“Best place in Chicago to stay, couples or families”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2012

Disclosure: I've never NOT stayed at the Silversmith on a trip to Chicago. However, over the Easter weekend my wife and i decided to take the kids to Chicago for a long weekend...and i made the mistake of making a reservation at a new hostel that opening this year. It was considerably cheaper (meh) but the main attraction was having all five of us in a private room with private bath. Yeah, forced family togetherness was the plan-o!

The other facility had neither a private room nor private bath (despite a security deposit and multiple email confirmations beforehand) and my family was high and dry 300 miles from home. Not wanting to have the trip spoiled i dialed the Silversmith with the hope that they would have two rooms available at remotely moderate rates due to the last minute booking. I've dealt with Shannon at the hotel several times and i was fortunate enough to get ahold of her one hour before the end of her shift. She confirmed there was still a few rooms left and wound up hooking us up with adjoining suites. She's truly a special person. Our trip was saved and my wife was not forced to share a bathroom with me and the three teenagers. WINNER!

I was happy to learn they have fruit infused water down in the lobby, what a nice touch. the kids made sure to walk up from the street level to the lobby to get a glass before hitting the elevator to our room. every time.

The rooms were tremendous and housekeeping was phenomenal too. I've booked several rooms for an adult couples trip in August. I will NEVER book a room anywhere else on my annual trips to chicago.

Thank you, Silversmith. You are the best!!!

Room Tip: make nice with the staff

I stayed here for 5 nights for a conference, and wasn't disappointed.

The location is great. It was convenient to get the train from o'hare airport and walk to the hotel.

Location is convenient for convention centre well as seeing the sights.

Major plus points include the attached diner Ada's which I thought was excellent, and excellent inclusive Internet access.

Its a historic Art deco type hotel. Only negative was probably some aspects of room were slightly dated, some of which was understandable given it's historic hotel status.

Room Tip: The road side can be noisy

Stayed for the first time at the Silversmith while in Chicago. Great location, the staff is so accommodating and kind, the rooms are very clean and comfortable. Our room was in the back of the Hotel, we had NO noise of the city, or any other guests, at all. I will be staying again, and would highly recommend The Silversmith Hotel & Suites. This is from someone who requires cleanliness, comfort and quiet while traveling, and the Siversmith exceeded all expectations!!

As we were driving south on I-90; we called the hotel to ask for directions and valet parking ($49/night). They told us to exit on Washington and turn right on Wabash Ave. It was a good thing, because while we have a Garmin, once we got in between the tall buildings, the GPS signal was lost. It was very easy to get to the hotel.

When we got to the hotel on the right side of the road, a porter came out to help us immediately. He quickly had all of our luggage out and loaded on to his cart. The car attendant quickly came out and took care of our car. They gave us two cards (one for us and one for the check-in clerk). As we walked in, we noticed that there was a bronze plaque on the wall by the elevators from the US Department of Interior that this hotel is a national landmark. The lobby is on the 2nd floor and the clerk behind the desk greeted us with, "Welcome to the Sliversmith, a landmark hotel." It is incredible to be standing in such a historic place. Everyone seems so friendly and happy to be there. The lobby is a great place to meet up with friends and other guests; plenty of couches and chairs. They even have a piano in it.

After receiving our room key, we entered the elevator with the porter, Lewis. He was all smiles and told us that we needed to use our room key to gain access to upper levels. We were in room #309. It was a king deluxe room with high ceilings and very clean. The furnishings were great. The bathroom was enormous. For an old building, it really is quiet. We barely heard the EL train. The beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows.

The fitness room has two treadmills, an eliptical machine, and a stairmaster. There is also a universal gym for strength training. It has a drinking water dispenser.

We had breadfast at ADAs which is accessed on the ground floor by the elevators. We were seated quickly and received our breakfast right away. It was tasty. We spent approximately $40 for two of us (including tip).

We loved our stay and the location is perfect. We will return when our business takes us to this part of Chicago.

Stayed here with my elderly father and wife. Great location, service and staff. We had no issues at all with noise from the railway or anything else. Great place to stay, and easy to get too. Would stay and recommend to my friends without question.

We've enjoyed a week at this hotel. The bed is very comfortable. The king size suite is quite large. All of the employees have been very polite. The location is fantastic.

Our first visit to Chicago, we had a room on the 10th floor and were not disturbed by the sound of the loop at all. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and had a good view out front. a good location to get out and about to see Chicago. Would definitely stay here again.
