“Grand but getting a bit tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013 via mobile

Given a top floor room with views over Lake Michegan, even though we had only reserved a non-lake view. This superb view really overcame any other niggles.
Room was large, with a safe and more electrical sockets than I have ever seen in a hotel! However, it was a bit tired, with wallpaper peeling off, paint chipped and bathroom furniture, which whilst clean and working, had obviously seen a good few years service.
The main restaurant was closed for some reason and the menu at the 'grill' was very limited, so we ate out.

Overall hotel was wonderful. Our room was huge. There was trouble with the heating unit and room was very warm. Security came and cracked the window open to get some relief. Hotel is within walking to distance to shopping and public transportation stops are right outside the door. Breakfast was very expensive, $16 I think for an omelet. However the Travelodge is across the side street and had a food at a great value and you could use their internet for free. Internet was an extra charge at the Congress.

Let me list the bad things first. The rooms are tiny. I stayed three nights and the room didn't get cleaned. When I called the front desk, I was told that because I asked for extra towels, that meant I didn't want the room cleaned. Have you ever heard of that? The hotel is a landmark and sadly it isn't being upgraded in the manner that the architecture deserves. I could have done a better job installing the bathroom tiles. And the grout was dirty. Ugh. You have to pay about $10/day extra for Internet. You can print your boarding pass for free downstairs. However, when I needed to print my boarding pass in a timely manner so I could get a decent seat on Southwest Airlines, the computer was down. It took a while for someone to come and fix it which was bothersome. But other than those two incidents, the personnel was pleasant and helpful. My advice is to find another hotel. This one is just awful.

We always stay at the Congress when we are in Chicago because it is close to everything we love there. Yeah, it's old and kinda strangely laid-out (probably due to age and renovations), but we like its quirkiness and you absolutely can not beat the price in the loop. They have a great family suite that suits us to a T!

I used a Groupon to select the Congress Hotel in Chicago, IL. The location is GREAT! Walking distance to so many things, including public transportation. The room was large in size, adequately appointed, comfortable bed and pretty quiet, even though our room was facing Michigan Avenue. The staff was pleasant and courteous. The Hotel has its charm, but I LOVE architecture, and especially the old style. Give it a try, you'll be glad you did!

My wife and I booked here many months in advance. We wanted a place not too far a cab ride from Union Station but near interesting places we could walk to during the one evening we had in Chicago. We only found out upon arriving that the Lollapallooza Festival was going on in the park across the street. This did make for a crowded hotel and elevators, and some late partying in the halls but we still enjoyed our stay.

The rooms have very high ceilings and are not recently furnished but all was fine.

Had a beautiful evening walking by Millenium Park and the fountains and almost too many restaurant options. An enjoyable stay the night before our rail trip out west.

Room Tip: So crowded in the morning that we were there, we took the elevator up even when going down to cut th...

I stayed here for one night on 21 August, 2013 with my 6 year old son. We needed somewhere safe and central for the night before flying out of OHare the next day. We loved the hotel, grand example of fine architecture and history, Our room was of ample sie, with a bed that could have slept 3 people.W e had colour TV, bathroom and tea& coffee making facilities. We didn't use the restaurant but did go to the bar, they have a fab dukebox and the staff were really pleasant. I would recommend this hotel and stay here again on future visits.
