“Magical Christmas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2010

Kilronan Castle is an impressive venue at the best of times, but when you add a blanket of snow, a good mix of guests, an army of helpful staff and a generous dollop of festive cheer, you have almost everything you need for a magical Christmas.

Sadly for us, two members of our party of four could not make it because of the weather – a factor which affected many other guests. For those that were lucky enough to get through, the hotel delivered a genuine and warm welcome which started at check in and continued throughout the three night stay. We were also pleasantly surprised at how friendly most of the other guests were – this cannot always be taken for granted!

The hotel offered comfortable and well presented bedrooms, excellent food and service throughout and plenty of generous festive touches. The attitude of the staff (management and general) was perfectly pitched throughout and never overly formal. None of the staff seemed to be bothered about working at Christmas and nothing was too much trouble. The food was good and plentiful, and the entertainment laid on each day was also well suited.

Despite the number of children staying at the hotel, unrelated adults could still enjoy their Christmas without interruption as most children were well behaved and encouraged to make the most of the games and DVDs on offer in the library.

On the minus side, the hotel does need to address the standard of heating. Granted that parts of the hotel are very old and that some draughts should be expected but in certain areas, the heating just wasn't on at all. In addition, Wi-Fi is only available in two public areas of the hotel and an effort should be made to extend this to include bedrooms in 2011.

Single room supplement could also be revised downwards. Its not fair to penalise single travellers but this is a gripe I have about virtually every hotel in the country and is not unique to this one!

Noted that there are a number of comments about the hotel appearing unfinished and I can see why this is being said. This aside, the original building was lovingly restored and sympathetically extended and this takes time as well as serious amounts of money. This is not your typical and impersonal concrete and glass hotel – this place oozes history and quality and while progress may be slow, they are trying to do things properly. Kudos too for doing this in the current economic climate.

I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this hotel and I look forward to returning there myself in the future.

My girlfriend and I spent two nights at the Kilronan Castle Hotel in December 2010. The hotel was constructed a few years ago from an old manor house, that was mostly just a shell. They have really done wonderful work in building the hotel--particularly the woodwork. The grounds are lovely, particularly between the hotel and the lack.

Our room was spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable.

The staff is comprised primarily of Europeans, including people from Poland and Germany. I would say that the Irish staff members are outnumbered by those from the continent, who are housed in apartments near the hotel. With the exception of the Irish manager, who was officious and unfriendly, the hotel, restaurant, and bar staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

Be forewarned: This hotel is off the beaten path. County Roscommon is a very rural area that is not known for its tourism. While the hotel is surrounded by beautiful Irish countryside, there are no towns of any size nearby. The closest is Sligo, which is on the coast about 30 minutes away.

We had only two gripes: First, the hotel's restaurant considers itself a 4 star establishment, with prices to match. Unfortunately, neither the meals we ate in the restaurant nor the bar lived up to the price or expectations. Second, wifi is available in only one common room of the hotel. Given this day and age, it really is silly not to offer wifi throughout the establishment, particularly for the many international travelers who now rely on Skype for phone service while traveling.

Don't let the bus loads of American tourists put you off, this is an absolutely stunning hotel in the back end of beyond. The restaurant was exceptional and the bar food was top notch too. We stayed in one of the tower rooms in the old part of the castle complete with 4 poster bed and it was truly flawless. The grounds are pleasant although there is a feel of the unfinished particularly in the car park areas.

This castle is beautiful if and when you can finally get there. It says it is in County Roscommon. True but WHERE! Finally had to call the castle and get someone to come find us and lead us to the castle. NEVER would have found it via the directions we kept getting. It is really out in the Boonies but worth the stay after you get there. NO shopping anywhere around so don't expect to do such. The castle has been renovated quite beautifully. The staff was VERY helpful and pleasant. Need Spa reservations ahead of arrival. The dinner was good but not outstanding for the price. Again service was quite nice. We drove from THe Cliffs of Moher to Kilronan. Supposed to be a 2 hr drive. Took us 9 hours. We met every cow and farmer in Ireland and none of them knew how to get to Kilronan even the man that said he stayed there last year! We walked over the estate. Didn't seem to be anything else to do.

We recently stayed for a weekend in Kilronan Castle for our wedding anniversary everything was perfect from the warm welcome we received on arrival to the outstanding service and superb meal in the Douglas Hyde restaurant. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to one of the rooms in the original castle and the bed was without a doubt one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in. the spa was also out of this world, the ultimate in relaxation.
We would most definitely recommend this hotel to everyone. the staff are fantastic, Reggie and the night porter Enda made our stay especially enjoyable and we will certainly be back again next year if not sooner.

Driving home after a business meeting in Sligo, we decided to divert slightly at Boyle to grab some dinner and break the journey. What a find!

We had been in a 4 star hotel in Sligo earlier that day and were unimpressed with the poor ambience and appalling prices for food and drink.

It did however take a little bit of finding in the dark! very poor local signage and no lit up signage at the hotel entrance. We called into two other castles in the area trying to find the hotel!

Altough we arrived without a booking and they were in the middle of a large wedding, we were immediately welcomed and made to feel at home by the staff. Superb, food drink and friendly 5 Star service which were well deserving of a 5 star rating.

So many 5 Star Hotels in Ireland make the mistake of over training and "stiff shirting" staff to the point where their natural talent and charm is wiped out. Kilronan staff are just perfect based on our first visit.

And, the prices were very good value.

A special word of commendation to a young Drumsna waitress (Lisa) and also a young Restaurant manager who took a few minutes away from his post to give us a quick guided tour.

We will definitely be back for another meal and an overnight or two.
