Each December for the last 24 years (no joke) I've spent 3-4 nights in early December at the Hyatt Regency Chicago for an industry conference. Because the conference is large the room rates are excellent, so it's quite a value. The location of this hotel is nearly ideal; close to Michigan Avenue, Navy Pier, the museums, etc. I enjoy walking, so the proximity to Michigan Avenue is a real plus.
During the last few years, many of the rooms in the East Tower have been renovated, and I stayed in one this year. It was comfortable, clean, quiet, and functional. Apparently starting in mid-Dec. the entire East Tower will be closed for further renovation, and many of the hotel functions will be moved to the West Tower until March or so.
During the last 24 years, quality of this hotel has been consistently very good, but a weakness in recent years has been the lack of a high-quality restaurant on the premises because of renovations to the space formerly occupied by their restaurant ("Stetson's", I believe). I understand that once the renovations are complete, another high-quality restaurant will open there.
Another weakness has been the elevators which in some years have had problems handling the volume of guests. This year they functioned without a hitch.
Through the years, the staff has been consistently helpful, cheery, and capable--everyone, from the doormen, wait staff, front desk, concierge, room cleaners, etc. They are one consistent reason for my looking forward to the annual visit.
I look forward to next December, when all the renovations will be complete.
Room Tip: Consider paying an extra $15 or so for a room upgrade.

Thank you for your recent review on TripAdvisor for Hyatt Regency Chicago. I'm glad you choose to stay at our downtown Chicago hotel for the conference that brings you to Chicago in December. With the renovations unveiling in April 2013, you will see a great improvement to the overall atmosphere of our East Tower lobby. We can't wait to show it to you. Stetson's restaurant has opened - just yesterday! - as Stetsons Modern Steak + Sushi...and it's worth a visit. We look forward to hearing your thoughts come next December and hope you enjoy the hotel even more than you do now! Cheers!
