“A Fine Time in The Windy City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013

Just fun and cool is the best way to describe the place. has a great vibe. Rooms themselves are less on the luxury side and more an expression of Ian. Nightlife on the property is also unique with a 4star restaurant that dazzles.

Thank you for your review and I am pleased that you enjoyed the Pump Room and bars especially on our busy weekend.

Please visit us during the week as our restaurants and bars are still lively but not as busy as the typical weekends.

Also, for your information our parking rates are competitive with other Chicago hotels.

We hope to see you again soon!

There is a lot to admire about The Public. As mentioned the public spaces are quite nice. The lobby is lovely and the restaurant is top notch. They provide free coffee in the lobby in the AM and the wifi is solid and free (if a bit slow).

I even thought the location was perfect (not sure why some reviewers complained about the location, but I suppose it truly depends on where you want to stay...as Chicago is quite large, but you are really near everything without being in the heart of everything). Another plus, the staff was charming and helpful (mostly).

The downside is definitely the room. In fact, if I was to rate the hotel on rooms alone, this would be a 3 star review. The space is very white/modern, but a little cheap feeling. Bed was just okay. Not enough outlets for true business traveler (and outlets were in far flung places...i.e. hard to reach). The AC unit was loud and it never seemed to be able to keep the room at a steady temp (wayyy too hot or too cold...not great for 200 bucks per night) and in a terrible place (under the work desk).

In short, if you can get this hotel on a cheap rate and are just visiting for fun, you should stay here. If you are here for business beyond a day or two, I would suggest looking at other options.

This boutique hotel in Chicago is in a gorgeous neighborhood & fairly priced. However, I have a few complaints: lighting not very good, so women doing make up might have trouble.i am not a fashionista or make up maiden by any accounts, but for those who like to be done up, this might be a problem. Also, no alarm clock, only a wall clock with no numbers....? I like to know what time it is when I wake up in the middle of the night. #3... No coffee maker. I like coffee in the morning with out paying $12 to have it delivered to my room. Other than that, this is a nice place to stay and a nice alternative to the big and places. If they would just make a few tweaks, they could be five stars.

Im a road warrior and I was excited to stay at the Public. Huge disappointment.

The lobby area is beautiful and inviting however there are so many things I do not like about the hotel. I will NEVER come back.

The rooms are small making this a very overpriced hotel for what you get. The bathrooms even smaller. There is no counter space to put anything. Blow dryers stink. The full length mirror is on the back of the super small bathroom door -- who thought of that ...why not on the other side of the door.

Not a single clock in the room. Except the huge one on the wall which I later realized is not a functioning clock just decoration i think-- wth -- The drawers for storing clothes are on the floor. There are limited plugs albeit one by the bed about 6" off the floor which is nice but when you go to iron there no space where any plug is located to iron. The iron -- so cheap -- leaked ruining my silk shirt.

The staff pretentious. And let me finish off -- I stayed on the third floor and it took FOREVER to get an elevator. very frustrating.

The hotel is very cool / hip in design. The staff is great, and the rooms are very well designed. There are a few minor issues that stopped me making this a 5 star rating -
1. Paper thin walls. You can hear everything. I woke up startled several times thinking someone was opening the door to realize it was the next door room (I almost never get woken up by sound, very heavy sleeper).
2. The window shades are way too light. If you need a dark room to sleep, this is not the place for you.
On the other hand, there are many positives - the pump room has amazing breakfast and turns into a great bar. The design of the place overall is very nice. Also, the TV died on us

This hotel is chic, modern and centrally located (Gold Coast). I stayed here with girlfriends for a bachelorette party and it was amazing. We had a decent sized suite that had a couch, chair and dining table. The bedroom was in a separate room with small bath (overall quite small). It was perfect for our group. The location is great; walking distance or short cab ride to everything (rush street, shopping, downtown, lake). The Pump Room is a bar/restaurant/lounge in the hotel that's great for dinner or drinks. You might even spot a few celebs as you stroll through the lobby! Overall, although its on the small side and quite pricey you're paying for experience and location.
