“Slightly Tarnished Angel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

The aurora of Frank Lloyd Wright and the Craftsman period permeates the Silversmith on the old Jewelers Row, a block off Michigan Avenue where the second floor lobby sits eye level with the Elevated tracks. All reminiscent of Chicago times past. After the first stay last January in a magnificent Craftsman room with floor to (very high) ceiling drapes and beautiful craftsman furnishings, a return visit was a sure thing.

However, the second stay this August was disappointing. Check-in took long because they couldn't find the reservation, and continued to look through paper and electronic records despite being presented with a printed confirmation. The room was smaller and disappointingly decorated as sort of a art deco knockoff -- or possibly1950s modern, not unlike many boutique hotels with quirky decor that doesn't always click. An odd touch was a window seat under windows that faced only the barren walls of other buildings. High point was a curvy desk that seemed authentic 1930s. And a large splashy piece of art on the wall that gave the room a little zing. It was a long way from the style and aura the January room emitted.

It is still a fine hotel very well located down the street from Millenium Park and the Art Institute, a block and a half from what used to be Marshall Fields and the El right out front.

Room Tip: Ask for a Craftsman-like room -- toward the back if the occasional rumble of trains is a bother. Th...

We really want to like this hotel, but we have to give it a 3 out of 5 for this stay. While the location and the size of the rooms are great, three big things caused problems on this stay. Our floor (seven) was under construction and they really should have communicated that to us. It was very confusing when we got off the elevator into the middle of it. The entire floor was very dusty, including our room. We booked this on KAYAK and I believe they are putting all the discounted deal bookings on the construction floor. Second, our comforter and both sheets had significant stains on them the first night. I called down to the front desk and it took a very long time for someone to answer then took an hour and a half for replacement sheets! I really don't know how housekeeping could have missed these stains. Third, the service from the staff was hit or miss. Most of them seemed very nice, but the woman that checked us in was very curt and didn't even tell us they had a breakfast each morning. This could be a great hotel due to the location and size-but overall we were disappointed. Note-they have completed construction on 10, 9, and 8. They are on 7 and working their way down.

I stayed here with my girlfriend for two nights in July. We booked a double bedroom but when we checked in, they told us there's only a king room available. They were not apologetic or anything. The king suit was not well taken care of. It smelled dusty and the curtain rail was broken so we couldn't properly shut the curtains. The following night, we moved to a double room and the curtain rod there was also broken! The staff was okay competent but not friendly. The location is fairly convenient.

Very quiet, despite being on Wabash, where the trains run by. We barely heard them from our room in the back. The hotel is very close to the Art Institute and the Chicago Cultural Center as well as Millennium Park. You can walk from here to just about anywhere downtown. You also have very quick access to the trains and buses. The doormen and desk clerks are very helpful and cheerful and they have lots of information about how to get to places and things to see. The valet car service was good--we had short waits for our car both times we asked for it.

A very clean and quiet hotel. Decor completely Arts and Crafts. Old building. Rooms average size, but good. Spacious bath. Simple free breakfast in spacious lobby. Restaurant closed for renovation. Very friendly staff. But: The hotel will be completely re-done for 2014, so it will look very different.

This hotel has ultra thin walls that do not disrupt any sound. The sound of the el train was loud, but not as loud as the sounds coming from the room next door were horribly loud and XXX rated. Comfortable bed, lots of pillows, big bathrooms, but the sound really was so bad I couldn't rate this hotel any higher.

Room Tip: Bring earplugs!

We stayed at the Silversmith for 4 nights In queen room. The hotel seemed historic and our room was very nice, and clean. The staff were very friendly. Breakfast included coffee and juice with bagels and danishes. There's a very large lounge area in the lobby where we could sit anytime and chat with friends. The location is great, right around all. He theatres, shopping and plenty of places to eat. (Starbucks, Rudy's, Macy's, Target, Gap, DSW Shoes, etc, lots of stores within a few blocks)
Can walk to the Magnificent Mile in 15 min. subway and buses are just outside the door.
We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a high room away from the front of the hotel to avoid the noise from the subway. Bring milk...
