“Great location, great service, great value.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

Myself and my wife stayed in the hotel from Sat 26th April to Wednesday 30th April and was extremely impressed. We started the journey from the airport dreading what we might arrive to, after reading some of the negative reviews of the hotel. When we pulled up outside we were relived and happy we'd chosen a hotel in such a fantastic location for the North side of Chicago. The front desk staff greeted us with a smile, gave us a full run down of the facilities, local attractions and other ways in which she could help us. The ultimate relief was free Wi-Fi! (Very sad but a service we were not provided at the Skyline Hotel in New York). We stayed on the 6th floor and although the view wasn't great, we had a very clean and tidy room. The room could do with a bit of modernising, also it was fairly dimly lit, especially the bathroom. The adjoining Brasserie serves great food, reasonably priced drinks and provided excellent service. Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Chicago.

The location is great but that's about the only good thing. Rooms and bed are small. The front desk attendants are very rude. I forgot my credit card at home when checked in and the man working front desk seemed very annoyed when I tried a debit card. I got the cash to cover incidentals but he made it seem very unacceptable. I was outside, right by the front door, getting fresh air when I was approached by a very large man for money. I told the front desk and the employee said"let me get this straight you were outside, approached by someone not inside our building?and what do you want me to do about that??" He didnt care that I felt scared he made me seem rather stupid.

We found this place on the internet and it was just great. A small high rise among the giant buildings of Michigan Avenue and it was just perfect. We stayed on the 14th floor, with a great view. We were within walking distance of many things. They offered several free shuttles to many locations. Their French restaurant was wonderful. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Pool is on the 4th floor

The hotel, whilst having fantastic facilities and helpful staff, was rife with bedbugs. The bed itself was also on an angle, which, coupled with the bed bugs led to a terrible nights sleep. This detracted from our experience and ensured that we wouldn't stay here again. Such a shame as the location was ideal.

We came with a groupon and with taxes, etc. it cost $221 for two people - two nights, including 2 tickets for the Field Museum. The location was good for sightseeing - only a block walk to a bus, cabs to the door (though they were fairly expensive - Science and Industry to Hotel was $18). There is a shuttle that goes one-way to locations, but make sure you get there on time. Once they are full you are on your own for transportation. Staff is very friendly and helpful. It was nice that the vanity is separate from the tub/shower/commode area, so two people can get ready at the same time. The room itself was comfortable with a few small issues. One chair at the desk, so staff brought a folding chair so we could both sit and read. Reading in bed not an option as the wierd lights attached to the bed were very dim. Lobby entrance is clean and welcoming. The upper levels of the hotel is a bit dated, but very clean. There is free Wi-Fi, but could not always connect, due to server issues. There is an inside entrance to a pricey restaurant, The Brassiere, and there is an Irish Pub across the street at the Hilton. Millenium Park is across the street. All in all, for Chicago, a nice choice.

We got off the train at 10:30am and decided to see if our room was ready. We got there and it was. Not the greatest view (the pool) but really we werent there for the view!! Beds were comfy so were the pillows. Good size room. I booked through Priceline and got the room including tax and fees for 75$! Can't beat that price.

We booked a weekend at the Essex for my husband's birthday. We wanted a hotel on Michigan Avenue, close to everything, with a nice pool and fitness center, near a lot of restaurants, that offered downtown shuttle service, and was near CTA service. It also had to be quiet, clean, and comfortable. This hotel DEFINITELY fit our extensive needs.

Check-in was very fast, and the staff was wonderful. The luggage service was great for us weary travelers. We requested a quiet room; all rooms are quiet, but we were going to be out late and did not want to wake families with small children when we walked down the hall. Everyone on our floor was around our age and quiet. There were lots of families, but it was nice that our request was handled so well. The walls to the rooms are really thick, anyway, which is a rarity in modern hotels.

The pool was very well maintained, and even had a lifeguard on duty at 7am! The fitness room was also in good condition. The housekeeping staff replenished the toiletries for us so that we never ran out of shampoo, conditioner, and body-wash. Even the room service had some of the most reasonable room service prices I had ever seen (for room service rates, mind you.) The beds were super-comfortable, and the sounds of the city were blocked out by the thick walls.

The desk staff was very helpful when it came to our stay, too. They stored our luggage after we checked out, free of charge, so that we could continue to explore the city before leaving for home. Their complimentary shuttle was perfect for us after days of tramping through museums, parks, and department stores; we saved a ton on cab and "L" fares by using the shuttle. The location is so close to so many items of interest one hardly needs the shuttle, anyway.

The Brassiere restaurant in the lobby was delightful, but a bit pricey for our regular dining budget. It was a more upscale eatery than we typically visit, but it is worth the splurge. Luckily, Essex Inn guests get a discount at Buddy Guy's Legends, which is right around the corner and a best-kept secret of Chicago!

The only drawback to this hotel was that there was not a full-time concierge and our hall's décor was a little dated. There was also a dent in our door that needed repair. But these are very small details. Staying anywhere on the loop is going to be a little pricey, but this place is the best value around. We got way more amenities than most of the upscale hotels such as Hilton or Radisson, at a price that was far more economical. Every demographic will like this hotel.

Room Tip: The staff tries to adhere to unique guest requests. We had a late night planned, so we explained th...
