My husband and I just returned from a wonderful stay at The Flemish House of Chicago. This is a lovely mansion in a great,
convenient-to-everything neighborhood and the accommodation is gracious and comfortable. I highly recommend staying here.

We spent 4 nights at the Flemish House and loved every minute. The whole house is beautifully decorated, extremely clean and well maintained. We were made to feel welcome and right at home. We we're on the third floor at the front, which is a spacious enough 'apartment' type of accommodation with everything you could need. It really felt like we lived in Chicago. Breakfast is provided with some delicious muffins!

The location too is fabulous - right in the Gold Coast, which means it's just 5 minutes walk to the beach, 10 minutes walk to the Magnificent Mile and John Hancock Building. At the end of the street there are plenty of high quality restaurants and bars, as well as fabulous shops, though the street remains quiet and undisturbed by the nightlife. It is quite a walk to the nearest metro station, but it's not a problem as most things are within walking distance, and there are hundreds of taxis!

If we ever return to Chicago we would without a doubt stop here.

  • Liked — Location, maintained/decorated to v.high standard, comfortable and friendly
  • Disliked — Nothing
  • Tips/Secrets — Recommend French Restaurant on Rush St (5 min walk away).

My wife and I went to Chicago for our anniversary. We wanted a location downtown in Chicago so we could get around without a car. This bed and breakfast was just the ticket. We arrived at 10 o'clock at night in this wonderful neighborhood. Our taxi dropped us off, and we found our way to our room. Totally spacious. A very large living room with a bay window overlooked the street. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we could need. The refrigerator had orange juice, milk, freshly ground coffee, breads, etc waiting for us for breakfast. The bedroom was nice. Not too big. A little difficult to maneuver around. Nice bathroom. Odd thing was the only soap they had was Dial liquid soap in Dial soap dispensers. Suave shampoo...give me a break. The building is older. Hence, the floors tend to slope. This might be a problem after a night on the town.
After putting our bags away, we decided to explore the neighborhood. It is now 11 o'clock on Wednesday night. There is no trepidation about walking down the street. Rush St. is 1 block away and filled with people, restaurants and energy. We could have stayed on this block for the 5 days we were in the city and never got tired of it. Great place. Quiet. The owners are friendly, but not overly so. They do have cats and they roam the whole building.
Two blocks away from the Drake at 1/3 the cost. Great opportunity to live the city life.

Now HERE'S the kind of B&B that can convert a hotel-type like me into an inn traveler!

Starting with the quintessential LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION, The Flemish House of Chicago is tucked into an old money Gold Coast location among lavish brownstones/greystones, perfectly walkable to Michigan Ave. shopping, nightlife, restaurants, even near north neighborhoods like Old Town and Lincoln Park. The quiet, tree-lined street puts you off the noise of nightlife, garbage trucks and police sirens. Smack out the front door is the newspaper box (1/2 block) and the Gold Coast Multiplex Gym (2 blocks), my husband's favorite "walk-in" workout (with a $20.00 day rate).

The inn is actually several apartments, and the privacy afforded by the minimal encounter with other guests is ideal. As opposed to hotels, there is no elevator noise, no maid vacuuming at 7AM, no late-night revelers in the halls, no smell of cigarettes from any bar area. We enjoyed a rear apartment with windows opening up onto a tiny green space, lushly landscaped and even graced by visiting birds.

The apartments are lovely. Ours was decorated in an arts and crafts motif. Every thoughtful amenity is provided, even a video of the Chicago architectual boat cruise for viewing. An extensive guest book details all the services of the inn (including a washing machine in the basement..nice touch) and a personal tour of the city complete with restaurant reviews and guides to walking tours. The look and feel of old-time elegance makes the antique-y bathroom an adventure rather than an inconvenience, as you are charmed by the high ceilings, lovely old plaster walls, unusual (not "canned") layout of the floor plan. The kitchen is stocked with appreciated breakfast amenities, simple, healthy. Everything is perfectly maintained and spotlessly clean. Though swept into a bygone era, I still had my wireless computer link so that the work of the present day could go on.

The hosts, Mike and Tom are relaxed, friendly, helpful.

The highlight of our stay was the warm attentions of the resident cat, Tim. Being cat lovers, we were very pleased to be greeted by him each time we returned to the inn. His big purr and (ahem) ample belly readily available to rub made us feel especially welcome.

We have discovered our new home away from home! 5 stars and 100% recommended!

My wife and I had an excellent stay here for three nights last weekend. The location is less than a block away from Rush St. and just a few blocks away from Oak Street Beach, Michigan Ave. shopping, Old Town, River North, Lincoln Park, and the Loop.

Even more important is no detail is missed to make your stay here an excellent one. The bed is very comfortable. The kitchen stocked with breakfast foods, plates, wine glasses, and cooking utensils There' also extra candles, extra towels blankets and pillows, starch for ironing in the walk-in closet.

There's even guide books, DVDS, and board games stored in the entertainment center.

Bravo Mike and Tom!

Flemish House is a converted graystone mansion on a beautiful residential street in Chicago's Gold Coast. We don't usually stay in bed-and-breakfasts but the reviews of Flemish House and its great location were alluring, and it turned out to be one of the most pleasant hotels we have ever stayed in. Every unit is an apartment (ours was a semi studio with bed alcove off a hall leading to the bathroom), with small but full kitchen. There are no common dining areas in the hotel, but breakfast is left in your fridge, and whatever you use is replenished every day. (Breakfast=muffins w/butter, jam, peanut butter, yogurts, dry cereals, bananas, milk, orange juice, coffee for coffee maker). Nice quality dishes, tableware, glasses, and there are enough cooking utensils and pots if you want to do more than bring in take-out (from, among many possibilities, the good supermarket, Treasure Island, only three blocks away). Being liberated from restaurants for a full week stay is economical and pleasant.

Furnishings are ecclectic old fashioned, nice rugs, good quality linens. Finding how attractive our unit was and that we had a dining table w/chairs, we invited friends over for dinner there. Individual hotel-style air conditioner for each unit gives you climate control. Bathroom is old fashioned in fixtures, but very clean and perfectly adequate.
Location is perfect-easy walk to fancy downtown shopping, or to lakefront a block away, or restaurants. But the street is very quiet at night. Resident owners, Tom and Mike, are pleasant and helpful, and keep a high standard of housekeeping and decor. Considering everything, we thought Flemish House a great bargain and definitely will go back again.

Although my mother (aged 56, me 30) stayed at the Flemish House in October 2005, I have noticed that there aren't that many photos so I thought I'd add my review so you can see more photos of the accomodation.

We loved the experience - the accomodation is lovely, extremely clean, all the added extras such as shampoo, toiletries you might have forgotten such as cotton buds, guides to Chicago are all provided to really make you feel at home.

Also the guys at Flemish House are friendly without being intrusive. You don't see them much so you feel like you're staying in your own apartment rather than a B&B as such.

The location is FANTASIC! Close enough to downtown to see all the fantastic architecture but still in an area where the real locals live. And how lucky they are to live in this part of Chicago!

This was my second trip to Chicago and I am pleased to say the second trip was just as fabulous as the first. Chicago is the best US city for architectural fans and the locals are just so friendly and helpful. I strongly recommend a trip out West to Oak Park to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's first house and a walk around the suburb.
