“Concierge is the best thing about this hotel...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

Courteous helpful staff. Robert Brooks, the concierge, was invaluable in answering all kinds of questions. He is a rock star!

Room Tip: Ask for river view on a high floor- the El is quite loud.

Stayed here for 5 nights recently for a conference; don't usually stay at Holiday Inns, though I'm not opposed to budget chains by any means, usually prefer Hampton Inns, but I digress.

I had spent a lot of time on the website trying to determine what the hotel itself looked like, having spent a lot of time in Chicago. When I realized the website didn't really show an actual exterior photo of the hotel, I knew something was amiss. The hotel is UGLY--in fact, some friends took a guided Chicago river tour and the guide said that the building was voted the "most depressing" in the city. We pulled up to the front door, and they didn't have a valet; we were directed to the parking lot below and had to park in an open air lot. After hauling our suitcases up a flight of stairs, we entered the "hotel" only to realize the hotel is actually the top few stories of a larger building that contained businesses, a commuter college, etc. This was a painfully annoying part of the hotel--taking multiple elevators every day just to get out of the hotel.

Check in was painless, the staff was actually very good. They were able to switch my room to a king size and had a river view, which was nice. Every day, the staff members were very friendly when you walked by.

Rooms: I had a single occupancy with a king sized bed. There was a couch, desk, small LCD tv, and decent sized restroom. The ac/heater was a window unit, and was very loud. I didn't even turn it on at night because it kept me up. Speaking with other people in the hotel, I know this was a common issue. One thing that should definitely be brought up--the towels in the bathroom were AWFUL. Pretty much hand towels 2mm thick and starched to the max.

Also, we didn't eat any meals in the actual restaurant in the hotel, but we were there for a conference where they served breakfast and lunch daily. The breakfast was decent, and the lunches were pretty gross--good thing there is a Chipotle, mall food court, Steve's Deli, etc nearby.

Location: There are places closer to Michigan Ave that would be better. This hotel is kind of a hike from the "Mile," though it is walkable. I would only consider this hotel again if I was really looking to save some money.

Room Tip: Try to get a view of the river.

Dear Recent Guest,

We appreciate your review. While we agree, there are better looking buildings in Chicago, most of our guests can see the extensive renovations that we have completed in the last couple of years and are pleased. Once you are inside our hotel lobby and our guest rooms, we agree again. Our views of the Chicago Skyline are unmatched. We will share your positive comments regarding our staff and service and do hope that you will visit us again soon.

Well we went to Chicago by train from Milwaukee just to see how easy it was. It was incredibly easy and fun. We stayed at this holiday inn because it was in walking distance from the station. You must ask for a corner room, The view was great! Tons of windows. We ate a couple blocks away at Lou Malnati's deep dish, it was awesome! At 805 S. State, Okay it was a bit of a walk but after that pizza you need it. The corner stores are fine for getting togo wine and what not and the concierge of course was very helpful. Taxi is best mode of transport but, plenty of buses flying around everything is close if your into lots of walking and you can rent bikes, no snow, but too cold. All in all a great place to stay, comfortable, quiet and great view! Lots, of course to do all over!

Room Tip: Must ask for corner suite well worth it!

As a platinum priority club member (which offers some advantages because we use holiday inn so much) I am used to some upgrades and a few special services, which this hotel staff did not seem to honor. Our room with a view was nice, but nothing like the ones in the pictures. We requested a fridge in. Our room, which we were told would be there upon check in...it was not. My husband and I each called the front desk and were told it was.on its way. I finally went to the desk stating my sons milk had been out for over two hours. The woman there seemed surprised we had been promised this service and said she would do it "this time" only. The concierge was very friendly and helpful, as were the cleaning crew. I don't have a lot to say about the rest of the staff. Not too helpful or knowledgable. Good location. The constant sound of the L running every 10 minutes all night long was a bit to get used too. I would stay here again, just be very diligent about making sure my needs are met.

i thought I'd stayed in just about every hotel in downtown Chicago, until I found this little gem. I searched solely on location to meetings I was attending over 2 days on North Wacker Drive, and wanted to be able to walk if possible. I found the Holiday Inn - Mart Plaza and was very impressed. It seems like a newer hotel, and I didn't even know it was there until now. It is very clean, Bath and Body Works amenities, awesome Asian/Italian restaurant on-site, which was very convenient and both the restaurant and hotel staff were super friendly. Wi-fi was free, parking with in-out priveleges was $39/day, typical for downtown hotels. The location is a bit off the beaten path, so to speak, but I felt comfortable walking around. It is right on the river across the street from the Loop. I would definitely stay here again.

Holiday Inn Mart plaza was a true bargain in a good location in chicago. I drove there with my 3 young nephews to show them the city. We walked everywhere with ease and had in/out parking priviledges ($38) per day parking (high, but actually a better deal than other hotels). The room was clean, comfortable and big enough to fit a couple twin air mattresses on the floor so that we were all able to camp in the same room in comfort. It was close to public transportation tho we only used the L for the sheer excitement of riding public transportation. The pool looked nice too but we didn't have enough spare time to enjoy it. Hotel clerks were pleasant and we had a quick response to a problem with our shower the first night (at 10pm no less....a plumber was there in 15 minutes!) concierge was great too.

Room Tip: Higher rooms are more interesting and better chance of a nice view. The elevators are plentiful and...

The concierge Robert was really good with helping us get around the city. We had no clue where anything was but his directions and tips helped us a lot. We were able to make the most of our trip with his help. He was able to answer every question we had and gave us a pass that got us to the front of the line at a pizza place that had an extremely long line which was very nice.
