“Great Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

Great hotel for the price. Some things to keep in mind. You are in Chicago, in the loop. $41 parking is standard for valet service in hotels I've stayed at in the area. This is an older building so yes it is not brand new. You are not getting the Waldorf at a discount rate. If you are expecting a room and bathroom the size of your house and the other things I mentioned bother you look elsehwere.

If you are looking for a nice, clean, well run hotel for a family stay at a reasonable price this is the place for you. Great views, friendly staff, perfect location. This is a great hotel for those who care less about their hotel feeling like a fancy house, and don't mind it feeling like, I don't know, a hotel room. If you care more about a great location, value, and comfort as opposed to having a 500 sq ft bathroom, Essex Inn is perfect. Rooms are decent size, yes the bathrooms are a bit small, but come on it's a bathroom, do you really need it to be that big?

This will definitely be our first choice for a hotel when we visit Chicago (which we hope to do often). And we will definitely recommend this hotel to others.

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms on the corners have great views and windows on two sides.

We stayed here on a recent tour of Route 66. Hotel is very well located. Food in restaurant is good, stack of pancakes at breakfast is to die for! Very friendly & helpful restaurant staff. From what we saw, the accommodation areas od the hotel appeared a little tired although our room was clean & just fine for a couple of nights.

stayed here over thanksgiving. we had a lovely corner room that was super clean. we had a fridge which was great for stashing drinks and leftover pizza--there's a lou malnoti's a few blocks away. yes, you can see and hear the el from the room but we lived next to tracks for years so it's kinda soothing. we were unaware the window opens but we sure found out when ferocious wind blew it open at 2am!
really, our only problem was we were quoted on the phone a special rate for hybrid cars but the valet guy said this didn't apply. there's a nearby lot that's way cheaper. you might even see it from your room.
we did take the free shuttle to museum campus but walked back. if you go to art institute and need to buy a ticket, lineup outside door on the left.

We were treated nicely - lobby is being renovated right now, so it can become a bit crowded in front of the desk. Service ("more coffee please!") was great - they even brought it to the room.
Great pool and fitness area. Rooms are not brandnew, but ok.
Parking fee is high - but it is the loop in Chicago after all. We could remotely hear the L. ("How often does the train go by?" - "So often you won't even notice...")
It is wonderfully located on Michigan right across Grant Park - we will probably stay there again.
Really reasonable (even including the valet parking fee) for a downtown hotel.

Room Tip: The obvious: Higher is better, suites face the park/lake, rooms to the East (even numbers) face the...

SUPER RUDE customer service. Very dusty room. TINY bathroom. EXPENSIVE PARKING FEE=$41 I will never ever visit this hotel anymore. Never ever will suggest this to any of my friend. When I stayed in this hotel, the lobby is renovated. Superr dusty and bad-looking! Even the man who is in charge in parking area was very rude. Old building. I will never ever forget this terrible experience!

Thank you for taking the time to fill out a guest survey based on your recent stay with us. I am sorry to hear that you had a negative experienced at our property. I have taken this opportunity to review your comments about the service you received with our team. Here at Chicago’s Essex Inn, we are very customer service orientated and usually receive accolades from our guests. I am extremely disappointed about the way they presented their selves and I assure you that we are taking your feedback to heart and working harder to make sure that they are providing the service one would expect to receive every time.

I have taken the opportunity to private message you in hopes that you are willing to take some time out of your busy day to reference your stay with us. Again, I am sorry for any challenges that you experienced during your stay and I hope you will allow us another opportunity to serve you!

Every so often I have business at the Chicago Hilton, but I kind of like staying at the Essex instead because it's less of a mob scene. My only complaint is that there is no way to run the heating fan without heat, just to have to "white noise" in the room.

Room Tip: Go as high as you can.

Great location, right on Michigan Ave. Bus stop(CTA) on the corner to get you closer to Millenium Park and Magnificient Mile. Few blocks to the El. First time visitors to Chicago (other than just passing thru)~found we absolutely did not need a car.(the price to park cars in this town is huge). We used the bus, El, subway, etc. And our feet :-).Very easy to hop the El at the airport, get off at the Roosevelt station, and walk to the hotel. Fabulous deep dish pizza just a few blocks away. Not far to a Trader Joe's, and 24 hour chain drug stores. All places to help stock your room fridge. Room was decent. Bathroom was the smallest I've been in, with a miniscule sink outside the bathroom (toilet and tub). Pool was enjoyable, but does not have a hot tub. Lifeguard on duty. Lovely veranda, outside pool area, overlooking Michigan Avenue. Grant Park across the street. Walked to Lake Michigan, Buckingham fountain, and then on to Millenium. Enjoyable walk, but the bus system would get you there faster, of course. Hubby walked back from the Museum campus twice~I opted to ride the bus with dtr. He beat us back. Worth investing in the multi-day transit ticket (bus, subway, El,etc). Guess what I am trying to say is that with this location, you have your options. Did not eat at the restaurant here, but there are multiple options nearby. We had a lovely buffet breakfast next door at the Hilton. Concierge/Bellman was very friendly/helpful. I was initially leery(bought from an opaque site), but, after experiencing The Essex Inn, I would stay here again. We walked in the daytime, we walked at night, and felt safe.

Room Tip: If willing to part with more dollars for a better view, reserve a room with a view of Grant Park an...
