“Great start to our stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013 via mobile

Clive was a God-send and very professional during a very tough trip. Jose also stood out with great customer service. Kudos to both of them. Even putting us in newly renovated rooms was a nice touch. The only issue would probably not being in a deluxe room like we had anticipated.

We were in town for a hockey game and stayed at the Intercontinental and could not complain about a thing. We had requested two rooms with double beds but they were not able to fulfill that request, so they had two rooms next to each other lined up for us. We wanted to get a roll-away into the room but he was honest and said it would be too tight. He upgraded us to a junior suite for no additional fee and it worked out perfectly.

The rooms were very clean, had plenty of space and the beds/pillows were extremely comfortable. Will visit this property again.

Elijah checked us in promptly with a great smile and a super attitude. The room was clean and spacious, and had a great view. The history of this hotel is well worth the 10 minute self guided by ipod tour up the first 7 stories of this very interesting building. The front Bell staff, excellent, the service staff in the wine and cheese lounge, along with Jordan's steakhouse were all very friendly. A Starbucks in the lobby, and a great location on Michigan Ave, who could ask for more!

Room Tip: Ask about the newly renovated rooms about to open in the next several weeks

We stayed 3 nights at the InterContinental Chicago in February, 2013. The hotel's location made it a good base of operations for a weekend of sightseeing in the city and the rate we got made it a solid value. I'd start by saying that we had a very nice stay and didn't encounter any reason not to stay there in the future, provided that the price is right. That being said, the hotel missed on a few points that wouldn't have me excluding other options in downtown Chicago.

The hotel is in an older building that has been rennovated. The upside to this is that the outside of the building and some of the public areas are unique and you don't have the "cookie-cutter" hotel feel. The downside is that you get the limitations that an older building provides. This means that the rooms are a little on the small end, especally the bathrooms. My wife and I had plenty of room for the two of us and our carry-on bags, but you can get more space for your money. The decor in the hallways and rooms seems a little dated, and there were a few signs of age such as peeling wallpaper, worn carpets and floors, and signs of wear in the tub. The heating system in our room was a little fussy, although it did do well agianst the frigid temperatures we were dealing with outside. A small adjustment made the room quickly go from too cool to too hot and back. The same was true of the temperature control for the shower.

My other issue with the hotel was a couple of extra charges that I felt were unneccessary. There is a $15 per day charge for internet access, whether on the unit provided in the room or if you want wi-fi access for your own device. Speaking of the room access unit, ours had an annoying habit of turning itself on in the middle of the night and waking us up. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason for this and we never could get the thing to completely turn off.

They also charge $12 per day for access to the fitness center or you can pay $16 to use it for the duration of your stay. While I was annoyed to have to pay, the fitness center is well-equipped with cardio equipment on the downstairs level and a very nice selection of weight machines and free weights on the upstairs level. The pool area is very impresssive and at least worth stopping in to take a look.

We didn't have too many interactions with the staff, but found them to be helpful and knowledgable when we did have a question or a request. The concierge gave our friends a great suggestion for dinner the night we arrived. When we requested a humidifier for our room, it was up in under 5 minutes. The desk staff at check-in and check-out were very friendly and efficient as well.

The hotel offers a number of dining options, which could be a nice convenience. The Starbucks in the lobby is the experience you'd get at any of the chain's locations, but has plenty of seating and free wi-fi if you don't want to pay the hotel fee. Our friends greatly enjoyed the wine bar, Eno, although we never made it down there. We had the breakfast buffet the day we checked out and found it to be nicely done and reasonably priced. The made-to-order omlettes were very good as was the bakery.

As I said at the start, the hotel's best feature is its location, which is right in the middle of the "Magnificent Mile." This made walking, bus or the El, or taking a cab quick and convenient. Because of that, I'd stay here again if the price was right. If the rate went up, I'd probably look around a little first.

I've stayed in many "world-class" hotels in Chicago but I have to say this has been by far my best stay yet. I had never experienced such warmth and good service and the staff exceeded all my expectations.

I stayed at the Historic Tower, an insanely beautiful building from the late 20's. I'd heard from a friend about how magnificent the hotel was so I decided to stay there for my last visit. My room and my view were hard to believe for the price I payed and Front Office Manager Brisceida Medrano made sure my stay was nothing less than perfect. She's definitely the best F/O manager in the world!

If you stay at IH don't forget to take a swim at the pool, or at least visit. It's out of this world! I regret not having the spare time to do so but I definitely will on my next visit. And finally, the hotel is in the middle of absolutely everything. Walking distance from all the attractions. You'll love it.

The service we received at this hotel was top-notch. We wanted a last minute getaway to the city, and this was the perfect place. The room was outstanding, with a view of Michigan Avenue. We had dinner in Michael Jordan's steakhouse in the hotel, and both the food and the service there were great. I only wish we could have stayed longer! Tina Novakovich was especially helpful and made sure that everything was just as we wanted. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to visit Chicago and be right in the heart of Michigan Avenue.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a view of Michigan Avenue.
