I made plans to go to Chicago for the weekend of Oct. 16, 2012. Due to the Chicago Marathon, Miami vs Notre Dame football, and a large convention, rooms in town were very hard to come by. Through Travelocity I was able to get a room at the Allerton for three nights. After booking I came to Trip advisor to see reviews. As is often the case, there was a large array of opinions on this hotel. Many reviews trashed this place, saying it was horrid, while others were thrilled with their stay ... this is always a little unsettling as my mind often drifts towards the worst case scenario. At that point however, I had no choice but to proceed with my stay.
Some quick background info before my conclusion: I'm a middle class, middle aged guy who travels a good bit. I have high standards, deserning taste, and decent common sense. Obviously I prefer staying in up scale, clean, comfortable hotels whenever I travel. I can spot a dump when I see one!
The Hotel Allerton is not a dump. It's lobby and common areas are well kept and clean. The staff members are pleasant and accommodating. I stayed in a junior suite that had a small bathroom, a bedroom with two full beds, and a sitting room with a pull out sofa. It was clean, and comfortable, and there was enough space for three adults. The location is hard to beat, smack dab in the middle of Michigan Ave, close to everything, including a subway station for journeys to other parts of the city.
No the Allerton isn't the best hotel in Chicago, it's old, so I'm sure some rooms are small, also it's not super fancy or luxurious. It is however clean, respectable, reasonably priced, and in a great location. Do not hesitate staying here if you are just looking for a decent room and bed while exploring Chicago. If you're going to spend all day in your room and want pampering you should probably keep looking and prepare to spend a lot more money elsewhere.
