“good base to see Chicago”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2014

Stayed here for 2 nights it was clean and the hotel had a shuttle bus that took you to most of the sights which saved us using the public transport. The staff were very helpful and polite. We did eat next door and the food was good with polite staff.

My husband and I stayed here for a night with a Groupon deal.  At $100, this place was much more affordable than the other hotels on Michigan Ave.  The location was great: walking distance from the museums, the L-Train, and downtown attractions.  Our room and the lobby were clean and updated with modern furnishings.  The only downside was the bathroom's small size, with a tub that was slow to drain, but we didn't really care because we spent little time in our room.  The staff was helpful and polite, and check-in/check-out were quick and easy.  I'd return.

If you are looking to stay at Essex Inn and want to use the Kid's Rule package offered on their website, buyer beware! There is no $199 price for this package. You must buy a room for $239.00, and, if your children are 10 and 9, will be charged an extra $20.00 because of their age. Grand total? $259.00 for the package! Interestingly, front desk manager had never heard of Kids Rule promotional package. Needless to say, I cancelled my reservation!

Small rooms, a bit out-dated and bring your own pillows because their's are bad. Aside from that, it's a conveniently located hotel with a very nice staff and a decent price! We will definitely consider the Essex Inn again!

Pros: clean rooms, comfortable beds, a short walk to Millenium Park, a nice lobby & indoor pool, and friendly staff.

Cons: the price was almost $200 USD with taxes (hotel costs were unusally high the weekend I I stayed, since it was St. Patrick's Day weekend and the Home & Garden show), it's a little far from everything else besides Millenium Park, the elevators are painfully slow, and the cleaning staff would often not re-stock/re-fill items (e.g. washclothes or soap).

If you end up staying here, it will be fine; you won't be disappointed, but won't be that impressed either. However, on a less busy weekend, there are better Chicago hotels that are closer to everything.

I will definitely stay in this hotel again. It's location, just across the road from Grant Park, and close to many places of interest, is great. Journey from O'Hare Airport straightforward - Blue Line to Washington then Red Line to Harrison. Check-in was warm and friendly. My room was spacious, clean, comfortable and quiet and equipped with a good-sized safe that took my laptop easily. The swimming pool was marked out to enable families with children to play and keen swimmers to do laps. It was great to be able to have a swim after a long flight. I only stayed one night. Next time I'm in Chicago I'll stay longer.
