“Very disappointing experience despite free parking and good location”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

Needing a hotel convenient to Lake Shore Dr. for a family funeral next day, we booked a night's stay at this "HoJo" due to the  location and free downtown parking, We wished we'd instead returned to  the "Best Western River North" which also offers free parking but has much better appointed, very clean rooms,  even though we found on a prior stay there that it was rather noisy from the early morning garbage truck traffic  at the nearby MacDonald's.

So we chose Hojo (despite somewhat higher cost for our desired date!) for greater potential quiet, even tho  TripAdvisor reviews led us to keep our expectations about the decor and even cleanliness low.  In that we were not "disappointed":  the bathroom in our Hojo room had mold growing in the corners & tile grout, the furniture was rather "bunged up" & the bedside light did not work.  Still, we were happy with the front desk staff that we dealt with initially, as the light got "fixed" (by a  maintenance man who had to move a bed & crawl on the floor to plug it back in!) & the woman who checked us in offered us a choice of rooms, with tips as to which would get least street noise.  We were pleased by the strong Wifi signal (poor  or non-functioning during our stay at the Best Western) & accepted the conditions  until  two things happened during the night.

First, the sheets are too small for the double beds & when I, staying up later than my husband, tried to get under the covers, I faced a tangle of untucked linen & wide swath of bare mattress.   What a mess. Finally I settled into sleep but was then at 3 a.m. awakened by loud pounding & louder angry cursing just a few yards away--& soon my husband & teenager (which takes some doing) were also awake.  I went out to check on the commotion -- which went on about 45 min. until things had settled down again.  A young couple (wearing college shirts which they shamed) had returned drunk, & a "friend" sharing their room had locked  & refused to open the door.  Upon my call security came & talked to them awhile in the hall (the woman lying on the floor demanding action & the man still cursing).  At my insistence  security finally took them to the office, tho we heard them all the way through the courtyard. About 10 min. later we heard 2 people leave that room & quickly depart by car & soon after that the noisy couple returned, still talking loudly.

Next morning (little sleep) the management said it was a "church group" that had caused the troub!e. Asked for recompense,  he gave us $50 refund--but the room still cost over $100--& he lightly dismissed the sheet problem that I also then mentioned.  Even if he couldn't be faulted for the couple's behavior, the booking of a gender mixed group in one room was apparently ill-advised and the security guard should have immediately realized the issue and removed the couple to the office to give them another room if possible.  And the hotel should use larger sheets and clean up the mold and mildew and get staff to leave lights plugged in. Never again:  DOUBLE NO to Hojo.

The Inn has been around forever and looks it. A well kept secret destination for someone who travels but likes to have their car near them and doesn't need to be pampered. The rooms are in need of a makeover, but they are clean (though there is a slight odor of age when you enter). The water is hot and the shower runs well and they give you plenty of towels and washcloths. The motel is secure. An attendant greets every vehicle coming into the lot after 8PM. There is a classic breakfast and lunch diner attached to the motel that is known for its value and basic meals.

A friend and I stayed here in July. It was good for what we needed. The staff were friendly and check in was quick and easy. The beds were comfy and the bathroom was clean. The was a little street noise but this didn't bother us, although the air con was noisy. It was spacious enough for two people and we both had a double bed. The only negative is the bathroom door was a bit stiff! All amenities were available, tea, coffee, ice bucket and toiletries. There was also plenty of towels. There was free parking which we only used on the day we were leaving but didn't have a problem getting a space. Whilst going to collecting the car we were able to leave our luggage at reception with no problem. We were able to walk or get the subway to everything we needed to see. There is also a 7/eleven around the corner.

We stayed over Saturday night, and the total bill with tax was about $100. With free parking, that's a screaming bargain for this part of Chicago. I'd give it 3 stars without the location. The place is kind of old, and shows many signs of fix-up, repainting, etc. but it was clean, everything worked and we got a good night's sleep. Note about the free parking: there are 40 spots for 71 rooms, so check in early and leave your car there. It's a cheap cab ride or easy walk (if the weather's nice) to Michigan Ave, or a short walk to the Red Line subway. We didn't eat in the cafe, there are way too many great restaurants in the neighborhood.

Room Tip: We stayed in the "A" section which is a small cul-de-sac of only 4 rooms per level. Didn...

For the price of this place, you are really getting a great deal. Just far away enough from the massive crowds of the Magnificent Mile, but close enough to walk to most attractions. The building is old and a little creepy, but the staff are nice and the rooms are clean.

If you're looking for a luxury and pampered experience, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a place to sleep and shower than this place is the best you will get for the money.
