Ok, to be fair, I majored in anthropology and archeology in college, so this place was of special interest to me. However, my kids and husband found it interesting too. I thought the interpretive center was the best museum of Native American culture I have ever seen. There is a movie telling about the mounds and after it is over a curtain raises to reveal a life-size Indian village behind the glass. You can actually walk into this display and be surrounded by the sights and sounds of the ancient Indian settlement. The exhibits explain in detail the culture and history of the area. There is also an exhibit detailing the discovery and excavation of the mounds. The mounds are visible behind the huge glass windows of the center. There is a scale model oriented to the actual site showing you what you are looking at. After you finish inside, you can walk through glass doors into the actual site. You are welcome to walk on the paths around the mounds. The largest of the mounds, Monk's mound, is the only mound that you are allowed to climb. There are steps you can climb. From the top of the mound, you can even see the skyline of St. Louis. I enjoyed the history and my children enjoyed the climb! Did I mention the beautiful natural location with native plants and wildlife? We saw blue herron and deer. A very special place! A must see!
