“Great location, terrible view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012

Don't be fooled by the picture of the view from the terrace, unless you are attending an event on the terrace, you will never see it. Since the view from our room was of an L stop, we attempted to find the terrace to enjoy the view for just a minute. We were rudely told we were not allowed, the words were very close, if not actually, "You can't go there". The girl must have realized how that sounded and added that it is only open to private events.
Everything else at the hotel was excellent. Our room was very spacious, on the concierge level, but as mentioned, we looked down on the L. Noise was not a problem.
We did not eat in the restaurant, but we did have room service and the food was very good.
The hotel is conveniently located, but not knowing my way around downtown Chicago, I found it to be a little challenging to get to and from in our rental car. My guess is that it is easier to get to when the surrounding streets are not under construction.
I rated the service average due to the terrace comment, everyone else would be very good.
The room was great, except for the view.
Even with street construction, great location.

Stayed at his hotel 2 nites August 8 and 9th. The location could not be better, right on Wacker Drive across from Marina and Trump Towers, the River Walk and steps from State Street and Michigan Avenue. The hotel is nicely designed and appointed, but staff lacks enthusiasm and customer service. Front desk was OK, not overly friendly. A smile would be nice to see. The maid basically threw new shampoos and towels on my sink and then left. Had drinks in the bar and waited forever for the drinks to come and they were not even busy. Then we waited forever to get our bill for the drinks. My biggest compaint was that when you pay over $200 for a hotel room, you expects internet access in the room. Here, you have to pay $14.95 per day extra for internet use. I tried for 2 days to get hooked up with internet and never did get it to work. I called front desk who switched me to IT and they could not even figure it out. I finally called front desk and told them to delete the internet charges from my bills since it never did work. The valet parking people were very friendly but I also think when you pay over $200 per night for a room, the valet does not need to be $55 per day. That's a lot of money to park your car. Overall, it was a comfortable room in a great location but probably would not stay there again. Chicago has many other hotels that are friendlier and a better value.

I stayed here for just a night back in June and I absolutely loved it. It was in a great location, the room was immaculate and the staff was very friendly. I would definitely stay here again and also recommend this to any friends passing through Chicago.

My husband and I stayed at the Renaissance Downtown for an extended stay with our two young daughters. Our room had a spectacular river view and was very comfortable. The concierge was particularly helpful in arranging an in-room doctor visit for myself and my older daughter, which deserves a 5-star review in itself. It can be difficult negotiating the rather small pool when other people are unable to control their children or teach them basic rules of pool safety, but our experience here was enough to convince me to book the Renaissance for any future trip to Chicago.

We enjoyed our stay in this hotel. It was very clean, the staff were extremely friendly and the queen beds were great. The view of the river was incredible. The only drawback that we had to this hotel was there was not a refrigerator / microwave.

Room Tip: Pick the River view rooms. It is worth the extra price. Lots of people complained about the ambula...

We arrived 4 hours before check in time. The front desk staff accommodated us quickly and managed to find a room for us. We used the concierge service for our dinner choice and directions. The restaurant suggested was perfect for our family - 16 year old girl and 7 year old boy! Excellent service from everyone at the hotel!

I had thought the Renaissance in Chicago would be another run of the mill Marriott group down town hotels with a modernisation requirement and reactive service - but - I was wrong. All the open areas of the hotel have been decorated in a modern style and the bar + restaurant is all in good condition, modern decor serving good food and drinks. Service is friendly and professional (could be moved up a notch in some areas, especially around the reception but in general its fine).

The rooms are pretty spacious, nicely decorated in a modern style and the bathrooms are larger than average. My bed was very comfortable and I enjoyed the room during my stay (it was on the back end of an international trip so I was getting pretty picky about things - so that's a positive).

Location is great, just on the river.

Executive club is larger than normal, with good service and great views over the river.

Gym is well equipped, has pool and sauna.

All in all a good hotel in a good location. If you are looking for a relaxing and good stay in downtown chicago at a solid 4 star hotel then this is a good pick.
