. You can actually taste some crab in there, vs. just the cream cheese with a hint of taste. The Cantonese Fried Shrimp are also excellent, with a light tempera batter that has a really nice light taste. Will admit, I wish they gave more (I believe they give 6).
I have tried several main courses. The Chef Don's Special Steak is tasty with the sauces, however I will admit that mine was a bit overdone, however I did not specify that I wanted it medium, but I just assumed it was the default. But the portion was generous, and the sauce was great. My favorite meal here, and probably my favorite meal in the area of any restaurant, is the Hong Sue Har Pea Pod. It's shrimp that are lightly fried in egg batter (soooo good), with mushrooms and pea pods (make sure you ask for little pea pods, or else you get more than you can handle). And the sauce that they put on it makes everything taste great together. Seriously, an amazing dish!
The drinks are all outstanding, and they sure have a heavy hand when pouring the alcohol....every drink gave me a buzz. My favorite was the Blue Hawaiian.
